Rochdale's defenders are bricking it every time Spurs get near their box. Spurs should win this pretty comfortably.

Question regarding the penalty, should the kick not be retaken and not disallowed?

VAR is a joke in its current state. Firstly it was stated in the rules that it's supposed to overrule clear errors. Why is it being used in every single case then?
As part of the trial they're apparently using it all the time to be sure. Was the case in Liverpool v West Brom too.

Scandalous they're trialling this nonsense in this competition without streamlining it or laying down some simple facts. Pisses me off they used it in our game first and we went out, not entirely because of it, that was our own doing too but it just ruined the flow of the game. Then after it was the Mata offside and now this, it's just so amateurish and doesn't bode well to helping improve the game if this is how it works.

Welcome to Manchester reception committee
The laws of the game explain the penalty issue as:
"A player who deliberately stops at the end of their run and then feints to gain an advantage is deliberately breaking the Law. This is an act of deliberate unsporting behaviour so, as well as the caution (YC), the player does not deserve to have a second chance to score. This stronger punishment should deter an offence which is sometimes difficult to detect."

I'd have to see it again, but I must admit I thought he paused mid-runup not at the end. Maybe that's why the ref asked for the VAR.

Shambolic refereeing, it's almost worth watching to see what VAR will give us next

He was close enough after the pause to kick the ball near enough. Goalkeeper edged to his right so Son kicked to the goalkeeper's left.

Thanks for that, good info.

He came to a complete stop. Good decision IMO

I wonder what people in the stadium are thinking, how confusing this all must be for them.

Disallowed because he stopped his run.

If he hadn’t stopped and scored, it should of been retaken anyway. So many were in the box.

This VAR system is a joke.nobody knows what’s going on with it.if it does come in permanent screens will need to come in across all grounds so supporters realize what is going on.

If they did like rugby where you can here the refs talking to each other, then it would be better.

Spurs have all their big guns on the bench I think. Can't imagine them losing.

Playing this high line shit is dangerous.
Jose would have picked this team off. Spurs trying to play football Rochdale not having any of it

Is it? The first decision was debatable. The resulting decisions have been spot on.
They have been spot on apart from the penalty decision really. the downside is the time it takes to check for a decision, they should find a way to make the process more fluid.

It's the length of time to make a decision that's the massive issue. If a clear decision to overturn hasn't been made in 30 seconds then the original decision should stand.

Well, that's why they are trialing I suppose. Expect it would be much faster when fully implemented.
EDIT:
If fully implemented! Probably lotta nasty words about it these days.

That was the most bizarre half of football I've ever seen.

A perfectly good goal from Lamela over-turned by VAR, a penalty scored by Son that - at worst - should have re-taken due to encroachment.

And the players kept standing around in freezing conditions for many minutes from endless VAR reviews.

It's hilarious.

Seriously though, not one single blip has occurred with VAR that someone with an above double digit IQ could have imagined as a potential sticking point before it was ever introduced. Men getting massive, throbbing hardons at the thought of a new toy and everything was rushed on that basis. Disgrace something this untested with that many flaws is even let loose on the game, especially in the FA Cup

I thought VAR was to help cut down on the talking points in the game? It is creating more.

Ronaldo and Balotelli literally do it all the time!
Balotelli doesn't make a complete stop in his runups. There's a difference. He slows down a split second before he kicks to see where the goalkeeper moves before going the other side. Son made a complete stop and then took his shot. Pogba also had one disallowed in a youth game back in 2011 vs Liverpool at Anfield for the same reason. When Ronaldo used to do it I believe the rules hadn't been changed yet.
