Regarding VDB and playing deeper. He’s been playing almost on the shoulder of the centre backs. He’s right up top today and it was the same against Southampton. Is that tactical?

VDB needs to sharpen up and be a little more intelligent with his movement. Looks like he's hiding out there and happy to keep it very very safe when he does see the ball.

When opportunities are scarce for him he needs to try harder. He's coasting through this game.
He's not hiding, he's being ignored.

It looks like hiding because he likes to make runs. But if no pass is given it looks like he's hiding. This is the same way he played at Ajax, but the pass usually was given.

If you notice Bruno or KDB they never get themselves in the crowd. They always stay away from the crowd to create chances for attackers.

VdB like Bruno follows the ball, which is fine, but he theb gets lost in the crowd. I thought he is a master of off the ball movements that he makes himself available all the time...scratching my head.
    He’s hiding...

It has to be, and I really really don't get it. Especially when we don't have a Bruno or Pogba on the pitch.

What's happening with VDB. He has been given an opportunity to take the lead at 10 instead he is hiding behind the players. Just don't take that responsibility at all. Not sure if he its the tactic though but he is playing far up.
There are a few things. One, there's not a great deal of space in the game so it's a difficult one to influence. Secondly, Fred is having way too much of the ball. Watch Donny off the ball and notice the good runs he makes, but Fred is simply incapable of finding him. Fred is so limited as a footballer it's quite odd that he's playing in such an influential role. It makes no sense.

That's not to absolve Donny of all blame here. He should be doing more, there's no doubt about that. But there are a few extenuating circumstances in this particular game.

Have to disagree. A couple of passes were not given when he made good runs but by far he's either unavailable or, when he's available unable to make a quick forward pass and prefers to rotate the ball instead. Too safe.

They’re showing Chelsea and eulogising them now on MOTD as if they’re some kind of FA cup legends. Then there’s also the current City wankfest. Plastics to the left of me, Plastics to the right-let’s have an actual football club win this competition this year?

VDB reminds me of when you play 5 a side a new guy comes along and looks really flash in the warm up. Keepy uppies, step overs and rocket shots etc. You pick him on your team and after 15 minutes you think this guy has never played before. I was giving bemefit if doubt, guve him time. But I have given up on him (I hope that works)

I disagree. He's falling to deep and not finding the space for the pass

So why is he trying to play as a shadow striker hiding inbetween the lines so far?
Tactics i guess? Not sure why though. Never played like that at Ajax. Made runs into the box, but not as a shadow striker

to be fair, it would be a struggle to find 30 seconds of highlights from the first half.

Watched the last 10 minutes and it seems once again VDB is playing like a 9 instead of a 10. Just get him out of here already.

    Don't taze me, bro
All this "drop Fred" is just completely off the mark for me. Our front 4 have barely strung any play together despite touches.

Fred is finding space and progressing the play exactly as he should be, but it's VdB's job to drop, pick it up, and distribute from there. He's literally playing Bruno's role, he's just failing.

Surprised we haven’t made any subs at HT instantly. Well I’m not, really. But they need to happen soon enough.

United are not exactly famous for being a quick 1-2 passing side. Players like Matic and Fred just don't have it in their DNA to send quick balls to Donny. Hopefully someone can.

Or we can just rely on finding individual moments of brilliance.

Isn’t that his game? I thought people compared him to Thomas Muller.

Same here. They are defending deep, so it is going to be hard without Bruno and a right side. We have been more inventive than previous games.
Yeah, think even Bruno would struggle with how organized + deep West Ham seem to be. Game should open up in the second half though
Yes fine enough for penalties or a sucker punch when west ham decide to go for it in the last quarter probably. We could play all week and not score like this.
They're playing deep and defending organized. For a first half its not bad.

VdB suffering from a different playing style imo. He is schooled in Ajax where it's a lot more pass and move in final 3rd. Which is how he always plays. Can't do that really with Fred etc. He will always do better with Bruno, Mata etc. I actually think he will link up well with Amad if they get a chance together.
