Last 10 mins or so we seemed to wake up.
We’re clearly trying to invert more and having teething problems coming out from the back. Shaw / Martinez and Varane have all had a go at inverting.
Garnacho looks a little bit off the pace. Sancho the obvious change

    Rubbish performance
Mount works hard. Can't fault his effort.
Only 2 mins added time was a joke.
Garnacho poor as he always seems to be when he starts. He isnt ready to start games.

We look muddled tactically. If you play Bruno and Mount you need to push the team up and compress the game in the opposition half. Instead we started out sitting really deep but keeping Bruno and Mount high meaning there was very few options for progression through midfield. We even dropped back while in possession, which just made it harder for us to play. It also left us with loads of gaps for the opposition to run through.

We did push up a lot in the last 10 minutes and looked better for it. Suddenly players are nearer each other and able to find passes. Didn't play well, but better. Need to up the intensity and play higher up the pitch second half, or drop Mount deep alongside Casemiro and get him to carry the ball more.

When we signed Mount I mentioned my concern that we would ultimately pigeonhole him in an unnatural position (deeper in midfield or out on the wing) in order to accommodate him and Bruno in the same team. Unfortunately it very much feels like that's what's going to happen.
Yeah I think we all had the same concerns to be honest. Don't get it and it doesn't work. Something significant is going to have to click or I bet Ten Hag moves Bruno out the right again...

Garnacho off, Sancho F9/Martial ST on.

Need Rashford back on the LW because he's completely out of the game.

Shades of the opening day of the season at home to Palace in 2020 and Brighton last season. Then had the excuse of a lack of pre-season and preparation no excuse can be used tonight for that 1st half. Two defenders on yellow cards a concern, hopefully a big improvement 2nd half and I'll be more than happy with a 1-0 United win.

So many concerning signs this half

    • Wolves just running past our midfield like they're not there
    • Somedo has Garnacho well and truly pocketed
    • Very little final third creation and Rashford hardly in the game
    • Bruno struggling to play the simplest of passes
We need more control and need Rashford on the ball more. Move him out to the left and get Sancho on as a false 9

Garnacho isn't good enough to start yet, especially if it means moving Rashford out of position.

    Immediate feelings watching that,

Having a goalkeeper that can pass is pointless when there isn’t anyone to pass to. Same issue as last season. Statues.

We are going to concede a few goals as midfield is just weak. Looks like a real area of concern.

We make a lot of work of playing football don't we. Lots of huffing and puffing.

Frustrating half but I think we'll nick this.

Garnacho has been terrible. Needs to come off before he costs us a goal. Rashford needs to move to the left and Sancho can play in the middle.

Mount and Bruno isn't really working. Neither are having an impact on the game, and everything is coming from Cas. This isn't on Mount specifically but something is off.

Still, I think we could've done better if it weren't for Garnacho having an off day. Not worries he's probably a bit rusty, but he needs to come off.

Rashford loses it and just shrugs his shoulders and walks. What the hell is this?
That's Rashford in a nutshell half the time. When you look at other teams and how their lead strikers press and then you see Rashford casually jogging behind a CB with the ball just to show that he is "pressing", you understand why he can never be lead striker if we ever intend to be a team who press from the front.

This match has so far been perhaps the worst from Ole's time when we could string 2 passes together. What are we doing in training. No cohesion in either pressing or passing.

I thought ETH liked quick attacking football all we do is pass it around the back

Awful performance. No movement, no cohesion, no intensity, no quality. The amount of times we played the ball backwards or made the wrong choices is truly unsettling. No idea what they spent preseason doing.

It can only get better from here.

I just watched 45 mins of crap. Disjointed performance, it seems these guts are not motivated at all. Antony continues his bad decision, Garnacho looks like U-21 playing in XI. Bruno and Mount invisible in midfield. What a way to start first match at Old Trafford. Lucky not to be behind.

Sloppy in possession, standing around off the ball lack of incisive passing. All seems familiar, hopefully better to come in the second half.

Garnacho's performance is curious. The thing you can bet on, even with poor displays is he can run with the ball at pace. Tonight, even when he's been given space ahead of him, he looks awkward with the ball. Antony looking the faster attacking player

Well that was a bit crap.

AWB has probably been our best player. Antony has looked the best in an attacking sense. Garnacho wasn’t good but then last season he struggled to make an impact when starting. Still preferred him as a starter to Sancho but it’s tough with Rashford needing to play up top because of injuries. Cas has been decent and the only one finding any decent passes from the midfield. Mount and Bruno haven’t been getting up to much.
