I think we can test a 3-4-1-2 here.

Romero (good goalkeeper and deserve to get another game this season. Confident he can do well)
Darmian (should be fresh and need another start and can play wingback)
Lindelöf (time for him to step up a bit. Hope he can bounce back after today)
Tuanzebe (deserve to get a game in defense)
Blind ( Has done well and good to give him another game)
Lingard (Would test him as a wingback. Think he can do well in that role and we have few options )
Herrera (few options so hopefully he can step up)
Mctominay (did well in pre season and deserves to get a game)
Mkhitaryan (time to step up and find some form again)
Rashford (our best player at the moment. Time for him to be the main man)
Martial (poor game today and should get a chance here to step up again)

Matic, Smalling, Young, Valencia can all be rested. Lukaku and Mata on the bench.

Was thinking about giving Shaw a game, but not sure I want to start him. In either formation I think Blind should play ahead of him and I rather have Lingard as wingback.

Players have a point to prove no matter what the competition is or who will be involved, players must show character before a big game against Spurs. Hopefully Jose lift them up and reboot.
Matic, Lukaku, Valencia can not play this by any mean. Play Lingard and Mkhitaryan they both must show some awareness and Martial too I don't know but I think we will win this and enter Spurs game on high well at least I'm trying to be positive.

Will be interesting what team we will play considering it's Spurs on weekend.

If Tuanzebe is fit he should start.

I don’t really care. Rest the knackered players and just make sure we don’t get embarrassed.

Can only really do with 3 points on Saturday.

I’d play my best XI. Need some momentum at this stage again. Tuesday to Saturday is a healthy gap anyway. Romero deserves some gametime though and we need a left-footed player on the left, so time for Shaw to sink or swim.

    Romero
    Valencia Smalling Blind Shaw
    Matic Herrera
    Mkih Mata Rashford
    Lukaku

Martial coming on with 20-25 minutes left is a given.

Is this another banana-skin in waiting?
Almost regularly, whatever manager, we seem to take a dip in form sometime from between mid-Oct up to early December. This 'poor spell' has gone on for years, during this period we either suffer a surprise defeat, and/or get our biggest losing margin, in recent seasons for me its a 'left over' from the 'negativity' of the Liverpool games.
The Swansea game will either lift us and 'start the engine' again, or it will be our next shameful episode in this period

Swansea are a better team than Huddersfield, imo. Or thereabouts. And will probably be for it. Will be a very difficult game again.

Any news regarding Carrick being finally available? Or just wishful thinking?

Ugh. Can't we just skip this? I need more time to find my optimism again.

    Can we not?
I think we can risk our participation in the League Cup, we won it last year and it won't change much in the general apprehension of our season later. And, unless we field a defensive team, like in 3-5-2, with youngsters, it will risk the players available for the much more important coming games in the Premier League.

I dunno mate, I think we really need a strong performance and a win here. We need an answer after yesterday's game. The atmosphere is heavy now and I'm sure the players feel it too, imagine what it'd be like if we get yet another negative result against Swansea. Last thing we need before playing a team like Spurs. We need clear heads against them, as much as fresh legs.

Im worried he wont rest any of them cause he might be worried of losing two in a row.

Can't see us presenting a challenge to Spurs at all if Matić and Herrera start this game. It's really one or the other. My view: field a sitting back counterattacking second team in survival mode and hope for the best.

Definitely think it's time to leave out Valencia, Matic, and Lukaku (though due to limited numbers the latter may have to travel and be on the bench anyway). At least one of the kids will start, probably the other on the bench unless José is going full rest mode before the Spurs game (which I wouldn't care about, even if I want us to win this thing again, it's the least of our priorities).

    Romero
    Darmian Smalling Lindelof
    Tuanzebe Herrera McTominay Shaw
    Mata Martial Lingard
    ---
J.Pereira; Young, Blind; Matic, Mkhitaryan; Rashford, Lukaku

Injuries are definitely catching up with us. If none of Fellaini, Pogba, Carrick, or Bailly make a miraculous recovery, then this is the best 18 we can go with (I think it's definitely going to be too soon for Jones, Rojo, and Zlatan obviously). Ideally I wouldn't even want a lot of the players I've put on the bench there in the travelling squad at all. However, unless José is willing to take more young players depending on the youth team fixtures, they're going to have to. We're only able to leave out one first-team player completely (bar de Gea) and I'd always wager that guy is likely to be Valencia due to the knee problem and the fact we actually have some kind of cover for his position.

Part of me is just looking at this game as a throw away - I'd be happy to get it played with no injuries / red cards and as little effort put in as possible. However, a win, even against a poor Swansea in the least important competition would do us a lot of good before some huge games.

IMO we need to protect our critical players here

Matic lukaku and rashford IMO should all not play a minute in this game or the benfica game next week

We have spuds and Chelsea next two weekends so we have to be ready for them with our main spine 100%

I put rashford in there because I think he is our best attacking threat tbh and he has had a knock midweek

I am not too bothered if we go out here but would be obviously good to get a win immediately after a defeat

A quickfire opportunity to get some confidence back. Hopefully some sort of progress in injuries, as Bailly, Jones and Fellaini seem a bit unclear

I almost forgot Carrick, which is one of those how on earth has he managed to get injured ones.

We don't have the quality right now to leave those 3 out.

I think at least 2 will play.

Otherwise what does centre mid look like for instance? McTominay and Herrera?

Rashford looked just fine yesterday but I wouldn't even include Lukaku and Matic in the squad. I realize that Mou might be tempted to have Lukaku on the bench in case that we need a goal but Matic needs some rest since he played two games for Serbia recently while Lukaku got some rest. The games against Spurs and Chelsea are extremely important.

I know Darmian is bad going forward, but even so he must play ahead of Tuanzebe. I feel Lindelöf plays “better” on the right. And why wouldn't Blind get a game? Herrera playing is dangerous.

We can't afford any big injuries in this game, the priority is the league and Spurs next weekend. I think we are one big injury away from meltdown now. I want a response after that shit show yesterday but we need to priorities the league. The league cup ain't going to cut it this year. This is the time for huge squad rotation. Axel, Mc Tominay, Shaw, Darmian, Jesse. Rest Lukaku, De Gea, Rashford, Matic. It's all about next week, we ain't getting momentum from Swansea in the cup, only fatigue.

I find it hard to rest Rashford, really, unless he's carrying an injury, since he just had 45' last game. Lukaku, on the contrary, has had a run of games in row. De Gea was never going to start, anyhow. Even Tuanzebe and McTominay should start, really.

Rashford picked up a knock against Benfica, he looked good yesterday but we need him to be explosive for spurs. Playing him in the week could be a mistake in my opinion. It's about proper rest and energy levels with an early kick off.

I'm presuposing we should prioritise Lukaku's rest, instead of Rashford's.

I think Lindelof needs to learn to play on the left side - he does when it's a back three but not when it's a two? He isn't better than Bailly, Jones, or Smalling and they're all better on the right side. What's the point of him if he can't play on the left? If José saw Bailly and Lindelof as his future CB's then that's where he's going to be.

Herrera is pretty much forced to play unless José will trust Tuanzebe or Blind in central midfield, which I doubt. This is why I think we'll play a back three due to lack of CM's available and the need to rest Matic first. Blind will be involved in the game at the least, may even start on the left side of the back three putting Lindelof in the middle or on the right as you suggested. Darmian could be wing back or on the bench.

I'd guarantee that's our 18 though, just a few question marks on who starts out of Shaw/Blind/Darmian/Tuanzebe.

Lindelöf has experience playing on the left at Benfica too, but he's right footed and his main asset is to distribute game from the back with his slick passing, so I'm not sure what insisting on him on the left accomplishes. Anyhow, he's not in contention to a starter now, even less after Rojo comes back, and Jones does it on the left center whenever needed.
