Lets be real. If we want to get out of the groups and have a run in the champions league we are going to have to beat good teams. So dont see why everyone is making such a fuss about it. All teams are tough in the Champions League
Don't think you understand me. We might have to face those teams just to qualify for the group stages.

Think I might have confus d a few people. Someone please confirm. Hasn't seeding of countries been removed from the qualification process. So teams from England, Spain, Italy and Germany could face each other in the qualifiers. I am positive I herd that somewhere.

The new rule is only for the group stage. I see nothing on the BBC article or in this thread about changes for the playoff league route.
I guess for the rule to apply for group stages, qualifying teams are affected as well. I may be wrong though.

Doubt Carrick will start... If we are lucky he will be an unused sub on the bench and play 60 mins in an under 21 game early next week. You all know how this works

Seeding has been removed from the qualifiers so we could face teams like Atletico/Valencia or Roma to qualify for the group stages. I don't know about you, but I don't want us having to beat teams like that to qualify to the group stages.
THIS I was not aware of, that we could end up facing the likes of Atletico or Roma and not some unpronounceable club in the wastelands of east of the Danube.

Best to nail down third place!

    Red Card for Casemiro!
Carrick back, Blind to LB please. Blind is still a much better LB then Shaw imo, his attacking skills are just way better, one match doesnt change that.
Blind doesn't have the pace or physique that Shaw does, we might need both to stretch their defence when they sit deep. I think Blind will start in midfield, and Carrick might eased into the game later on, if at all. Either way, Shaw at LB, please.

I think LvG will change formation. I expect a 4-4-2 with di Maria and Falcao both being given a chance to salvage their seasons.
How about RvP getting a chance to salvage his? He's had some game time under his belt, must feel good after the U21 goals, and can actually hold up the ball. RvP over Falcao if Rooney is out.

Di Maria over Young, agreed. Young's brilliant form has jaded a bit, and unfortunately for him, though he has earned the right to demand patience on the back of some of his performances, the British record signing breathing down his back might get a nod because of sheer reputation.

With top four firmly in the bag and Liverpool having gone tits up, it's not a must win game but it would be nice to end this losing shit.
It would be safer knowing that we had confirmed CL spots, instead of a scenario in which we qualify for the group stages only if we beat Valencia or Roma. 3rd is the target, we must win the remaining games, and hope City or Arsenal slip up somewhere else.

I see nothing on the UEFA site or on the Google search about changes for the playoff league route.

At the moment we couldn't face Valencia, Leverkusen, Shakhtar Donetsk and the Europa League winner (FC Sevilla or Napoli. If Dnipro or Fiorentina are winning the EL then Roma would be a seeded club too).
But our oponnents could be either Roma, Sporting Lisbon, Monaco, FC Krasnodar, Ajax, Gent, Galatasaray, Panathinaikos, Young Boys or Rapid Vienna.

Who would be captain if Rooney, Van Persie and Carrick doesn't play?

@Gandalf Greyhame fair enough, but Shaw hasnt got half Blind's footballing brain and is just a far lesser player in possession. If he played like vs Chelsea every week, he'd be the best LB in the league by a distance, but often, going forwards, Blind just links up better. And with this 4141 formation, Carrick is just a far better option as he needs less help, it's the first time that Blind really got caught out, as Fellaini and Herrera didnt really play in midfiels.

Never understood this line of thought, like its just whoever is the better team always wins.

I think we would have far more chance of winning the UCL if our last 16 run went Zenit, Benfica, Twente, Madrid

Than Barcelona, Bayern, Chelsea, Madrid. Right?

If Zenit, Benfica etc have got the later stages of the tournament, they were the better team. Whoever you play it will be hard.

Yes but it'll certainly be easier playing Zenit and Benfica to Barca and Bayern, no?

13.03 The UEFA administration seeds clubs for the qualifying phase, the play-offs and the group stage, in accordance with the club coefficient rankings established at the beginning of the season (see Annex D) and with the principles set by the Club Competitions Committee. If, for any unforeseen reason, any of the participants in such rounds are not known at the time of the draw, the coefficient of the club with the higher coefficient of the two clubs involved in an undecided tie will be used for the purposes of the draw.

13.04 For the qualifying phase and play-offs, a draw between the same number of seeded and unseeded clubs determines the pairings, in accordance with the club coefficient rankings (see Annex D). The UEFA administration may form groups for the draw, in accordance with the principles set by the Club Competitions Committee. Clubs from the same association cannot be drawn against each other.

If Zenit and Benfica make it out of their tough groups and we make it out of our groups both matches will be equally as tough. Either way, lets go with your theory....

We make it to the semis and zenit are left and barcelona. Sure zenit are easier then barca on paper but if they have made it to the semis they are also a good team. Who cares who you play? You have to beat em all to win it.

No you don't, you have to beat what's in front of you, the bookies would shorten your odds if you've got an easier run to the final because you've got more chance of winning it. Teams have off days and rough patches, are Leicester equally as good as us because they beat us earlier in the season? Of course not.

Well that's one way of looking at it but I disagree. Yeah they might have been the better team against certain opponants, but that doesn't mean they would be hard for us. We always struggled against Barcas possession game (especially with our legs going), but Chelsea I think tended to do better then them I think. They certainly did better against that little miracle midget that keeps scoring against us.

We need some changes in the team for this match. Fellaini and Mata were poor the last two games and they don’t deserve to be here on the current form, but maybe for the balance of the team Fellaini will have to play. Blind wasn’t good enough neither at Everton like Shaw, and with Rojo coming back from illness there might be questions for the left back position. Valencia was poor, but due to the lack of competition here, he’ll have to play again. I don’t know, but if we’re tough with Mata, Fellaini and the other, why can’t we with Ashley Young…. He was also average the last two games, maybe better than Mata, but with what he produced lately, I can’t see why he’s an automatic starter

It will be a pleasure to see Fletch back at home too, but we absolutely need to beat them, and hopefully in a good manner.

Is there no option at right back beside Valencia? Antonio has been looking a bit grim of late.
