It’s not hiding there’s just no space. We don’t need him deeper as the midfield are controlling the game!

He is doing the right thing it’s just a tough match with 8 men behind the ball.
Watch how Bruno plays. Always in the channels, always open for the pass. Van de Beek is playing like a striker today, needs to move deeper to influence the game or he'll just be chasing shadows.

Control what? He's been cack. Might as well not be playing.
Errr how about our 69% possession?

I really don’t understand what more you could expect from our deep holding midfielder who’s job it is to control the midfield and allow the rest to go forward. He’s literally not misplaced the ball once and ticked over our possession

What's happening with VDB. He has been given an opportunity to take the lead at 10 instead he is hiding behind the players. Just don't take that responsibility at all. Not sure if he its the tactic though but he is playing far up.
He seems to run away from ball instead of take charge. I kinda get it cos he’s trying to make his own space and a couple of times the ball (Fred) hasn’t been played. Still want to see him come and demand the ball a bit more.

still hoping to see Amad at some point but can’t see it. Suspect James might get on ahead of him with Amad to potential get a couple of minutes

Fred is having way too much of the ball for a start. No idea why he's playing in a role where the play is going through him. He a very limited player, and this position is certainly not playing to his strengths.
Agree 100% with this. He's making far too many pointless passes which are not getting us anywhere.

Playing with 9 behind the ball, 2 low blocks, its difficult, we need a goal . There coming out different in 2nd . Quicken up the passing in final 3rd we should be in.

Spot on, people somehow expect Bruno performance from him, but that shouldn't even be his position, not his fault Ole keeps playing him there.

Don’t know if it’s just the difference in styles between Bruno and Donny, but Donny is often right up alongside martial, against the centre backs, rather than getting in between the lines and demanding the ball. On this performance though, I’m struggling to really understand what Donny offers over someone like Mata.

For the first 40 minutes (until their corner) we dominated the match and they could hardly get out of their half. But the imbalance of the team and subsequent impotence of the attack saw us fail to capitalise.

Bit of a shame to see how things are panning out for Donny, a metronome type of player but we don't play close to a one-touch style, with quick movement. He's lost in there. And to compound it, no Pogba or Bruno who can actually spot a run and play that one touch football.

Wouldn't mind seeing Bruno and Cavani on early to put this to bed and avoid extra time.

Also, how was Noble not booked for that foul on Donny when he was taking a throw-in?

    Thought we've played fine.
Yes fine enough for penalties or a sucker punch when west ham decide to go for it in the last quarter probably. We could play all week and not score like this.

Martial offering no threat as a centre forward at all...

VDB trying hard but looks.a bit low on confidence

Where are people getting this idea he can play deeper? His best asset is goalscoring. He isn't a very creative player further up the pitch. What do you think he is going to be like further back?
Because he played deeper for his whole career until he got to United?

We've been decent, like certainly the better team however I can't help but feel we just let that half pass us by a bit. Looks like we're missing a bit of cutting edge. I don't want to see them let this slip to extra time.

Christ, West ham are not even trying. 8-9 players in the box when defending? We have just shown how vulnerable we can be in defense and they come here and just defend.

    What did he say?
Lack of space to play in front because they have so many players crammed around their box, he ended up just plying on the defensive line.
Add in we're super direct and our player don't usually look for that pass, it's normally straight into a striker or pushed wide for a cross when Cavani plays.

Also didn't realise that Greenwood skill was also a nutmeg on Noble, unreal

Because he has played deeper on lots of occasions and we have a significantly better player to come on and play at #10.

Furthermore, I’ll be mightily impressed if he can pass the ball as horribly as Fred has so far tonight.

Dull really and West Ham's lack of ambition isn't helping. Guessing Bruno will come on in 20-25 mins if it stays as it is, we're just not the same without him or Cavani.

This is not the same VDB that was very good during Ajax's epic CL run. He's capable of great games versus big teams. He didn't look shy versus Madrid and co.

It does make you wonder if we actually decided to watch VDB before we signed him. Either we somehow thought he was similar in style to Bruno or we're just unwilling to tailor tactics to actually fit his style.

Either way doesn't seem like it'll work for him here.

I'm surprised just how little West Ham have attacked in a cup game, it's like they're playing for a 0-0. Still wouldn't rule them out because they could get a lucky go from a set piece.

VDB showed some promise early in the season (in his 15min cameos) but since then OGS benched him and it shows. He's playing without confidence and probably plots how to get out of the club asap.

VDB needs to sharpen up and be a little more intelligent with his movement. Looks like he's hiding out there and happy to keep it very very safe when he does see the ball.

When opportunities are scarce for him he needs to try harder. He's coasting through this game.

Rashford, Martial, Greenwood got us 60ish goals last season. Surely they should be more penetrative now? Not seeing it

If you notice Bruno or KDB they never get themselves in the crowd. They always stay away from the crowd to create chances for attackers.

VdB like Bruno follows the ball, which is fine, but he theb gets lost in the crowd. I thought he is a master of off the ball movements that he makes himself available all the time...scratching my head.

Fred's passing is so frustrating at times, he either overhits or underhits passes but seems incapable of getting it right most times.

Matic and Maguire take about 10 mins to pass a ball 5 yards. Why cant we move the ball quicker. Move ball quicker we will create chances better. This holding on to ball and then eventually pass ball 5 yards to the side.

That Odejayi header would have been blown up as a foul on the keeper these days.

We’ll continue to struggle if Fred remains the only player trying anything risky. Need someone to step up or come on to ignite a spark.

Good to see us pin a team back and dominate for nearly a full half, though.
