General Forum shutdown

Would it change anything if the general was made 'hidden' like the Newbie Forums where you had to be logged in/given access to be able to see it?

Well if they don't do Google Ads, your other forums would be unaffected. Alternately, if they do, it's possible that the traffic is much lighter than that of the Caf, so they go unnoticed.

I suppose, it's a bit worrying that Google have this power though.

A friend of mine had photographs of 'rude vegetables' on Facebook and Facebook took them down. Bum shaped tomatoes and all!

I've always said this should be the case anyway, if you're not a member in the mains you don't see it.

What about making the general ad-free and charging a small subscription fee?

It's the power of $$$. We're theoretically perfectly free to have as much porn as we like, but unless we're going to charge everyone ten quid a month to see it, Google won't support it with their ads.

I know, but I imagine half the internet's in the same position.

I don't see the general as expendable. It's like heroin, it's necessary for lots of drug addicts.

Call the new forum "The Celibate Zone."

Which in fairness is true and why so many beautiful ladies were posted.

The Paul Gascoigne Memorial Shrine Forum needs to be set up immediately.

I will never understand these sorts of decisions by advertisers. Surely people who look at soft porn and have explicit and vulgar conversations are just as worth advertising to as those that don't. It's not as if people visit this site in order to see the adverts and no-one who visits this site associates the content of the site with the advertisers here.

This sort of censorship is parallel to the big supermarket chains dictating what magazines have on their front covers, but has a considerably less understandable basis. As Twisted_Woody said: it is a very small step from censorship for this reason and censorship on the basis of political or religious opinion.

I fully understand that market forces dictate this but it is a very sad day when Google starts to censor the internet.

Anyway, good luck getting the ads back Niall. Someone I know ran a site, Google Adsense blocked it and they wouldn't change the decision.

this has happened to a lot of message boards recently.
