With so many going for a conventional 4-4-2, I thought he'd have gone a lot earlier. Probably the second best choice for wide right in a midfield four.

It took a long time (and a lot of injuries) for him to settle for second behind Beckham. Until we got the Treble it was never at all clear, and had he moved to us in 95 I reckon Becks would have wound up as a central midfielder with sicknote starting on the right. He would have needed to stay injury free though... such a shame.

Given you haven't gone for another Leeds player I won't mind having Martyn there ahead of a Fulham VDS. A bit underrated, that fella. Was key in that strong Leeds team.
Yeah they did that in 1998 in Hoddle's 3-5-2. It worked quite well to be honest as they were able to swap positions as per the flow of the game. Remembering the Argentina game, I'll never forget Anderton's 120-yard recovery run and tackle after Campbell's header from his corner was disallowed.
In that team you would drop Chelsea Essien and play Makelele behind Gerrard/Toure - no brainer and fits like a glove.Here you go:
