How is he starting ahead of Periera and Fred. Either they're shite in training or they slept with Jose's missus.

Yeah, let's stop this now. Another good young player produced by United who will go on to have a solid career but I'm not convinced it'll be in the Premier League.

He must have a good attitude, to be so highly rated by Mourinho. But, I also feel that he's being using as a pawn by Mourinho, as a protest to the Board in not being able to buy all the players he wanted in the summer. He's an inexperienced midfielder, so why throw him under the bus by playing him as a central defender? He really shouldn't be starting at home against Newcastle, alongside another defensive midfielder, in preference to Fred, Mata and Perreira. I hope that he is mentally strong, because Mourinho isn't doing him any favours at the moment.

Thought he started fairly sharply in midfield, but then Jose sticks him in defence Again? I don't understand what he's doing, he's well out of his depth ffs.

It's unfair and inhumane. Shouldn't have started today anyway but if someone had to move into the defence it should've been Matic.

He should have subbed either him or Matic in the first place and put Mata on, I have no idea why he thinks subbing Bailly is going to help. All it did was put more pressure on us, upset Mctominay and Bailly in the process.

Then he proceeds to put Pogba in CB at HT

Why does a Scotland international have an England flag to represent his nationality by the way? Change that, whoever changes these things.

Another average player in the squad, if he wasn't a United youngster we wouldn't look twice into signing him from another team, a nothing midfielder, all he has is height and even then he isn't the most physically imposing player, Cleverley was better and that's saying something. Feels like Mourinho keeps using him to try using a point, where's Fred?

Felt really sorry for him after he made a fairly decent start before the goal. Hope his confidence recovers.

Ya he looked really up for it, won possession three times in first two and a half minutes, then unfortunately for him got moved to cb at a time we looked like a house of cards. I think had he had a shocker in his natural role it would be worse, most people realise he was given a tough job yesterday

Losing to Comeback Winning!
I don't get the motivation behind him playing this game, as imo it's not the right game for him.

Is Mou trying to ruin his confidence? then threw him as a fecking CB, then said he's scared or something end game press interview?! Damn it. Scapegoating him?

McT did fine at the first 5-10 mins playing at midfield - active composed neat passes around, kept on passing Pogba, and Matic play more comfortably joining in attacks.

Then the horror at CB. Geez. Screw defense balance, we're losing, Mou should've let him stay at mid, 3-5-2.

Nothing player, simply not PL level for me.

Feel sorry for the lad, it's not his fault he's being played at CB, when he can't remotely pass or defend properly. We might have conceded even more goals after he switched to CB.

Baffling how he starts, when the likes of Fred, Herrera and Periera are left on the bench.

Should be out on loan.
He should be released, possibly the worst player I ever saw playing for us, shocking. At defending, can’t pass, his passing is worse than Smallings, his touch is abysmal, is totally reckless too, he’s late to everything, positionally all over the place. Absolutely hate to see him in the team ahead of anyone else, who is good at football, McT is not he should play a different sport

Not that baffling sadly - Mourinho is the manager

Just a young kid who plays midfield but for some strange reason Jose has used him in central defence? Why take off Bailly to put him in defence, is this saying Bailly is not up to the job?
Think McTominay will be an ok player but hes never United class just a stop gap player. Onwards and upwards chaos.

I feel for him, he's being used like a pawn in Jose's tug of war with Woodward and there's probably guys in the squad wondering how he is even getting game time ahead of them. Especially Pereira after doing everything asked of him in preseason, only to sit and languish on the bench while Matic and McTominay look substandard for the minutes they are getting.

If Jose wanted to prove the lack of CBs he should have subbed McTominay off and played Matic at CB. This decision to play him at CB in the last couple of games is very curious indeed.

I think Schmeichel got it bang on yesterday.

McTominay was the player who deserved to come off at 17 mins but Mourinho knew it would destroy him mentally so he persevered with him until half time.

What he should have done though is kept him at CM and put Matic at the back.

I don't get what the manager sees in him. Should never be starting ahead of Fred or Pereira.

If he was 5'7 he wouldnt get a game. You guys know the answer, he's our 4th tallest player in the squad and Mourinho can get praise and credit if he turns out well because he picked him. Don't expect anything to change because he was scared and played out of position.

When Mourinho said he was scared, I laughed. Genuinely could not see he played a role in the boy being scared.
Young player being played out of position has a disaster the previous week, then his genius manager puts him in the same position in front of 76,000 people at home, with his team under the cosh.

Except he said McTominay was scared entirely because of him and the media around the whole talk of Mourinho being sacked. He's given McTominay a complete pass for being shit by blaming it on the media surrounding Mourinho's sacking. Mourinho has enough faults, you don't need to make stuff up.

He was a disaster in that spell at CB. Mou and Utd were incredibly fortunate that the decision to move him there was not against a decent side because the game would have been dead and going towards humiliation.

What is it that he actually do ? I know he wasn't the worst today but come on.

He's simply not good enough but he should not even be in this position. First it's on Mourinho with his outdated view of football who rather have tall players in midfield or defence in this case rather than players who can actually pass the ball forward.

Second it's on the other players who should give their 150% in training to actually be picked by Mourinho.

I truly believe that McTominay wouldn't even play for a team like Southampton yet he keeps getting minutes here, it's crazy.

Agreed! Seems bizarre how much talent we've got in our youth set up yet we play one of the most average players I've ever seen in a United shirt! Play Garner or Gomes FFS at least they are technically gifted and able to keep the ball!

Mourinho's picking him to make a point only, it's not because he's actually a good player, because he isn't, he's bang average.

Why would we play technically gifted footballers? I though the goal was to have a starting 11 where the goalkeeper was the most technically gifted!

Was fine today and the only defender that actually tried to move the ball forwards. Had some nice passes between the line at times but it's not his fault that our team is so static. It's also not his fault that he had to play because we only have 1 fit centre back. Did well considering he was out of position and hasn't played in a while.

A young player playing in a defence that Jose has already said is not good enough. Could understand if he was next to Rio and Vidic, for example, but he wasn't.

That said, I don't think he was bad today. He did what he had to do, and was probably our most threatening player on set pieces.

How far down the table do you get before finding another team he'd get in? I think you'd have to go into the Championship.

He was better than the £30m Matic, I'd much rather see young guys like that learning game by game than Matic regressing game by game.

In saying that, I'd rather see Andreas play instead of Fellaini, Dalot instead of Darnian etc, it's clear as day our "star" players are not getting us anywhere, what could really happen if we give Andreas, Dalot, Greenwood and Chong, I'd rather finish 17th in the league playing hungry players wanting to learn than 10th with overpriced mercenaries with piss poor attitudes.

Dig up stupid!
I actually feel sorry for him,its not the first time he's been thrown into games, out of position and expected to perform. He did OK today, better than most tbf

This is a kid just breaking through. Under saf he'd be getting 10 mins here and there, the odd league Cup game or cl group dead rubber He'd be put in strong teams who could carry and cover him, and he'd play in relatively safe positions.

Mou is using him as a political pawn and risks hammering his confidence imo

Like most I've not been blown away by his ability but so far he has at least showed a strong attitude and generally tried his bollocks off, it's a shame so few of the others players haven't

I thought he was fine overall. A poor short pass early on and one inaccurate long ball that it wasn't clear who the intended target was, otherwise perfectly decent.
