19 children and 2 teachers killed in Texas school shooting (24 May 2022)

For those who might not know, that’s the democrat running for governor…

Meh. The Republicans will keep shouting that Democrats want to take away the constitutional rights and politicizing the tragedy.
Their voters will agree that evil Democrats who are anti-Christ worshippers and agents of communist countries are trying to take over.

Same old saga repeats.

he can if he wants to. he can also sign an eo canceling student debt. instead he is doing nothing.

If you look at what her plans were there an executive order did not include that specific thing, as it was under the legislation section. EOs are more or less just directives for how a POTUS wants their administration to behave regarding enforcing existing legislation, so their power is limited.

The tweet you linked to doesn't even have an EO for banning assault weapons... it includes "Passing a new federal assault weapons ban" because Elizabeth Warren knows what you can and can't do with an EO.

Yeah, nothing meaningful can happen without Congress, the President, and the Supreme Court. Also, for those living in Europe, I am not sure you understand how well the NRA did in linking guns to freedom, religion, and patriotism. I live in a blue state (but a red county) and I can't drive anywhere without seeing a truck with some sort of guns/freedom type sticker or decal. It's tied to their identity and I don't see it changing.

"No it isn't"

Very very true.

It happened in Australia after port Arthur. Everyone came together to say enough is enough. The government discredited the NRA as extremists. America stops needing to see itself as a special case. You don’t exist in a vacuum. Other countries have searched their souls and made changes.

I know it didn’t include specifically banning assault rifles. But you get my drift. There are things that can be achieved through eo.

Look up how many Port Arthur sized shootings we've had since Australia had Port Arthur.

Some analyst/politician was on MSNBC last night discussing the second amendment was written before the modern bullet existed. Small lead balls/pellets were used in that era. The person said he doubts this particular amendment would have been written the way it was and so vague if high-projectile instruments like an AR-15 or M-4 had existed. That and we did not have the uniformed services like we see today so the militia was necessary to national/state defense.
Just to reinforce, the United States Army literally did not exist in 1791.

I know that. I was giving an example of a platform that used eo as a means for stricter gun control measures. like, why is this confusing?
Probably because you're changing the subject instead of saying "oh, you were right, the president actually can't do what I said".

any theories on why this basically wasn't a thing before Columbine, limited to maybe 10-15 incidents of the 80 years preceding it
Columbine was/is a meme, and each incident reinforces it. That's my thought at least.

Now it’s just false flag events with crisis actors. Gotta keep the public entertained / brainwashed.

So apparently guns are being banned at Trump's speech to the NRA this Friday...surely they should just give him a gun if the presence of guns in the crowd is a security risk??

12 months???

you do know there are mass shooting in the states everyday not all of them reported. Sometimes multiple shootings every day.

take a look at the last two weeks only.
You have completely missed the point of my comment but at the same time have totally affirmed the point of my comment.

Average Americans and the Dems need do to do a lot more. Every time it's the same repeated lines then quiet until the next time. It's not enough to point the finger at the enemy within.

For anyone interested, the rule for Executive Orders is that it must be “issued in relation to a law passed by Congress or based on powers granted to the President in the Constitution and must be consistent with those authorities.”
https://www.phe.gov/s3/law/Pages/ExecOrders.aspx

That’s why the President can’t just issue an EO banning a gun or guns. There’s no current legislative or constitutional basis for it.

Yep. Shooting from a flintlock musket was more of a shoot and pray weapon considering how many things could go wrong in attempting to hit a target. There is just no way that the Founding Fathers could ever imagine the kind of technological advances that firearms would get in the second half of the 19th century and onwards from the German-made needle guns to machine guns, to smokeless powder, to increasingly faster bullets and to assault rifles.

There is little to no logic in applying a text from the late 18th century without any sight of the bigger picture 2 centuries and a half later. In my book, people who still support the Second Amendment without any solid consideration of the whole context are no different from the early 20th century generals described in The Guns of August as the main people responsible for the butchery that was World War 1 because of outdated tactics from decades long gone while disregarding technological advances.

I think it would be difficult to summarize or pin the blame on a specific thing. There are many layers to what is happening in the US; things like this and the epidemic of ‘deaths of despair’ point to systemic dysfunctions that will take some time in unraveling.
