It is a very good move for them. They needed another proven striker and he costs not much at all (if not for the clause, you'd pay 15m easily). With the service of Mata, Hazard etc, he will score plenty of goals

However, the amount of money they spent since Jan 11 is absolutely crazy. Some great players there, but just insane. It shows that continuinity and a solid management is still worth as much as millions for transfers

Right, time to bring out my old favourite. In late January 2011 Chelsea sat 10 points behind Manchester United in 4th place, and since then they've made the following transfers:

Demba Ba £7,000,000
Wallace £5,000,000

Marko Marin £6,500,000
Eden Hazard £32,000,000
Júnior Oscar Dos Santos £25,000,000
César Azpilicueta £7,000,000
Victor Moses £9,000,000

Thibaut Courtois £6,000,000
Oriol Romeu £4,350,000
Romelu Lukaku £20,000,000
Ulises Dávila Plascencia £1,750,000
Juan Mata £23,500,000
Raul Meireles £12,000,000
Gary Cahil £7,000,000
Kevin De Bruyne £6,700,000
Patrick Bamford £1,500,000

Fernando Torres £50,000,000
David Luiz £26,000,000

250 million pounds spent to bring them all the way to...14 points behind Manchester United, in 4th place.
Wtf. That's shocking from Chelsea - do you know what the net spend might be? I can't imagine it being too different...

Also, don't want to derail the thread but the Torres transfer is possibly even more of a farce than Andy Carroll's.

Did they really spend £20m on Lukaku? Providing Ba stays fit that's Lukaku kept out of the team for the next 3 years regardless of how he develops and you'd have to think by then he'll get a bit agitated and move to a Europa League side.

Personally, I think Chelsea only bought Lukaku, for all his talent, to stop other teams from buying him.

I was disappointed when he was going on and on before the move about how he'd only move to a club that would guarantee him first team football etc etc only to then go to Chelsea, where he'd obviously be a bench player at best (and indeed hasn't even been that). Silly move for him.

I think I read somewhere that since Ba came to the Premiership the only players who have outscored him are v.Persie and Rooney. I'm not sure how accurate that it, but if it's true that is very impressive.

Lukaku is a promising player, for his age, he's a monster physically.Once/If he improves other aspects of football he will be a similar player to Drogba, I think he just went to Chelsea a little too soon

The club is a farce isn't it?

They already have Lukaku on their books, who looks a great prospect, but they would sooner send him on loan and spend money on Ba.

Laughable.
What the hell? This is one of the least laughable transfers ever. Ba is a good proven PL striker who should do well, and we have him relatively cheap.

Torres was a laughable transfer, not Ba.

I don't like the idea of Ba being at the Chavs, he'll get plenty of service & won't squander so many of his chances like Torres does.

Mine you, Rafa will probably play Torres & leave Ba on the bench most of the time.

Would he have been better off at Arse?

Not if he wants silverware! Chelsea at least have a record of regularly winning trophies. I think Ba has made a good choice going to Chelsea, a very good set of players, who lack a bit of a finisher. Ba will certainly remedy that.

Yes a very good choice for him indeed. He just needs to continue getting on the end of chances and finishing like he did at Newcastle and the Chelsea fans will sing his name thunderously because thats all they ever wanted from Torres and he failed so miserably. It also wont hurt that on his day Ba can be a big physical unit to play against and he can sometimes hold the ball up like Drogba last season. You dont always get it with Ba, sometimes he's a bit quiet in that aspect and just pops up to score. But I remember him doing it against us for West Ham, he put on a clinic of holdup play

There is nothing wrong in having three strikers on your books. Lukaku is still young. He needs to get his basics right and then he will score goals automatically. He is still learning and Ba might be a good model for him.

Team need more than two forwards. For my money Torres won't last long and Lukaku looks to have a bright future. Ba has also played from the left.

Lukaku is on loan and plying regularly in the PL so not that bad a move. He could be a regular for Chelsea in my eyes, especially if he keeps improving.

I had no idea he had gone to chelsea before i saw his name on the score sheets. And at that price he should count as a top ten bargain. I wonder if Cabaye and Cisse will be the next ones out.

There seems to be something wrong with owners/agents heads when Torres goes for about 3 and a half times as much as Ba and Hernandez combined.
