Manchester United forum advocating for a City player to win the Ballon d'Or. Jesus wept.
Don’t panic mate, it’s just grown-up football supporters being honest and objective, it’s what we come into this forum for.
If we wanted deluded tribalism we’d all be on rawk.

If there's any sort of justice in the world the top 5 will be Haaland, Rodri, KDB, Grealish and Stones/Dias.

100% going to be Messi. Only a tremendous Haaland performance in the CL final could have tipped the scales.

KDB deserves it ahead of Haaland. So either him or Messi. Probably should be Messi - that world cup can’t be topped.

Messi single-handedly won the world cup.

Haaland scored a load of tap ins for a financially doped, sports washing entity, currently charged with 115 violations of the regulations.

Almost feels a bit wrong Messi getting it for achievements that are almost a year old but if you're to judge it historically, he had arguably a top 3 World Cup in history and any player in history that was eligible that had as good a World Cup as he did would 100% get the award.

Haaland will probably be second then and third will be between De Bruyne and Mbappé for the same reasons - CL vs a distant memory World Cup.
Messi had performed well at this World Cup tournament, arguably the best World Cup performances of his life( ahead of 2014). But I wouldn’t put him in the top3 WC in any players and tournaments.

How often are the bookies correct on this?
Very. VVD was the favourite in 2019, but it's not like Messi was as far behind as Haaland is to pull off some reasonably miracle run to it.

I'm in it for the drama, so I hope messi wins it, just to enjoy the ronaldo fans meltdown afterwards.

Haaland was not even the best player of his team last year, that was KDB or Rodri, and frequently ghosting in semis and finals. 7 semis & finals, and 0 goals + assists. Rodri was chosen as the CL player of the year. Haaland will be chosen as the best striker, but that's not enough to be the best player..

Messi was the best player in the WC, chosen as the playmaker in the world over KDB, the assist king in Ligue 1, had similar G+A numbers to Mbappe..

This is wrong.

Haaland was definitely City's best player over the course of the season.

City had an underwhelming first half of the season culminating in Pep's "happy flowers" rant after the Tottenham game. Rodri was inconsistent, De Bruyne was in and out with injury.

In the second season the rest of the team picked up of course. But as proven by City's awards, and the PL's awards, you cannot make any logical case for Haaland not being City's best player over the entire season.

Haaland failing to show up in the later stages of knockouts is going to hurt him here despite a brilliant domestic campaign for the league. It’ll be Messi who takes it.
He didn't "fail to show up".

He didn't score goals but it's not like his performances were a drag on the team. For those who argue footballers are more than goals.. they can be hypocrites when it comes to Haaland.

See below, you're welcome. seems like most people below are clueless when it comes to the best player in City as they are not obsessed with tap-in numbers. See how many times they mention KDB, Rodri vs Haaland..

He was simply useless. nothing much to offer when he does not score unlike Mbappe. Worst player on the pitch in the CL final, having like 3-4 touches whole game..

What were you saying about reddit again being more knowledgeable than journalists and footballers in the sport? Are they obsessed with tap ins too?

I thought that was De Bruyne. Even the matchwinner had a poor game (he said so himself).

The best player on the pitch was John "Beckenbauer" Stones but I don't see his name being mentioned anywhere.

Messi will win it.
It will be interesting, if they find a way to include Ronaldo in the short list.

Messi will probably win and should win.

Haaland didn't show up enough in big games and had such a strong team around him. Not winning will motivate him even more though to stay and win with city and get more success.

The third person in the shortlist will be either De Bruyne, Rodri or Mbappe.

What does this even mean?
I'm going to guess the idea is that Morocco getting to the semi was a bigger performance than for Argentina to win it. Like Greece 2004 or Leicester winning the PL (not necessarily the same scale but you get the idea).

That’s not even remotely close to the truth.
Who was better? Maradona was, Pele, Cruyff, Ronaldo and a few others would be up there. Considering the context of Messi's last hurrah, his legacy on the line. Had an impact on all the games. Saved Argentina with a stunning goal against Mexico when they were heading out. Scored a fine goal against Australia. The best pass of the tournament against Netherlands in the quarter-finals. The best assist and dribble of the tournament against Croatia in the semi-finals. Two goals in the final and scoring in the shootout. He scored 7 goals, only Mbappé and Ronaldo have scored more in a single World Cup in the past 50 years. He had 21 key passes, second most progressive passes after Modric, third most dribbles per 90.

Messi had performed well at this World Cup tournament, arguably the best World Cup performances of his life( ahead of 2014). But I wouldn’t put him in the top3 WC in any players and tournaments.
Wasn't arguably his best, easily his best by far. Yeah it's fair not to put him in the top 3, but I think after Maradona 1986 he'd be in a category of very elite performances and then take your pick.

Onana must be in with a shout of the goalkeeper award, he was a Champions League finalist last season and kept more clean sheets in the competition than any other keeper with 8 in 13 matches.

Messi should win it. The World Cup he played was brilliant.
