It’s disappointing that McTominay is starting and that there are no Amad/Mejbri/Iqbal on the bench

Was he the player that turned up late during the tour and that's the reason he didn't play any of it? If so then I like how he dealt with it because it must have been positive enough for Ten Hag not to shut him out. Shows maturity.
Yes, he didn’t get any minutes on tour due to being late.

He did play at Old Trafford versus Rayo last week and he looked bright and ETH said he was impressed. Good to see him back in contention.

The fact that Martial is out and he still benched Ronaldo... really happy with that. Would've been so easy to just start him. But he's holding firm. Very nice.

Didn’t see any minute of preseason. I am very excited to see the team play under Ten Hag !

I'm as happy as I can possibly be with that lineup considering injuries and lack of investment.

Very excited to see Martinez and Eriksen. They raise the technical quality of our first 11.

No Bailly (expected) but also no Lindelof. Injured, or ten Hag just opting for one CB on bench?

Amad too, but I think a loan is very expected
Surprising on Lindelof. Must be injured. Amad no surprise at all.

Can see Eriksen and Ronaldo swap 2nd half. McFred had better up their game loads otherwise Brighton will run through the midfield again.

The buzz should be there, ignore who the players are, the manager is the single most important part of a football club. One manager can win the title with a squad that another manager would finished 7th with. Not saying we will win the title, but never underestimate how important a manager is, and how big of a gap there is between Ole, Ralf and then Ten Hag now. It's more important than any signings we could have made.
I agree. True our players are not the best, but also not as bad as people make it seem, it’s crazy how much coaching is underrated nowadays, especially since our transfer business haven’t been great. With that being said, I do worry about the squad depth, but that’s another topic.

If we’re struggling, do you think it’s realistic that garnacho comes on for Mctom/Fred? Eriksen moves back into CDM and Bruno moves into the middle behind rashford giving Garnacho that left side?

Seems more attractive than just lumping grumpy ronaldo on and watching him walk around throwing his arms up in despair.

Maguire starting, Varane on the bench. No excuses for bad transfer business, board failures or whatever else. If he’s stupid enough to play Maguire, the inevitably shit result is purely on ETH.
Varane is probably not fit enough to start. ETH talked about him yesterday.

Had that as my prediction apart from Shaw but changed it to Ronaldo up front :(

I don't think Lindelof is injured.

I think it's 1 GK, 1 CB, 2 FBs, 2 CMs, and 3 FWs, total 9 subs which is the maximum subs on the bench allowed, and 20 players selected for Matchday.

Martinez starts! Man, I can't wait to find out how someone only 5'9" will handle the dizzying height of 5'10" Vardy, having last season only managed to play in the country with the tallest average male height in the world.

We can't field a much stronger line up with what we have available considering Ronaldo isn't fully fit.

A billion spent and this is our squad. First game of the season and the most exciting thing is Garnacho on the bench.
You must surely be a little bit excited about Martinez and Eriksen? Bored before they've even kicked a competitive football for us.....

Yeah this gives me hope that it's an indicator that he's got a good head on his shoulders. We've seen in the past how players can react to discipline, especially at a young age, and it seems like he took it in a positive way.

He's a talent, hope he keeps improving and doesn't do a Januzaj.

Going to be interesting to see Bruno, Eriksen, Rashford, and Sancho in the same starting 11. Will be interesting to see if this experiment works.

I do feel for ETH. I am sure he would have wanted more of his players or better quality in todays line up but he underestimated how useless our club is in terms of recruitment!!

He ain’t a miracle manager, even pep or Klopp can’t do wonders with this squad!!

Rashford as 9, Mcfred in Midfield and HM in defence tells you all about how far behind we are!!

Ten Hag's first real stamp on the squad. Didn't cave to pressure of Ronaldo.

Welbeck is 6'1". Big test for him.

We lost to these 4-0 last time with Varane starting instead of Maguire.

I have spent the last week arguing with people about because I don't really rate Ronaldo anymore. Still if we are struggling for a goal and don't bring the greatest goalscorer to ever live on then we would be a bit silly.

Not sure why Donny makes the bench and Iqbal doesn't? Hierarchy is nonsensical when we could see in pre season that Iqbal is clearly better.

I kind of like the team, really interested to see the ball progression down the left with Lisandro and Shaw, could be real strong element of the team. How Bruno and Eriksen work together will be key, Bruno with the more erratic creativity and Eriksen with the subtle excellence. Having those 2 together in the team along with Lisandro from the back will take a lot of pressure off the midfield pair to be progressive with the ball and they can concentrate on high energy, pressing and support.

If Sancho continues his pre season form and Rashford gets back to where he was 2 years ago there is a lot to like in that line up.

Of course FDJ and peak Varane would make Utd stronger but there is still time.

Really interested to see the Welbz/Lisandro duel, Welbeck is strong, still pretty quick and decent in the air, plus good technique, should be a test for Martinez, but one he should be winning.
