I don't really like giving the #7 to someone unproven but I feel like someone like Garnacho would relish it.

He'll eventually get it if he stays long enough but it's season or two early for me. The pressure to perform every game will hinder his natural growth.

He can have 27 or 37 for now, or better yet, stick with 49.

Nonchalantly scoring the winner...
Not too soon. I believe in him.

He has the positive energy to wear the shirt. It’s the right call.

People understand how young and raw he is. It’s less pressure than signing a big name and giving it to them and expecting them to be Ronaldo / Beckham / Robson.

The giving it to Ronaldo comparison is an obvious one

And I prefer giving it to a young talent who’ll thrive on it. Garnacho is fearless

It suits him IMO

I was bothered. Now don’t really care. CR7 got it at 18 and a lot of people on here didn’t believe he would be what he became to be.

We aren’t getting Mbappe so someone has to have it.

Too soon, you keep the no.7 on hold for his next contract negotiation when United might want/need to sweeten the deal.

We make too much of a big deal about it.

It's a nice part of our history, and some of our greatest / most talented players have made that shirt more than just a shirt, but at the end of the day...it's just a number on a shirt.

Shirt.

Yes, he has the personality to wear it. I also predicted it in a post some time ago.

I think it matters. No idea whether it's a good idea or not, that requires knowledge of the kid's mindset well beyond that available to me, but I do reject the idea that this is unimportant. I think it will affect his confidence, for better or worse.

Would be much more interesting if he truly made the #49 his own. It could become an iconic number for someone to follow in his footsteps a decade or so from now.

Depends on the player and, based on what I've seen of Garnacho, he doesn't look remotely overawed by anything. I reckon he's one of those rare kids that would be inspired rather than burdened by it.

Too soon for him but dont see us signing any better candidate. Rashford/Bruno/Antony will want to keep their numbers. Rather Garnacho take it than the shirt stay vacant.

Any striker we bring in has to get the no.9 off Martial.

Would want him to start many more games than Sancho then. He’d wear it well in my opinion.

He’ll get the 19 with Varane getting the 4.

I have high hopes for the lad but number 7, no.

It's just a number. It doesn't define his character. He will be a success or failure with or without it.

I’d give it him. One of the best teenagers in world football for me.

Of the big guns. Cantona & Robson got it by default, Ronaldo got it as a relatively unknown teenager, only really Beckham has ‘earned’ it… don’t really see what the issue would be tbh

"Martial...He's isolated Skrtel here..."
If there's anyone that can deal with any sort of added pressure a number might bring it's Garnacho. He might be a superstar, or he might not make it here, but I have 0 doubt that either way it won't be because he couldn't handle the pressure or didn't have the right mentality. He truly doesn't care

Genuine question... if Ronaldo can come in from not doing much at Sporting and get the #7, not earning it in the slightest, why are people against, and think it's too soon, to pass it to our 18 year old academy prospect who showed what he can do last season, idolises Ronaldo, and has that confidence and swagger about him to carry the #7?

It's just a number, but to him I think it will mean a sure show of confidence that we have in him for our future.

Like I genuinely do not understand the pushback here.

Agreed, of course it matters at this club I find it a bit weird when fans say it shouldn’t or doesn’t, it’s iconic in our club’s history (Owen not included) now whether Garnacho can handle it, we’ll see.

I like the kid but giving the number to him now will be a fecking ridiculous move. Puts way too much and unnecessary pressure on him. Why, for God's sake ?

A part of me feels like it's too soon...and I'm probably still there. But I have to say that not only does he have the talent...he has been one of the few that has absolutely busted his a** on the pitch no matter what the circumstances were. For me, thats a big part of wearing the #7...

Some players would wilt under the pressure and expectations of the iconic number; others will thrive and raise their game to justify the choice! I trust ETH to know which way Garnacho will go and act accordingly

I don't get the pressure. It's a shirt number we're not asking him to rewire the electrics, let's calm down. If it's a show of confidence in him then so be it.

I'll rather the number is worn by a forward who is already the best performer over multiple seasons. This move is just a marketing gimmick to create a bigger Garnacho brand which could actually spur him to greatness (I don't think he lacks the self confidence though). Or it could create that feeling of "arrival". Something I feel ETH has been trying to ensure doesn't happen with the special treatment he's been getting.
Maybe they're convinced he'll take it the right way. We can only wait and see.

Bit too soon IMO, but then I'd say EtH wouldn't even consider it if he thought it would go to his head in anyway, and he knows the lad a lot better than me, so why the hell not.

If he gets the number it's because he wanted it, so it's not the club putting pressure on him.

Also any player who buckles under the pressure of wearing a number on their shirt has an incredibly weak mentality.

He's an 18 years old kid. He doesn't know what's better for him and he won't understand the pressure until he experiences it.

As for the 2nd sentence, it applies to established players and not an 18 years old player who only had one season in senior football under his belt.
