His wife being robbed is horrible and may indeed contribute to him currently being in a bad headspace.

But from a strictly football POV, we haven't seen anything from Onana that we haven't seen in previous weeks he's been here, so I doubt it impacted his performance.
Yeah sadly these mistakes he's been making are nothing new. If anything, its more surprising when he has a good match without any mistakes.

Well, he’ll be back on the team sheet against Lyon. I hope Bayindir has a blinder and stakes his claim against Newcastle.

He isn't a good goalkeeper because his technique is off and he isn't athletic and fast enough.

He needs to be sold this summer. Absolutely has to be moved on.

Why did we sell Henderson if they knew they'd be letting De Gea go the next year? I dont understand the decision making at this club.

Diogo Costa should be number 1 target to replace
He is far from error free...but would be an upgrade.

They should be blooding some of these promising academy keepers, see if the future could well bode well with Radek Vítek (currently out on loan in Austria), Elyh Harrison, Hubert Graczyk or Dermot Mee betwix the stix.

How to do ‘ease a keeper in’? Amorim is dealing with this fine.

I think that’s the media narrative to reduce pressure on everyone. If Bayindir plays well he has to play against Lyon.
Maybe just play him after the injury? Before Onana made more mistakes we all saw coming.

He’s waiting for one of the hardest remaining games where on the balance of probabilities he concedes more than once today.

There was no logical reason to wait until today imo, Onana should’ve been dropped long ago. The moment Bayindir was fit the decision should’ve been made.

Doesn’t Onana put Vaseline on his gloves before a game? Surely this is part of the problem for not having decent handling. Why are the coaches allowing this

Comparing how much outfield players and goalkeepers run in a match is silly and pointless.

That's not my point. My point is as an outfield player, when you feel like you've done your job (and the players did, against Lyon imo), if you see your goalkeeper making silly mistakes (after mouthing off pre-match), you're bound to be annoyed.

Loved the guy, really wanted him to succeed here — especially as a fellow African. But man, he’s let me down too many times. Half the time, it feels like his head’s just not in the game. He looks genuinely surprised when something happens around him, like he’s lagging a few seconds behind the moment — and by then, it’s too late. We concede.

At this point, I think it’s unfair to him and the team to keep throwing him out there. Let him take that early holiday or sit on the bench till the season’s done. No shame in stepping back when it’s not working.

Henderson wasn't going to wait any longer as he wanted (quite rightfully) to be first choice so he could play games. We either played him or let him go. He was also barely any better than De Gea with the ball at his feet, so that's not what we wanted.

We also didn't 'know' we were going to let De Gea go at that stage. Hell, we offered him a new contract midway through 22/23 which he refused to make a decision on until right near the end of the season, by which time we'd changed our mind and took it off the table. So it was only near the end of De Gea's last season that we knew.

There were also rumours that Henderson was one of the ones feeding leaks to the media, although I will stress that 'rumours' doesn't mean it was actually happening.

A lot of keepers do this. What an ignorant post.
A lot of keepers don’t palm the ball straight into the opposition attackers. Or a lot of keepers can handle a ball. A lot of keepers can also play with their feet.

They didn't know they'd be letting De Gea go the next year.

In fact they didn't know they'd be letting De Gea go even months before they let De Gea go, because they initially offered De Gea a new contract. There was a lack of planning and clarity about what they wanted to do.

He's only been back for three games. Those three games being Forest, City and Lyon. This Newcastle game is arguably the easiest and least consequential of them.

What a stupid reply. Next up: Onana wearing gloves must be the problem.

Henderson is bang average, anyway.

Onana is by no means the answer, but de Gea, who went an entire season without a club, and Henderson neither were.

Disagree. This is probably the hardest of them 3. Forest aren’t that great just having a great season and they didn’t trouble us at all. City are very poor this season and again rarely troubled us. Lyon wouldn’t have came out of the game with a draw if we had a different keeper in goal as them 2 goals they scored was avoidable. Newcastle are different beast when at home in front of there crowd.

Yeah, I don't understand people pining for past players as much as they do on the caf.

We've got a City/Claudio Bravo situation unfortunately, and it's shit, but bringing back Joe Hart clearly wasn't the answer for them and bringing back any of our old keepers isn't the answer for us.

Yeah. Not vaseline on his gloves, which was what your post further up was saying.
I’m just questioning whether that is meant to help the grip of goalkeepers or not? Because it certainly doesn’t help ours. Everything bounces out of his hands

I think it just adds a little bit of adhesiveness to the gloves and repels water in damp conditions. Plenty of keepers up to and including Neuer have been seen using it:

Onana's issues are down to basic technique and decision making, but just because he's been poor doesn't mean that every little thing he does must automatically be wrong. It's like saying our attackers must be tying their laces the wrong way because they're not scoring.

Yeah it's frustrating for sure, but the point him not running as much was weird.

It's supposed to help with grip in wet weather and maybe stop gloves from becoming too saturated. Someone mentioned it to me a while back and I laughed at the idea, just bring a fecking towel or wear gloves designed to work better in the wet.

Agreed

It sounds good but there is doubt about absolutely fecking everything in life so it doesn’t really go down as a “words to live by”

Haha ofcourse, if you take it literally.. Intelligent people always doubt their decisions, its a sign that you question and think about stuff..

But in this context he meant it more as that he felt in his gut by judgement of character and behavior that Leighton wasnt going to do it for him.. So I interpreted it as "when you have a doubt or feeling in your guy, trust it"..

And yet both Forest and City are above Newcastle in the table, and the Lyon match was the most important with the most pressure. He'd also only just returned to training prior to the first two.

There was no 'right' match to ease him back in after his injury.

Exactly. Has his wife or someone been robbed every other game? The answer is no. He's just not very good.
And until Bayindir has been given the same kind of playing time and leeway nobody should judge him.
Some of you lot are ridiculous.

"New signing"? Bayindir has been at the club for almost two whole seasons. If he's not "settled" by now, he never will be. What's telling is that neither Ten Hag nor Amorim have trusted him enough to give him even a single league appearance before now, despite Onana's erratic form. And in many ways that's fine. He was signed as a cheap backup keeper. A body to sit on the bench because the only other option was 83 year old Tom Heaton. There's no reason to have unrealistic expectations of him based on half a decent game against Arsenal.
Yeah but Ethl also didn't play Amad either did he so that means nothing.
Give him as many chances and playing time as Onana then we can judge him.

I'm not saying we don't need a new number 1 but at least give Bayindir time to see if he's good enough for 1st or 2nd or out the door.

I think the judgements on Bayindir are a little harsh. He was really poor against Spurs but playing about 3 games in 2 years is very difficult for any player, let alone a keeper where it's hyper important to be sharp.

I often think the reason Romero was our best ever backup keeper was because he played pretty consistently.

At this point it would take a disaster for me to not want to see him finish the season as number 1. Hopefully he grabs the opportunity and saves us a job in the summer, who knows.

The reason you need to put vaseline or similar conditioners on gloves, especially new gloves, is that it soften them which makes them grippier. If you don't have vaseline you can spit on them but it doesn't last.

Vaseline is very common on gloves for keepers. Helps the ball stick. Small adjustment of the wrists for the lyon 2nd goal and ball should have stuck. He never has soft hands when we need it. Soft to no hands for the first goal and hands of steel for the second goal. He's too much of a roller coaster. Move him on,can't build a solid Base with someone so unreliable behind them.

How about De Gea who is doing great at Fiorentina for a season and a half? Was he the answer?

His performances had dipped massively, he was on obscene money and it was logical to want a keeper who was better with their feet.

As we often have, we chose horribly. On reflection keeping De Gea would have been a better choice than signing Onana obviously.

That isn't the ideal though. The ideal would have been signing a better keeper.
