I’m not going all in defending Fred today. He was shite but please ole for the love of god stop playing him with Matic. All the space Matic vacates leaves him way too much to do and he nearly always looks terrible. With McT at least they’ve some kind of synergy and they dominate their opposite numbers. With Matic we take ten steps back and let them play.
Agree.

He helps us with the quick passing to initiate counters.

This can be seen at what happened when he went off.

Matic was the player that should have come off- not Fred.

Matic and Fred has no ying yang type of cohesion. Mctominays ability to go on runs with the ball is much better balanced with what Fred likes to do.

Agree.

Fred was missing his co partner McTominay today. Matic plays so much deeper and leaves Fred roaming and covering a lot of ground alone further up the pitch. Matic was a third defender at times.

United doesn't need a "specialist defensive midfielder" as certain influencers keep spouting for the 4231. United need proper box to box midfielders for the pivot. Players with energy, tenacity and all-round skill set. Players like Modric.

Unlucky with the goal that we conceded. Passing not that great today, some stupid passes near the edge of their box to players who were almost certain to be offside.

Of course they are. You don't win the league with those two as your main CMs. Heck, it's bloody hard to see truly challenging with that being the case.
They're not perfect but in the 37 games they have started next to each other, they've lost 6. That's not bad on it's own but includes a time when we were shite as a team. Last season they played 21 and lost 2. That's the kind of record City's midfielders have.

It's when we play others in there that it all goes wrong.

He was very bad in the first half. He improved in the second half and we looked a lot worse when he went off. The urgency was lost. Matic was more of a problem. We would have been better with a McFred midfield.

We were much worse when he came off. The game completely turned. He was shite but he’s still our most important midfielder when it comes to setting a tempo and winning the midfield battle, one way or another. Can or should we upgrade on him? Go for it by all means but Matic should be first on the chopping block. Nothing performance after nothing performance. At least Fred stands up to be counted, good and bad. Matic is invisible and has been for years now.

Ok cool but then imagine Rice and Matic in midfield there today. How would it have been any better? Another 60 million and still not winning the midfield battle. Things didn’t improve when Pogba went back either in fact it got worse

It's telling that people over the last year keep shitting on McTominay and Matic in these threads to defend Fred's dire performances. When you boil it down beyond physical attributes like energy, workrate etc there's not much to Fred's game if we're being honest. And other players having poor performances also doesn't excuse Fred's awful performances.

It's also poor form in my opinion to use this thread to continually comment on Matics performance when he has his own thread for that. If you can't say anything good about Fred's performance and you are hesitant to say anything bad about his performance. Then considering the purpose of the thread what's the point?

You literally tagged a post where I said he was shite? I’m not defending him today. I’m talking about our midfield options in their actual regular context. I don’t see what’s wrong with comparing what works with what doesn’t in a thread about one of our starting midfielders.

His passing is so erratic, he played some decent balls including one that created a chance for Mason, but there were so many sloppy passes as well.

No way is this guy from Brazil, it must be a mistake & he’s actually from Bristol. No Brazilian has a touch like that.

I know there is a significant portion of the cafe which this Fred is a misunderstood genius. But I just don't think he is good enough at the top level of the game

We have to bring an other player in for Fred`s position. Fred and Matic are simply not good enough, and we only have one player, who is good enough - McTominay.

He didn't had a good game but was left all alone by Matic who seemed to be scared of leaving our own box. He's not a great passer and didn't had options, it's like we play to our weaknesses tonight.

Gash in the first half. Just like he was against Leeds. And in almost every game he plays.

Much better after half time. We had 73% possession until he was subbed off. Which dropped to 40% for the next 10 minutes. Nobody will convince me that was a coincidence. The McT sub completely robbed is off the initiative and let Southampton back into the game. So frustrating.

Agree. Fred always appears to need a half before he gets going, but that said it's arguable that the whole team last season was the same.

If he was playing for Southampton nobody would want us to sign him, and we'd be wanting our midfielders to press him the minute he got the ball. He works hard, and presses well. He's got a engine on him. But far too often he looks like a competition winner with the ball at his feet.

Harsh.

He had a dodgy first half but was much better in the second, same as last week. And he never hides, and he was not helped by Matic dropping back far too much and not having the energy to chase.

In all, he is far from perfect and of course needs to keep his passing simpler, but is a good player for us.

Also agree, it seemed obvious to me that Matic was the one to take off

He’s such a weird dude. Like today passing was terrible at times, the. He’d thread one nicely. Have a poor touch, then he’ll pluck one out the sky under preasure like he was Berbatov. You just never know what you’re going to get with him.
I have no idea what to make of his performance today as it was equally terrible and decent at times. Which is often the way of the Fred.

Matic left him so isolated. Against a team who pressed also. Would have been better playing him alongside Donny or dropping Pogba back into midfield if Scott wasn’t fit

He's the energy in our midfield, simple as that.

He wins 68% more tackles and completes 28% more successful presses (i.e. pressing and winning the ball) than the 2nd best midfielder in the club. The moment he steps off the pitch, no one else can compensate for that energy. In fact the second closest is Fernandes; not McTominay, nor Matic, nor Pogba.

Even in the games where his passing is off or he's a bit more careless on the ball than usual, he still brings something none of the others can.

As bad as Fred was matic dropping in defense kills us everytime and its criminal ole does nothing about it.
I don't even think he was bad. He was a mixed bag as always and he was actually playing well when he got subbed. And that to leave on the pitch a man that looked positionally and athletically helpless.

It was a tale of two halves. Shocking in the first and was decent in the second.

Was shite but created a header that Greenwood should have scored.....
That was actually a really good pass, and on his right foot too. Watching him and Matic in our own half was just tragic though, I don't think the pair of them strung two passes together all game.

In the nicest way possible I can't wait for the day Fred leaves the club.

I mean no disrespect to him but I really do not enjoy watching him play football.

To me he is absolutely tragic.

Also this is a common type of game for him. Second half of last season he was doing this once in every 3-4 games.

He is an engine and not much more. He does the ugly stuff very well but technically, he is no better than average which is disappointing for such a financial outlay. His passing and shooting accuracy is just poor for a premier league midfielder. That being said today, once he went off with 20 minutes to go, we effectively lost any semblance of shape we had in the middle of the pitch and therefore became passengers for the remainder of the game.
