I think Berbatov was kept on simply because for all the talk about how many strikers we've got, it's really Rooney+Welbeck+Hernandez for the important competitions, and if one of them got injured for a prolonged period (particularly Rooney), we'd want Berbatov there. Not getting maximum use from him, but I can see the reasoning.

It is to the point that I will take a one leg Welbeck over him. The notion that he is brought on to keep possession is ridiculous. He loses possession with his limited touches done Anderson's stray passes.

I hope we sell him in January if we can get an offer of 8-10m having no intention of renewing his contract even if it leaves us a striker short going into the New Year. Great player, but doesn't bring much to the team these days anymore, and certainly not with the attitude a United player should display on the pitch whatsoever

2. I'd argue that United's biggest weakness up front is that they haven't effectively replaced Saha... Welbeck shows promise with his power, movement and pace, but lacks the touch Saha displayed.
Back to Berba... we really should have let him go this summer... and I wonder if Chicha had not been injured this summer if the story might have been different.
I think that Berba and Owen should be allowed to leave. Welbeck and Macheda can cover Rooney and Chica well.
SAF is not stupid. There is a good reason we have 7 first team forwards. If we had sold Berba, Diouf and let Owen go, and Welbeck had got his usual injury issues. We'd have had only Rooney and Chicharito to rely on with Macheda as back up.
Right now we have enough forwards to cater for all scenarios and all competitions. To the extent our forwards can even help us in the event of a midfield injury crisis.

There would be plenty of club's interested in last seasons joint top scorer in fairness, I don't think that's the problem. He doesn't want to leave.

Scholes is my favourite player of all time, closely followed by Eric. Berbatov is a player who has wonderful technical ability and he's the kind of player I want to watch in a utd shirt. He will get games this season and I predict he will see out the remaining two seasons of his contract (at the very least).

2-the weakness was saha's weakness. played great football when healthy but wasn't healthy enough. not really the one on one striker cheech is. he did have one great half season and united still played great stuff with ronaldo , rooney and giggs up top.
3 - berbs has to play or move on.

Yes, apart from those two sticking points Berba is very close to leaving.
With Saha we won 2 titles in 4 and a half seasons, and 1 European Cup. He left in 2008.
Even if Berbatov gets a new 1 year contract next summer, so what is going to happen to him the year after? This same situation we are in now will be rinsed and repeated again.
