A player like him deserves his thread, no matter what happens in the game and/or the tournament. Highest scorer in France history, always doubted but he never gives up. He is an example, a true pro and a great guy.

Didn’t benzema call him a donkey? It’s hilarious that he takes Benzemas place in the squad to become tbe leading goal scorer for France in what has been an especially dominant run for the national team. Well done to the lad.

Not a donkey but a go-kart and himself an F1. Context explains those words tbh, Benzema was still very bitter about not being called up

Has more games where he does goes missing than he has good games. Take nothing away from this achievement, but to suddenly start speaking about him as if he is one of the greats is a bit over the top.

Pretty crazy to think that in recent years France have had forwards like Henry, Trezeguet, Cantona, Djorkaeff, Papin and Benzema yet Giroud is their all time top scorer

He is the all time scorer of France. He became that tonight, when was a more appropriate time to make a thread about him ?
I completed disagree with your statement when it comes to France anyway, about him missing more than having good games

Meaning what exactly ?
That people start praising players as soon as they watch them perform decently at the world stage.
It's not like we haven't watched him for almost 10 years in the epl.
As for his national team record. He's been scoring against the same shitty teams as Lukaku has. Only has 6 goals against top 10 teams to his name.

I don't think he is being recognized as a great. His career is being recognized as a great career and how much of an inspiration he is for achieving what he has despite his limitations

He's been praised for a long time for France by people who have common sense. I have no idea what you're on about tbh. This is about his performances for France.A Utd fan should know the importance of scoring against shitty teams, I'll never understand this denigration. A goal is a goal. 52 goals should be praised, specially considering where he comes from and who has played for France

It’s amazing that people still throw the comments about Giroud around like they do, did they miss the impact he had on France at the last World Cup? Or how much worse they looked at the Euros when Benzema was playing?

He fits the teams needs perfectly.

No just making an observation. I didn't mean this in a bad way, fair play to Giroud just pointing out it's strange how things work out sometimes considering most people would say the other players I listed are quite a bit more talented.

Still would expect Mbappe to break the record by age 27 or 28 provided nothing major happens to prevent him from doing so.

Giroud's France record won't last too long, Mbappé is only 24 goals behind and he's 13 years younger than Giroud. You imagine Mbappé will have that by the time of the next World Cup.

I was just pulling your leg as well, proabbly shouldve added a smiley, i meant that no way someone would immediately pull that out without checking :D but yeah, hes underrated in the sense that he usually isn't mentioned in the same breath as Henry and Benzema, but really isn't that far behind.

 I was actually worried I would miss a high profile French striker when listing the names.

I think Giroud is a good striker for sure but I would definitely say he is a fair way behind Henry and Benzema. Henry specifically was absolutely magical in the premier league and you could make a decent argument for him being the best PL player ever.

Mbappe can absolutely smash this record for sure

I think France play better while he is on the pitch and I thought he was fantastic for them at the last world cup (Where I'm pretty sure he didn't score?) too.

I've also seen better players than him play poorly so I don't think it's solely a case of being elevated by the players around him.

The guy just had a legitimate overhead volley ruled because the ref blew prematurely (and incorrectly IMO) so now he's combining good all round play with goals.

I could understand saying "He's been great for ages but he's only getting recognized because of the goals now" but not "People are only saying he's good because he scored a couple" personally.

I love the recency bias
Giroud is class, he was class in the PL, and has been since. A player doesn't have to be the best in the world to be praised and considered really good, you seem to always throw wobblers at people recognising very good footballers.

Yea I think he will put the record well outside of anyone else's grasp by the time he retires.
What I like about Mbappe so far this tournament is that he seems to be equally happy to provide too, if he was all about the goals his stats would be better but France would be worse (reminds me of another high profile forward).

Homelander ?
Yes

France could easily be playing with a "Feed" Mbappe system but he's obviously happy enough with the fact he can be a team player (and still have enough chances, as we've just seen).

I’ve always though Giroud is one of the most under appreciated players of recent years not just for France but at club level too.

And it would have been to obvious to focus solely on him. As good as he is, he needs others to thrive

Yup and some of the backlash to the OP for the thread (which isn't even lavishing a hell of a lot of praise on to to Giroud) kind of highlights it.

He's having a very good tournament but no one will convince me he had a good World Cup in Russia.

He was playing the same way when France weren't good.
You miss the point. Quite obviously you will look better with better players, that goes for anyone. As in why does he win and score with France now but with Arsenal he couldn’t get them over the line.

The difference is France are much better than Arsenal. See the post I responded to for context
