City have done the square root of feck all to be considered favourites by anyone but shrewd bookmakers taking easy money off believers.
Won't bother replying to all the drivel contained in your post, but this absolutely takes the prize. Yeah, bookmakers are taking easy money by putting the best odds on a team isn't really all that. And true football experts are not fooled by that. Yeah, that's the real reason behind it, that's how it works.

I'd laugh but it feels like bullying at this point sigh
Maybe. Part of the problem is that he puts up such a resilient front, and he's probably out lived off most of his detractors. I genuinely hope it makes him happy, the stuff he posts and the antagonising others. Because there seems little malice to @GlastonSpur. I find him one of those rare, off-kilter types that bring real value to a forum.

Not everyone has me wasting my time photoshopping and attempting to rewrite Beckett for them.

I've said all that is to be said in previous posts, no point repeating it obviously. But that bit about how bookies work is absolutely brilliant and needs to be highlighted. I mean, even if you wanted to make a point about people putting disproportionate amounts of bets on City hence skewing the odds, it doesn't make sense. If anything, it's the other teams that have huge cult followings of fans that possibly place some amount of irrational bets. It's not that huge of a factor anyway.

Perhaps. Or perhaps you could take on how City, a side who have done nothing in the CL, can be considered favourites over seasoned sides who fight for, y'know, the actual trophy every season.

Feel free to break that down. Or don't, as you've said all that you've got to say, apparently.

OK a prime example is Juventus of the 90's - almost universally agreed upon as the best team in Europe despite only winning the CL once in the entire decade. Still, they were the team to beat, and the team others did beat to win the Cup. Other teams were measured by performance against them (we came of age with/because of them, for instance and Ajax were all the more exalted because of beating them of all teams in the final of their incredible campaign.)
What? No. Juventus were seen as the this big european force by reaching 3 straight finals, starting by beating Ajax, as underdogs, after Ajax had in turn ended the run of the dominant team of the era(milan) the year before

But nobody thought juventus were the best in the world in '99. Or before the '96 final for that matter

Nobody on your side of the world? '96 through to '99, Juve were revered gods here!

Who do you believe was above them around that period?

There was a funny sequence in the mid 90s, where Barcelona, Ajax and then Juventus were hailed as all conquering teams that will dominate for a next decade or so. Each team lost its mythical status after loss in a final. Fickleness of football fans.

Why are you guys bullying Glaston, he's harmless leave him be.
I've never seen Glaston post anything that bad tbh. Maybe I haven't been here long enough to understand but the meme of Glaston as a Spurs punchbag has always seemed odd to me.

It seems like one of those mob theory things where a community prone to groupthink massively inflates the negative reputation of a target beyond all comparison to what they've actually done.

I think Milan was the more reverred team of the 90s

And yes knockout competitions including the CL should not be taken as the be-all of strength of a side. Spurs knocked out City. But in the last 7 meetings between Spurs and City.

City 5 wins. 1 draw last August(Jesus late winner disallowed) and 1 loss 1-0 to a Son late goal. It will be ridiculous to claim Spurs was anywhere close to City in strength but they knocked City out

Glaston has repeatedly denounced everything I've said, despite everything I've said being true about spurs.
He's unhealthily positive about the club he supports to the point of extremism.
He can give it, can he take it?

There are two ways to reduce variance in cup football results: on one side, split a 90 minutes game in, say, 3 x 30 minutes minigames (or sets like in tennis and volleyball); on the other side, make the cup a league or a superleague, even better with a regular season followed by playoffs (like in basketball, both NBA and Euroleague), much better with salary caps, etc. This would destroy football as the game we know, making it more similar to NFL but less prone to luck, flukes and single catastrophic events settling otherwise balanced battles.

Even as a self confessed @GlastonSpur fan it has to be said that he can be a bit of a maniac, prone to hubris and wild prediction. I hope there is still a line between playfully holding people to account for silly posts and angrily picking on someone because they said something mean about your football team.

Ah come on, what's with the drama now  ? @GlastonSpur is used to it, don't worry about him. He is the most obnoxious opposition fan on the Caf

In '96, Milan, and Ajax. They were huge underdogs in the final against Ajax. 96-98 sure enough. And they were the big bad wolf in CL during that period i guess(1996/97-1998/99)

In '99 they finished 8th in the league. They disintegrated with Lippi set to leave at the end of the season and the whole club kinda blew up until they sacked Lippi and replaced him. Admittedly they were a lot better once Ancelotti came in, still they finished 7th in the league. Even in CL, their whole thing was "well, they used to be good last 3 years...."

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, while Glaston is one of the most obtuse posters in Caf history in many ways, I think he talks a reasonable amount of sense – his failing is that he is unflinching on the positions he takes, hence he ends up looking like a tit at times.

On the subject of rival fans, whatever happened to @peterstorey? He was the original opposition WUM - Gooner at the time our rivalry with them was at its most inflamed

Pete was a quality poster who wummed openly. Glaston believes the shit he spouts and nowhere close to Pete as a FF poster.

Nope, Pete just left on his own and never came back.
Oh, my mistake. I seem to recall a lot of people complaining to mods back then about his banning because he was a great member of the community. I haven't got the best memory, admittedly!

Hopefully life is treating him well.

I get your point but I wouldn't talk about fickleness but instead about foolishness. I think that on this board we are all obsessed enough about football to know that teams do rarely stay hugely dominant for more than 3 years, particularly at continental level but you still see people make the 10 years claim, we do the same for players "he'll fix the position for 10 years". The reality is that almost all the teams that are dominant today, all the players that are the bees knees and all the current popular tactical approach won't be in three years, players/managers get older, other get more experienced and others fall off a cliff.

Not very high quality yet 3 of them were in a European final last season.

If anything the PL has caught up with La Liga with the rest of the teams being better. I reckon the middle of the PL (about 8th-15th) is stronger than it has ever been.
Spurs and Chelsea are probably the best two sides in England outside of the top two, and there are probably 5-6 teams at a minimum in Europe better than those two....and I think I'm being very generous limiting it to that number. Chelsea struggled against Valencia.

Last season in the CL was a freak really. Spurs and United could barely have complained if they went out in the group stage. United aren't better than PSG but beat them anyway. Spurs aren't better than City but beat them anyway. Athletico and Juve drew each other then Juve lost to Ajax. Liverpool are a good team but if you were picking the best two sides in the competition City are the only other English side even worthy of a mention.

The Europa League is the Europa League.

Looks like an extended holiday for @GlastonSpur!

Didn’t watch the Bayern game, but watching spurs today and they are completely shot. Good performance by Brighton, but this team have given up.

Glaston is a real person who was once doxxed on here.
Those were the days. Just imagine how arrogantly one must post that another person can immediately identify who the poster is. Out of millions of posters there Glaston was identified by an unconscious mind. Unbelievable. In all honesty, I still do not consider that incident to be doxxing. Glaston had revealed everything about himself by himself.

Nope back in 2002-2005 with the original ultra wum Davo or devilish writing his bizarre anecdotes about meetings with fergie, yorke and beckham (see classics thread) and more. THOSE were the days oh young one.

Absolutely not. He was a huge WUM. He would take you around in circles, shifting goalposts all the time in discussions.

I have been going to various forums for 15yrs. He is the first of only 2 people I've ever put on ignore. Couldn't tolerate his BS.

No he really is that bad. His daddy daddy want want post was probably the nadir but he spouts shite regularly and is a disingenuous debater. To his own detriment as when he does talk sense once a season he’s undermined his own credibility already so no one takes him seriously
