Had some time to reflect and.... nope, I still just don't think he's cut out for a top club, the first goal we conceded highlights exactly why.
He can see everything unfolding around him, from Everton building up through the middle to DCL being right on his shoulder. He even gives himself a headstart, yet all it takes for DCL to get all the way to the byline is a simple ball inside Maguire, who gets waltzed past like he's not there.
I think Solskjaer is doing a good job at steadily evolving the team in to one that plays their football higher up the pitch and recycles possession effectively - it hasn't worked out all the time but yesterday we showed that we can do it at a fairly high level.
Naturally, this means there will be times when your full backs and midfielders push higher up the pitch to suffocate teams, but in order for us to do this and not leak goals like a sieve, we HAVE to have centre backs that can cope with being exposed, we've all seen numerous times how easy it is to breeze past Maguire one on one.
Ultimately I think the 1st and 3rd goals were mostly De Gea's fault, he was gutless yesterday... however I the phase of play leading up to the 1st goal is one that I can see hurting us a good few more times this season. Maguire's not a bad player, but I just think that his inability to deal with being even slightly exposed will hurt us more and more as we continue to evolve as a team.
