Fletcher has been poor this season, but if Herrera is out then I'd rather Fletch played than throwing in Carrick or playing someone out of position. I know it'll slow down our passing a bit, but we have enough quality going forward and can make a change if needed. However, it will probably be Fellaini as he's fit now...

    de Gea
    Rafael Jones Rojo Shaw
    Blind
    Fellaini di Maria
    Mata
    van Persie Falcao

Assuming one of Jones/Smalling will be fit to start and Carrick will make the bench.
I would definitely prefer Fletcher in that role ahead of Fellaini. At least Fletcher is disciplined and can follow instruction. I'd worry Fellaini will go wandering again.

Surely we don't need two defensive midfielders against the Baggies!?

Blind is mobile, Carrick is static, I wouldn't focus on the starting position, I'd deploy Blind as a B2B or to push up with ADM when attacking..
But that takes the position of someone who could offer far more offensively.

    I'd like to see....

    Rafael - Jones - Rojo - Shaw

    ----------Carrick-----Blind-----------
    ------------------Mata-------------------
    Januzaj-------------------Di Maria
    -----------------Falcao------------------

Right balance between solidity and attacking talent - assuming Herrera isn't 100%

I'd play roughly the same line-up against West Brom that played Everton, minus the injured players of course.

    de Gea
    Rafael - Jones - Rojo - Shaw
    Blind
    Pereira - di Maria
    Mata
    van Persie - Falcao

Subs: Lindegaard, Smalling, Blackett, Carrick, Fellaini, Januzaj, Wilson
I predict quite a few changes for the Chelsea game with a more conservative approach, so I see no need to change our attacking formation and personnel for the West Brom game.

Very attacking line-up, certainly on paper. I would have a few concerns over di Maria and Rojo's 'readiness' for the game if you will, following their travels with the national team, but Rojo didn't feature in the last game against Hong Kong and di Maria only had a short cameo off the bench.

I don't think it would be prudent for van Gaal to employ the 4-4-2 diamond against Chelsea, as we will get cut apart with their quick transitions down the flanks and it will be near impossible to contain Hazard either wide or centrally with that kind of attacking personnel and negligence toward defensive work from some players.

Against West Brom however, we should have enough to overpower them and it's also a solution to the short-term captaincy conundrum if van Persie starts again. I don't see a more suitable alternative to Pereira on the right side of midfield in Herrera and Valencia's absence, so we should be able to maintain a lot more control and fluidity in midfield with Pereira.

Hopefully, we will be in a comfortable position with some time remaining so we can offer Carrick and Januzaj minutes ahead of what could be a decisive game for us against Chelsea, as both might be needed for tactical reasons.

I agree with your post but I am doubtful whether changing things for chelsea is the best way to go. So far this season we have seen our players get confused when LVG tried anything other than the diamond. Even in the past few games they couldn't follow his instructions of holding onto possession and seeing out the game and his subs were also ineffective. Given this, I am not so sure if this team at this point can alter their style of play effectively and adapt on the fly.

I just feel that whatever LVG wants to play against Chelsea he should play the same way against West Brom. I understand that they are different teams who play differently but if we score early then he should change the formation to the counter attacking one we might deploy against Chelsea. This will give him some sort of feedback whether his players can follow what he is trying to implement.

The name just makes me shudder now, can we not just pretend he doesn't play for us and sell him cheap through the backdoor, it's the only hangover left of last season

If Herrera isn't fit then start Pereira but I wouldn't be surprised to see Fletcher in this case being an away game and all. I don't think it will be ideal for Pereira to make his Premier League debut but I would like to see it.

I don't get why people want Andreas Pereira to play against West Brom. He's not yet ready to play as a central midfielder for the first team given his lack of discipline in that role. I don't see him mature enough to play a central midfield role as of yet. Maybe playing him in a more attacking role would suit his strengths, but playing him in central midfield when he doesn't have the energy levels and discipline to do so doesn't make sense.

Sure, he's great on the ball, has very good vision, makes sensible passing choices, and loves to be involved on the ball, but he doesn't have the energy levels to cover a large amount of ground and the discipline in his game to prevent us from becoming too open.

I'd rather play Fletcher than Pereira on the right side of central midfield. In a more free role, Fletcher may be able to perform better and not be as timid as he was in his first three matches this season.

West Brom have been throwing out

    -------------Berahino-------------
    -------------Sessegnon-------------
    Brunt-Morrison-Gardner-Dorrans
    Pocognoli-Lescott-Dawson-Wisdom
    --------------Foster-----------------

With the midfield's guile and technical quality making up for their lack of even the slightest bit of pace or defensive qualities.

So, I'd like to see Blind on Sessegnon, Herrera (or if still out Valencia) and Di Maria with the freedom to run at them, Falcao up front, Mata as the 10 (he really should have a decent game with West Brom's lack of a real DM) and Januzaj starting instead of Van Persie.

West Brom are basically a 10-13th placed La Liga team right about now. Fast striker, clever 10, 4 midfielders who can pass and shoot but aren't quick or good at shutting down opponents, one talented but slow CB and his young partner who really needs to be upgraded, but if he was better he'd get bought, a shot stopping keeper and well, their fullbacks are actually not very La Liga, so it breaks down there. Gamboa looks to be their next RB, though, and he is.

So, uh, Van Gaal should prepare like he was back at Barca and Pepe Mel should never have been fired?

Us and Monday night games never fills me with confidence. A win here would be just as important as as the Everton result though, as we have Chelsea to face after. It's vital we go into that on a high.

The only good thing about not being in Europe at all is that it should allow us to play our best players week in week out in the league. And people still want Di Maria rested?

A lot of rumors saying that Jones, Smalling, Carrick and Evans should be ok for this Monday. Hopefully it's correct. As I said before, I would like to play a few of them in order to build their game before Chelsea, City and Arsenal. We still have a few injuries also.

Therefore, WBA is always a tough trip and we should be better to win this game. We have to win it and we can win it if our defenders decide to play together. Against them, if we can control the game, the tempo, avoid Sessegnon and Berahino to take the spaces and be very very very solid on set pieces, I think that we should be ok. Contolling their midfield is the key, and this will be a battle

As only a few players went on a long trip and the fact we're playing on Monday gives us an extra day of rest.

Thanks, that was a good watch.

I thought Herrera was out but it seems he's having a late fit test afterall. I hope he's not rushed in too early.

Remember when we used to think oh we could rest a few players for this with big games coming up! Not possible anymore, but looking forward to the game! Interested to hear who's back and who he pairs up.

I wouldnt like to see Herrera risked unless he's fully fit, or we have no-one else. See how Di Maria Falcao etc have travelled. Januzaj could get a look if they seem tired.

Think it might be time to unleash Januzaj, either instead of Mata or RVP. The quality of football from our front three has been rather underwhelming this season. With some big matches coming up, we do need to find something extra.
Or as you say with big games coming up do you play these players into form and get a bit of continuity. Its a tricky mix. Personally I'd be surprised if we started Januzaj against Arse, Chels or City so maybe its best to get some continuity going.

I do really rate Januzaj though, and I think if given a chance he could easily take it giving LVG another question mark.

Players who feature in todays' Getty Images training pics: Lindegaard, Blackett, Rafael, Shaw, Rojo, Jones, Smalling, Fletcher, Anderson, Valencia, Pereira, Carrick, Fellaini, Blind, Herrera, Young, Di Maria, Januzaj, Mata, RVP, Wilson, Falcao + the unavailable Rooney. Usual caveats about some players training but not photographed, while others merely taking part in the warm-up (when pics are taken) but not the main group session.
