Some pretty damning stories on Martial that I'd never heard before

He's clearly class but I've never been able to shake the feeling that he doesn't have that 'drive' to fulfill his potential.

He's 24 in a few weeks, I'm not saying he's an OAP before people jump on me, but he's not 20 anymore. There's only so long we can point to the moments of brilliance. He's barely progressed since he got here. I desperately want him to fulfil his clear potential, but I'd be lying if I said I believe he will, at least at Utd.

People who talk like we shouldn't bring in another striker because we have him are quite frankly mad.

Many on here in love with the idea of what Martial could be, and not what he currently is. He's got all the materials to be very good, but is unbelievably frustrating.

I hope it can click for him, maybe with more quality around him, some better coaching, we'll see more from him.

Now he's finally getting a run in his favoured position he's doing really well

He's definitely good enough, but we still need competition for him up front

Not to mention, a slightly different type of striker would give us more flexibility in our tactics

if we sign Haaland, i'll be more than happy with Martial in a backup / challenging for a starter role. he can also play wide left too when required.

Said in another thread, getting a new first choice striker in the summer and continuing with the 4-2-3-1 will probably push Martial back onto the left which will bring up all those old arguments about him again. Also, Rashford plays best from the left.

Or it pushes him to try harder to keep the centre forward slot? If he doesn't have the drive and determination to face competition he will fail at every top club.

I liked Martial during his first year with Van Gaal, because the guy was shy, didn't asked for anything and almost tried... Then he began a spoiled kid that was crying for a number 9 position when he can't clearly score more than 10 goals in this position.

He's not in the same planet as Aguero, Kane, Firminho as he doesn't have hunger or a particular high IQ.

I tell you that we will not reach our dream of coming back to the first places with this number 9...

If United were to bring in Halaand and Martial is either placed back onto the left-side or put into a situation where he has to compete for a role in the starting 11 then, soon enough, you'll be hearing murmurs in the press of him looking elsewhere being leaked from his agent.

He played the rotation role for Jose for 2 seasons straight and he clearly didn't enjoy it. There's no way he'd do it for a future campaign.

Then he can bloody go. He'd have to take a step down, because no top club is going to gamble on him being their number 9, and we shouldn't be either.

Then he should leave. If mister doesn't want to compete or rotate, he has nothing to do in a team that want to reach the top....

Unless we are United and we accept average player or mediocrity

If he can't handle that, why should we accommodate him (in any way)? He isn't a player who has established himself in any shape or form at the highest level.

The point has been made on here in numerous threads: be against splashing obscene amounts on Haaland (or anyone similar) for any number of reasons - fair enough. Be against it because it might "upset" Martial - not a valid argument, period.

Please give us the gist.
Haven't watched the video but Daniel Taylor did an article in the Athletic about him where he claims that one of his teammates in the LVG era told him that he was convinced Martial ducked a game because he couldn't be bothered. He trained properly shortly after.

Also quotes Ranieri who said he had a poor mentality whilst at Monaco, broadly that he wasn't driven enough.

Also a situation with Jardim where Martial was subbed on and 20 minutes later subbed off due to a lack of influence in the game.

When I think of our current front three of Rashford, James & Martial....a BIG if, but if we were to sign Haaland and Sancho, then surely Martial would be the odd man out...?

Who's going to pay him 200k a week elsewhere?

I think it all depends on Martial, doesn't it? If he performs well, and plays at his best, there's no reason he can't force his way into the starting lineup. But do I believe he's got that about him? Probably not, didn't see up for it when we signed Sanchez.

The player barely getting a full season chance as a centre forward and already has a video of someone questioning his quality & potential what he can become, the beard man is embarrassing.

Wait until end of the season then judge, there is no point to judge him now just because he had terrible game on the weekend but then again we are ignoring the fact that our midfield barely even pass the ball on target to our attackers in that game, can’t expect the attackers to do lot of things.

Ole himself has praised Martial about how good he is as a striker. The player has shown promising sign playing in the role this season, he has time to improve, Ole rebuilding squad plan is also improving players. Ole himself is also a former striker at United, can’t suit a better man than our previous managers who can improve him.

Well if Martial isn't good enough for United then i'm afraid nobody is in this team.

Right okay, balls out of the bathtub. Deep breath....

I don't see this 'class' in Anthony Martial and never have. He is a good forward but for me, I cannot see this world-class potential some do. He is never going to score you 20+ goals in the league because he spend 50% of league games not turning up whatsoever. I also don't see him thriving in a different team because, quite simply, I don't think he's that good.

I don't want us to sell him because we have much bigger problems, and on his day he contributes but his day is about 12 games a season and ALWAYS HAS BEEN since he arrived 4-5 years ago.

He goes missing for large parts of the game, but when he is at it , it's world class . The problem is , we as a team are not in a position to afford this luxury to him , since we are too dependent(along with Rashford as there is no midfield goal threat) on him for goals.

At this point I'd rather have someone who isn't technically as good or doesn't have supposed world class potential (he'll never be world class), but gives his all every week, who'd probably contribute just as much if not more, I think we need that more than a patchy performer like Martial.

I think we should see how this season plays out. I don’t think we can say what he is really like as a striker for us yet. He’s played less than 10 league games this season up front. He’s one of the players where the willingness to write him off never seems too far away.

This.

Can't see him fulfilling his potential sadly. He's great at home against average teams but give him a real challenge and he seems to flinch. Doesn't seem brave enough to be a top striker.

If he wants to go, he can go.

Martials premier league stats:

Appearances121Goals37Assists20

random other average rated striker stats: i promise i picked a random striker, not at a top 6 club ( to make a point - so there was some bias there)

Appearances139Goals37Assists18 (Troy Deeney)

and another random one:

Appearances104Goals38Assists11 (Callum Wilson)

would either of them be described as World Class or having world class potential? and yet their output over the last 5 years matches that of our Antony.

He is talented, very talented I say - brilliant techniques, fast, strong and intelligent . Major Issues with him are his injuries and at times he looked not bothered at all. It s if he really doesn't enjoy football anymore.

I absolutely love him when he plays deeper as a CAM false 9 type player. Whether that's due to his mentality or not - he & players like Rashford have hardly had managers and players around them to even get up a level of consistency.

He isn't ever going to be a Rooney or Ronaldo player for United & I've settled my mind up about that along time ago.

Yet this guy is as good as Nani was & Nani played with some of United's best ever players.

Martial is the best creator of chances in our team in the final third & no one can convince me otherwise. If Haaland comes & Martial moves back behind him then things will become fluid like what we saw vs Sheffield.

DT is fair in his assessment of Martial (its far from a hatchet job), saying that he drifts between a 6 and 8 rating but never looks enthusiastic. Recognizes that he has the skills to succeed but questions if he has the drive to push on and consistently give 9/10 performances that the ballon d'or type players do.

Some of the stories mentioned:

Ranieri (who is not known for calling players out) calling out Martial's lack of application while at Monaco
One story about coming on as a sub on 60 mins at Monaco and being subbed off 20 mins later having done nothing
Another about missing a match (away against Norwich 3 years ago) due to a supposed injury but being fine the following Monday for training, resulting in one of the senior players being disgusted and saying Martial 'didn't fancy it'

I find some of the criticism bizarre, this season when all the front three are there they’re a huge threat.

That said, he needs to consistently work hard.

Guy is playing well now, what’s the need for this?

even in the Sheffield game he was directly involved in 2 of our goals

That's nearly 20 appearances less, almost a seasons worth of opportunity considering he has hardly played centrally too. Not too bad.

To be fair Martial has played largely on the left and I’d also like to know how many of those appearances were full games he’s made a lot of sub appearances etc.

I don't get how can anyone set down to watch a 1 hour video. There are more precious things to do in your life during that hour.
