Berbatov | Fulham player

I also read that the German press is coming out with ' strong interest from Leverkusen' for him in January. I don't see it happening now, maybe in a year or two, when he wants to finish his career somewhere and for some reason, it is not United.

Also seems like the 'potential' PSG move is becoming less probable since there are strong talks of Pato moving there for around 50 million especially if Tevez goes to Milan.

Interesting transfer wondow coming up....

Btw, pocco, matey, I agree with some of the things you have written but to say that Welbeck is a better player than Berba is a bit funny. Sure he has done extremely well for us this season, he has fit into the team and he is playing well with Rooney, he definitely is talented but he needs a few more years of experience under his belt to possibly become the 'better' footballer. What he does have is impressive confidence for a young one, he has the energy and the legs of a much younger player.

Bayer Leverkusen are desperate to take Dimitar Berbatov back to the Bundesliga and have been in contact with the Bulgarian.

When asked by German tabloid Bild about the move, his representative Ivan Dobrinov replied: 'It’s more than a rumour. Leverkusen have it on their minds to get Berbatov. There is contact, but nothing concrete yet. It all depends on United’s plans.'

Berbatov spent five seasons at the BayArena before his move to Tottenham in 2006 and the striker - despite hitting a hat-trick against Wigan on Boxing Day - has failed to command a first-team place Old Trafford.

Bayer are still fondly remembered by Berbatov, and according to Dobrinov, the two parties have been in regular contact about the 30-year-old's possible return.

'The player has never forgotten Leverkusen, the club is still very dear to him. Furthermore, he has a good relationship with the leadership at Bayer,' Dobrinov said.

Leverkusen CEO Wolfgang Holzhauser was alittle more cagey, although he did confirm that contact had been made.

'I would even say that the contact is friendly,' he added. 'But there is certainly nothing concrete at the moment. I also read that Manchester United would like to extend his contract.'

Convincing stuff from The Daily Mail.

I think they'd either have to offer a substantial amount or Berba would have to push through the move, probably both.

Personally I don't see it happening, certainly not mid-season.

I recall him mentioning in an interview a while back when he was linked with a potential move to Munich that he would only play for Leverkusen again in the Bundesliga. Anyway, don't see it happening soon. We should extend his contract and put all of this to rest.

Sign him up for another couple of years. I'm not being funny, but how great is a settled frontline of Rooney, Hernandez, Welbeck and Berbatov going to look in a couple of years' time - even moreso than now?! It's perfect; the mix of youth, flair, craft and experience.

We wouldn't need to sign anyone up top for a good few years, which means we can then focus on the midfield and perhaps the defence if necessary.

From football365. Pretty harsh and dismissive.

Dimi Berbatov
A specialist in cheap feats. In the past 13 months, Berbatov has registered just 11 league goals, with three of them scored against 10-man Wigan, another as the fifth in a five-goal rout at Fulham, a second hat-trick being netted in another five-goal hammering of a team destined for relegation, and as many as five in the 7-1 hammering of Blackburn last November.

Forgive, therefore, the absence of acclaim for his latest act of flat-track bullying.

Slagging him off for scoring just 11 goals and then listing a dozen is pretty fecking impressive.*

Quality journalism.

*I'm sure most of us here can spot the mistake they've made.

What a bullshit post. It's the same nonsense that's spouted about Robbie Keane's goals for Ireland. I see they don't mention his hat-trick against Liverpool. I suppose that was flat track bullying too.

Nor do they mention the six other league goals he's scored in this vitally important "last 13 months", ie, since the Blackburn game.

Edit: Actually, in the interests of highlighting the complete nonsense that some spacker at f365 made-up, in the f365 understanding of "the last thirteen months" of the premier league, Berbatov has had 15 starts, and scored 18 goals.

I like how those retards at F365 have labelled him a flat track bully. Arsenal, Chelsea and Liverpool certainly could have found "Flat track bully" pretty useful in this weekend.

Leverkusen fans are not convinced he would fit in their team anyway. Most are complaining about a terrible midfield and wonder who'd feed Berbatov if he were to play. Then there are concerns it would disrupt Dutt's (Leverkusen coach) plans to build a new team around young players. There's also the question of finances.

Berbatov is coming into his final 6 months of contract with United having an option to add a further year. I wouldn't be surprised given his age, and contract situation United might well listen to offers. United are also well stocked in that part of the pitch and could well invest the money strengthening other parts of the squad.

I'm still at a loss to understand why Owen was retained.

I don't see him leaving in January. It seems likely that Macheda will go out on loan, and perhaps to Diouf. We will need to keep him around.

Think he'll be off in the summer though for a good fee, a deal that will hopefully satisfy everyone.

I'm still at a loss to understand why Owen was retained.

Goals and experience, and he's no doubt a great influence to the younger players. I also think SAF thought he'd get a little more luck with injury this season, and sadly that hasn't happened.

No chance of him staying beyond the summer. It's such a shame that injuries stopped us ever really getting a chance to see what Owen could do here.

Ask yourselves who would be a better 4th striker - berbatov or Macheda?

I'm coming round to giving him a new 2 year deal - its near impossible to find a player of berbatovs ability who is happy to wait for starts and he is very useful in the home games against teams outside the top 4

If there are to be exits this summer then surely it would be Owen and Diouf with Will Keane and Macheda giving backup to our main 4 strikers

It is different if someone special becomes available though

Do we know for sure he's happy?

He has no choice but to either play out his contract or wait and see what transpires. Of course he is a better alternative to Macheda, but not obviously good enough to play regularly. United are not going to be paying him 100k a week to play a few games a year whilst his stock dwindles with age and running down his contract. United will find a younger replacement in the summer if Berbatov leaves.

Berbatov has a great attitude, he doesn't moan when left on the bench. He's happy here (well he says he is). He has experience plus he offers us something different up front.

I'd rather keep Berba and let Owen go. It's not Owen's fault but unfortunately it just hasn't worked out for him here with injuries and stuff.

Give Berba a year extension and see how it goes.

I think Fergie sees him as a mentor to young players. Massive amounts of experience and knowledge, combined with being arguably one of the finest finishers in the world.

I don't think Owen is finished as a player. His pace has been at the same level for years now so that argument is mute. He's still quite capable of playing the lesser teams in squad rotation. Wouldn't be surprised if he becomes a player/striking coach soon.

More likely a mentor to SAF on horses. Spends more time on the golf course and race courses to be a mentor to young strikers.

Owen doesn't cost us much i would reckon as he is on a pay as you play contract and as he hardly plays we are happy having him with us.

Cantona was known to stay behind and practice as was Beckham and watching the senior players and playing with and against them you would hope the younger players learn something. However its never as clear cut as that.

You think he'll sign an extension just to then be sold?

If he leaves in the Summer, it will almost certainly be on a free.

We're supposed to have an option to extend the deal. But I don't think we'll use it, even though we say we would. There are two sides to everything - you extend his contract in order to sell him, but what if he then refuses to go? You've got another year of paying top wages for a fourth choice striker.

I'm pretty sure we'll be happy to let him go for free in the summer and take him of our wage list.

There's no evidence to suggest he's unhappy though the wages could be an issue

I think he should play more games for us - his scoring record over the last year against the weaker sides is unrivalled - means Rooney can have a rest now and again

If Rooney is injured he gives you something different to welbeck and Hernandez - I'm not a big fan of his style but he is very useful at old Trafford against teams who come to defend

Look at the hassle Tevez caused when he wasn't playing enough - I think if berbatov is satisfied to be used in rotation then he could be worth hanging onto

Thought it strange that Owen made the bench for the CL final ahead of berbatov though and with only 2 starts in the league maybe Fergie is looking elsewhere or ahead to Macheda, Morrison or Keane

Could berba become our next giggs? A senior player we keep on a rolling 1 year contract. I think Giggs is on about £70-80k week - it was mentioned somewhere I can't remember where.

Berba on £100k a week is not much off there and if those that don't want a fourth choice on £5m a year how abaout one on £4m a year? That seem more palatable?

"It's more than a rumour," one of the player's representatives said. "Leverkusen have it on their minds to get Berbatov.

"There is contact, but nothing concrete yet. It all depends on United's plans.
"We wait until 2 January. Until then, United have the option but if that does not happen then Berbatov would be a free transfer in the summer.

"The player has never forgotten Leverkusen, the club is still very dear to him. Furthermore, he has a good relationship with the leadership at Bayer."

Seems to me this may be a bit of a shot across the bows from his agent looking for Utd to make a decision.

I cant see either PSG or Bayer making an offer that would be worth considering in Jan when he'll be free in the summer.

As far as I understood it United have the option to extend his contract.

If nobody comes in for him then I imagine we will extend his contract. He should be a much sought after player, I can see a few offers coming in for him.

On the other hand Popper, PSG will be looking to consolidate their first place. 4 teams within 8 points mid season is not a large gap. Meanwhile Bayer will be looking to consolidate a top 6 position for EL or CL. I think both have legitimate reasons to buy in the winter. Especially with a player of Berbatovs caliber. We wouldn't get more then 10 million, but in retrospect, that turns into 12.5 taking away salary.
