Diogo Dalot | Done Deal | Speaks better English than Valencia

Tbf to him, I remember watching him against England a few years ago in a friendly and he looked brilliant against us.
That wasn't him, it must have been a different guy.

Rampaged up and down the wing all match, put in a few beautiful crosses and setup Balotelli's goal.

I remember thinking this guys a unit with great stamina, looks a player!.

I can't understand how he's been so utterly useless with us, really strange how far he fell.

I hope to see this again soon

Paying above a release clause...yeah no.

Let's get it done before other clubs start batting their eyelashes

I think it has to do with the tax issues that would accompany triggering such a clause - the total package of paying more than the clause now would be overall cheaper. Unless I misread something a day or two back.

United doesn’t have to deal with the hassle of the clause, and Porto receives a few extra quid for their troubles.

If Sandro stays at Juve, Mourinho might want to sign their LB Telles. Best to be on good terms with a team that does develop a lot of good players.

Keep Porto and the player sweet by paying more than the clause (which will still be a really low figure) which keeps things respectful with Porto and if we go back to do business with them in the future, they'll be willing to listen.

Not sure about your logic here.

Porto would more than likely take advantage of United's generous nature in any future deals between the clubs. Basically they will see us coming.

True, Telles is really good from what I've seen
He may not be as complete a player as Sandro, but he can be as he is still young and looks like he has all the tools.

Hmm I like Telles too, but I think he is only 2 year younger than Sandro? He is 25 going to 26 soon.

Why would we pay more than the clause?
Payment structure. Triggering a release clause typically requires the entire payment to be made immediately as opposed to staggering the payments over a longer period. Also, some of the "extra" fee will likely be performance related and even if the triggers are easily reachable the payments are in the future and easier on cash flow.

The only thing I say to you and the other posters here is I see him based on potential with 19 years as the best right fullback we have in Portugal, compared with Cancelo, Semedo, Ricardo Pereira, Cedric, Abel Xavier in the past or others.

Of course that doesn't mean nothing based on the present context. And the present context is Manchester United, a even bigger pressure on him to perform, improve and to show his potential isn't based on the fact he played 7 or 8 games for the first team, but on what he has done mainly at UEFA Youth Tournaments, Under 20 WC and Uefa Youth Leagues.

And I say right because he only played on the left side as a short term fix. If this was 10 years ago with Ferguson and Queiroz guiding him I would be more or less relaxed. Now in 2018 under Mourinho I will reserve my judgement.

The only thing I say is don't compare him with Bebe, this kid won the under 17's with Portugal in 2016, was present on 2 UEFA under 19's in 2016 and 2017, and a Under 20 WC on the same year, and possibly 2 years competing on the Uefa Youth League, only didn't played on the last stages this year vs Chelsea because he already played for Porto first team.

Last but not least I think he also played for the Porto B teams who won the under 23's Premier League International Cup.

He is rated by international scouts for what he has been doing in this type of contexts not what he did for 7 or 8 games in Porto first team.

Possibly United anticipated the fact he had 1 year left on his contract and signed him before he renewed and Porto raised the release clause.

A signing for the future. ;)

Goodness me, Mourinho has fallen so low.
You are not confident the legendary Jose Mourinho can make a proper right back out of that kid?

Oh wow, didn't realise he was 25!
But if Sandro renews, I think Telles would be the next best option.

Perhaps its dependant on position. Good youngsters where we dont need immediate improvement and instant performers for positions that have handicapped us in the previous season.

Doesnt that make sense?

Of course, but that is subjective. I think the LW position needed instant improvements. Rashford and Martial are great young players but can go missing for 5-10 games. So I think Sanchez was essential.

Matic, essential. Lukaku, younger, but still in his prime, essential.

Are you insinuating that we've made peak signings that aren't needed?

Valencia, whilst past his best and declining, still gives us 6/10 performances every week. Rumour also has it we were in for Bellerin, who's more like 23-24 and a proven PL RB. I see no real issue with giving Valencia another 2 years with this supposed wonderkid learning his trade and sharing the position. I'd understand your concern if we were talking about Left back. Young will not hold down that position for 50-55 games next season. Substantial investment is needed in that position.

No, I'm saying people want to immediately address our fullbacks which were a problem last season. If Dalot can do that its great - and personally from the little I've seen I think he can. But I could be wrong and I can understand others wanting proven players coming in to make sure its sorted and we arent relying on people who cost us at the back

Is this signing Javier Ribalta's first move in the transfer market, or is it purely down to Mourinho?

Mourinho doesn't like U20 players, it doesn't look like Jose signing. Surely, it's Ribalta's signing, he has signed Coman 18, Dybala 21, Morata 21, Rugani 20, Pogba 19.

As far as I know, Rabita is after Embalo and Barella.

I think personally we had huge problems in CM and LB, moreso than Valencia putting in average performances.

The point I've been making however is that there are certain posters that will specifically criticize Mourinho for only being capable of buying ready-made stars and then either show no support for buying an exciting young prospect, or criticize him for doing so.

I'd agree that defensively Young was worse, while in attack he was more useful than Valencia. And considering Dalot played his first team football and had some good matches at leftback I think its possible thats where he first slots in

And while I agree with you that some posters will never be happy, I think a decent amount of them complain because of what I suggested - wanting different things in different positions. Immediate improvement at fullback, CM and RW and as long as some of them are coming in they'll probably be happy with some long term projects in the squad too

So are you saying our scout has signing privileges and these can actually overrule the manager’s opinion?

So it's June 1st today and the clause is active from today if I'm not wrong.
If that's the case, why aren't we just activating the clause and finalizing the transfer?
Or are we trying to pay it in installments rather than the whole amount upfront?
Or are we negotiating for some of their other players like Telles?

You're a month early.
