I know, I'm referring to him coming out of retirement, missing the first game, playing one game, then getting dropped
Club and country agreed he'd arrive later, rest is just an issue with between him and the manager.
Not even sure why people care so much about his international stuff.

Yet if he was playing brilliantly for his country you bet you'd be talking about how amazing he was and how everyone that's doubted him is wrong...

You assume incorrectly.
Half the stuff isn't even related to how he played btw.

If your car has problems and you pay 50 thousand to get a new car that actually has more problems, you'd wish to have your old car and the 50k in your account instead.

DDG would have cost approx £50m more over the course of his contract though, so you wouldn't have the extra 50k in your account in your car analogy. Just the old car. Onana wasn't a stupid move when we made it, though yes he's had a bad start.

exactly. People need to stop pining for DDG back, who also had his issues towards the end with us. If anything, Kovar would be the shout (but to be fair that wouldve been one hell of a call to go with a young gk like that into the season)

The guy isn't having the best season is he. AFCON sounds like a complete disaster. Just hope his head is right if he is going straight back into the side against Wolves.

It still boggles my mind the idea people think Onana is an issue. Our defence has been makeshift all season. We're not scoring any goals. Yet it's our keeper who's let in a few easy shots? Not for me man.

He has shown horrendous technique on saves he does make, gets no good lift on either direction, has been glued to his line worse than ddg, and takes ages to pass the ball around with relatively simple passes. Im not saying we dump onana right now but to act like he hasnt been a problem this season is pretty ridiculous. You could easily make the case he pretty much singlehandedly cost us our UCL campaign this season. Im all for seeing how Onana finishes this year up but he has hardly looked worth it so far this season.

What contract? Can you explain the math?.

You want someone to explain the concept of needing to get DDG to sign a new contract to hold onto him? Seriously?!
I think they wanna know how he came up with 50million£.

The number is wrong but he is right: DeGea would have cost more in wages.

When a new car is a bad starter, at least you can take it back to the dealer to get it fixed

50m is a figure he got out if his arse. DDG was never getting the same wages as previously. Even if he got 100k per week more than Onana which is highly unlikely, it’s 5m more per year, while Onana cost 50m just in transfer fees.

It's napkin maths but his last contract was apparently close to £400k per week, whilst Onana's is apparently around £100k per week, which is a £300k difference, and £300k per week equals £15.6m per year, which is close to £50m over a 3 year contract, and the 3 year contract I made up to suit my agenda.

How do you know? I can claim that Onana has higher wages than what De Gea would have in his new contract, but actually we don't know.

What we do know is that we paid to get Onana, while De Gea was already here and free. And Onana this year is worse than what De Gea was last year. This was not a good transfer, especially since our main problem last year was that we did not score enough. We had to solve the scoring problem first, before trying to improve on the goalkeeper, and we should pay that much only for a goalkeeper that really improves us.

The new contract was significantly less than the old contract.

By the way, the players' wages are not public, their contracts are private.

This was true in the past, and is still true as far as I know... if I am mistaken, please correct me.

What is indisputable is that we have a keeper now who is worse than the keeper we had last year. However, whether our new keeper this year will actually be better than the keeper we had last year remains to be seen.

Onana has been an issue. Certainly not as big an issue as some are making out, but he's definitely not blameless either. Hell, in the CL he was the one most at fault and is the main reason we got knocked out.

He's been a huge issue in the CL. There's no reason to think we'd be any better off in the PL if we'd stuck with De Gea.

And even if we think about the CL alone, we know that DDG made some horrific howlers in Europe last season.

Of course, there is an alternate universe where we replace DDG with a much better keeper than both him and Onana. That's the one I'd rather be living in. But I don't know who that keeper is, or if he was available last summer.

That's pretty much where I am as well.

I do tend to think De Gea was a bit better last season than Onana has been this season, but it's hardly a huge gulf. De Gea's 19/20 and 20/21 were probably a similar level (as Onana) or perhaps even slightly worse, and his last couple of months in 18/19 were definitely worse. On the flip side his 21/22 was comfortably better, mostly due to the first half of that season where he looked almost back to his best before falling away again.

Onana has been disappointing so far and I haven't criticised him too much yet since I always try to give players time. I still have a decent amount of hope that he comes good, although the longer things do go on the less confident I am of that happening.

I think you all have to remember that how the team overall performs influences confidence and individual performances.

Onana has been let down by his defense and he let them down as well. It goes both ways.

It isn't indisputable at all. De Gea was chucking the ball into his net plenty of times last season. He was also shoddy in possession.
Yes, of course. I now have it on good authority that De Gea had a side deal with City to chuck the ball into his net.

But your point, that De Gea was gash, doesn’t even attempt to refute the point that Onana has been even worse. Why might that be? Because it simply is the case that Onana this year has been worse than De Gea last year. As for the future, we shall see. But based solely on the observed fact of this season versus last season, keeper performance is significantly worse.

But maybe, just maybe, the debacle that Onana has been this season and now with the national team insanity behind him, Onana will pull himself together and prove to his skeptics that he really is the brilliant keeper De Gea haters prayed he would be but most definitely has demonstrated, so far, has not been either for his club or national team.

More like back of a fag packet!

Onana is on a 5 year deal at £110k a week, so 5.72m x 5 years = £28.6m wages plus £43.5m fee (he's not likely to achieve any addons, let's be honest) = £72.1m

We'll go with de Gea on a 5 year deal, although that was highly unlikely, but just for fun.

It was rumoured that he was happy to sign for double Onana's wages so £220k a week, so £11.44m x 5 = £57.2m.

So Onana will cost and extra £14.9m rather than the £50m LESS that you posted!

And there's no way we are selling him in five years for £64.9million to make up your posted deficit of £50m.

It was far more likely that the new de Gea deal was a 2 or max 3 year deal anyway, whilst we took our time a found a proper keeper, instead of the, so far, clown, we now find ourselves chained to.

It's one thing to be beaten near post, but another to be beaten near post while getting nowhere near close or even trying to save it
