He doesn’t get the same level of adulation and trust at international level. Probably why
He's said it many times.
I think he still feels he's in an audition, anytime he plays for Spain.

Happy Karius Day David !

Seriously though, it's a crying shame that the last 5 years which were probably the worst couple of seasons in the last 25 years of our history have coincided with this guy's best period so far where he turned into a complete beast. He should've won much more now and get the praise and recognition he deserves. Hopefully, he will stay for life and be an important part of a title winning team (in PL & CL) in the near future. He deserves that.
A bit like Van nistelrooy.

He's bang average for Spain. He dropped several clangers at Euro 2016, one against Argentina, and another one yesterday.

Romero is better on the international stage than he is.

Until he actually starts delivering for Spain, he will never be anywhere near Casillas.
Absolute drivel, a goalkeeper is allowed the occasional mistake every year. Several clangers? Wow, please list these 4-5 direct mistakes leading to goals then, seems like you have a lot of material? Who cares if he makes a mistake in a meaningless game against Switzerland in a game where they change over half the team during the game.

Romero is better on the international scene? Not a single manager would pick Romero over de Gea. Furthermore, de Gea is better than Casillas ever was - he is the first name on that sheet for Spain and is th best keeper in the world.

Casillas is the most overrated keeper ever. He is backup for Porto now for a reason.

Euro 2016 against Croatia. Looked very shaky in the entire game and made several mistakes. Spain lost that match and ended up on the much harder side of the knockout competition. A draw would have been enough for top spot in the group.

Ramos, Busquets, Iniesta, Silva, and Isco are all more important than him.

De Gea is a phenomenal keeper, at club level. At international level, he has a lot to prove.

He was fantastic in the Italy game in the 2nd round though. Did some of the saves you see from him in a United shirt.

The opposite is true for Navas I believe. For Costa Rica, he's a legend. For Real, he's very good and gives his all despite not being the most talented club keeper in the world a la DDG. DDG needs the exposure and repetition as Spain's #1 in the high profile tournaments like Iker before him. Maybe Spain played Iker 2 years too far and could have given the #1 to DDG earlier, but now it's his time and he will (hopefully) continue to run with it and claim it for the next couple of World Cup cycles.

Against Sunderland second leg of the league cup semi final in 2013....

... under Moyes.

Poor by de Gea but he’s a strong minded guy, he’ll get over that.

He made a mistake against Argentina and Switzerland in friendlies just this year. He made multiple mistakes in Euro 2016.

He can't handle the pressure of playing for Spain.

Has a mental block with the national team it seems. I wonder if those horrible allegations before the last Euro’s has affected him.

Still yet to prove himself on the big stage
Seeing as the world cup and being #1 for Spain is his biggest stage for country, yes...hasn't proved himself. But on club level when United has played in Champions League, especially Fergie's last season against Real, he was phenomenal.

Pique and Ramos were also horrible at the Euros.

But yes Dave should be doing better
