Would you rank Barthez’s time with us as a better stint than Onana’s current display?

I’ve seen Onana pull off some incredible saves but he is prone to some basic errors and that’s never what you want in a keeper much less a United one.

Without a showdown of a doubt. Barthez was excellent in his first season.

He then went to pot, but still wasn’t as bad as Onana. The difference is that Fergie was ruthless and binned him. Onana should have been sent packing last summer when it was clear how bad he was.

Every goalkeeper pulls off good saves. You can make a good highlights reel from any keeper.

Hopefully Matic can come out and say he was wrong, he's not one of the worst keepers in our history... He definitely is the worst keeper in our history.

I dont think he made as many errors at his previous clubs as he has with us though.

I believe that is correct. He was regarded as a reliable shot-stopper, though nothing special. But his supposed brilliance was his footwork.

That goal kick in injury time is still annoying me. Shaking his arse at the Lyon fans and then throwing another in 2 minutes later. What kind of fecking shit mentality...

Our two weakest positions are goalkeeper and centre forward. Thats a recipe for disaster if not rectified asap. Shocking transfers really. Can’t blame Amorim whatsoever in this regard.

Beyond a joke now.

I don't rate Baynidr, despite his heroics at the Emirates, so I think we're stuck with this clown for the rest of the season.

We need to look at this in this in the summer. Even if it's just a loan of a competent 'keeper for a season.

At the early stage of the season, if you dare criticized him, his fan army would come down massively on a skeptic and resort to all sorts of name calling. How the tables have turned.

Barthez had similar clownish tendencies to Onana. If we're being chartiable, we could call it an acute improvisational streak. Both made frustratingly random mistakes (Barthez's big howler was the Di Canio "Taxi Cab Fab" goal).

Yeah its mindbending to think that we wasted over 100m on Hojlund and Onana. Just think of where we could use that money this window.
Add in £55m for Mount too. He is the worst out of the lot because he’s never fit. He was in the last year of his contract and we overpaid massively. Onana and Hojlund can say they had some decent games. The same can’t be said about Mount.

Fronting out a bad situation is one thing, but actively mocking and goading points toward something more concerning to me - if there's any time to be humble, it's in a game where you've already made a massive feck up, but he doesn't... he gives it the big 'un before making yet another blunder. Unbelievable.

I'm desperate for him to be sold. Can't be dealing with calamitous keepers; they unsettle far too many players.

Exactly. This should've been a big night for Zirkzee (a player who himself has spent the season under pressure and could do with some confidence/plaudits), and that's just been robbed from him.

Nah, the biggest was this Arsenal game:

At this point though, like with Hojlund, it goes beyond the player. It’s on the manager to take a poorly performing player out of the firing line just to stop the rot, it’s doing neither them or the team any good and will just get worse.

Can we sack this blithering idiot? If I fail to perform the basic tasks of my job, I face repercussions. This guy is an absolute disgrace.

To be fair, Hojlund scored vs Leicester and then scored during the international break for Denmark and first game back vs Forest he was on the bench again. Hojlund seems to score in spurts, so it was better off starting him against Forest to see if he could carry that momentum.

As shit as Onana is, he wasn't wrong either. We are clearly a better team. They had to rely on 2 goalkeeping errors to scratch together a draw at home.
If Lacazette was any good, they win the game. How many cutbacks did they play into our box and wasted them?

I hope someone slips him some doping drug in his coffee and he gets suspended until September, since, let's face it. Ain't nobody buying him from us.

And to think I defended him at one point. Liability at all costs.

This to me is the the major difference in the post Fergie world.

Fergie made mistakes in the transfer market (Tiabi, Prunier, Cryuff Jr, Howard, Djemba Djemba, Bellion) but he didnt shoe horn them into the team and often binned them right away. He was also ruthless at getting rid of players who had seen their form drop, or who no longer played at the level expected (Ince, Keane, Sharpe, Bathez, Hughes, Yorke, Ruud, Veron, Hargreaves, P Neville, Butt, Beckham - all players with multiple league titles).

That hasn't happened since he left... Maguire, Onana, Hojlund, Mount, Shaw, Pogba, Rashford, Martial, Sanchez would have all been shown the door in short order under SAF... now compare this list with the list that Fergie binned, and perhaps we see where the real problem lies.

Hojlund and Garnacho both bad clear opportunities to score. A deflection turned Bruno's shot over the bar. We had several numerical advantages on the break. On top of that, we had just as many cut back opportunities as Lyon, if not more. And again, the only reason they were in the game was down to individual errors.

It's better to be absent than actively harming the side's prospects on the pitch like Onana is.

The worst since Barthez. Calamity goalkeeper prone to the odd moment of brilliance but more moments of bedlam.

Past caring. His mistakes are Amorim's mistakes now by proxy.

Not easy to bin a keeper that costed 50M€ and is probably earning massive wages

Barthez was better than Howard, Carroll, Ricardo and Dean Henderson for starters.

It’s mind bending to think that almost every ETH transfers turned out to be unmitigated disasters that will haunt our club for years to come.

Never seen it with him, even at Ajax never stood out as someone to keep an eye on for instance.

It's a bad state of affairs when a keeper is bad a shot-stopping. It's not mistakes that Onana makes that is the issue, it's his reflective ability when parrying the ball. It's not something that's going to improve as those are subconscious decisions he's making so I don't think it can be drilled out of him by a goalkeeping coach.

The club need to get rid of him ASAP.

I always think a good barometer for a player is if the club they're at disappeared and every player was a free agent where would they end up.

I'm not sure any club in the PL would take him, maybe a non-Europe big three league.

Is that good enough for man united #1 no, not even close.

Has to go this summer I don't care how much we lose.

Starting to actively dislike him which I don't like to ever happen with our players. We've got another keeper who I'm worried every game he's going to cost us. He once again dropped a load more clangers and he's having a massively negative impact on our season.

It's time to go, can we really risk another year of him as our first choice?

Feel a bit sorry for him.

He is after all a human with feelings even if he is a rubbish goalkeeper.

Felt he was nervous all game.

They had more possession and more shots.

Honestly, I think both teams looked poor. Lyon couldn't really put anything significant together and when in dangerous position either mishit shots or put them into the stands. Like United it's reflective of having a low calibre of players quality wise.

Either way Onana looks a Muppet because his performance affirmed Matic's criticism. There was absolutely no need to rile up tensions and perhaps if Lyon didn't feel the need to have something to prove Zirkzee's goal would have been the deciding factor.
