There's absolutely no excuse for a club of our status and wealth to go into next season without a single one proven goal-scorer. Zero excuses, none, zilch. This is no way to introduce young players into the first team. First and foremost, it is unfair to ask of them to carry the team on their shoulders. They need experience around them so that we can afford them the opportunity to develop by taking risks and failing without compromising our whole season.
Sir Alex was all about nurturing young talents and he never went into a season without his front-line being sorted out. First, it was Hughes and McCLair, then Hughes-Cantona and Cole. After that, we had Cole & Yorke. In the mid 00's we signed RvN and Saha and shortly after the baton was passed onto Rooney-Ronaldo-Tevez with the former two having enjoyed the time to develop their game while Ruud was our main outlet. Then we got Berbatov and RvP for big amounts of cash. Ferguson could have gone with Welbeck but he chose to pay for one or two great seasons of RvP delivering the goods. In fact, Ferguson never hesitated to break the bank when it came to securing where the goals were going to come from.
If we assume that top-four is going to be decided on fine margins, then we need to make sure that we have players who will provide us with an edge when the going gets tough. Kane will certainly score goals which will earn Spurs points they probably will not deserve, Aubameyang and Lacazette have 35-40 goals between them to make sure that Arsenal will be near the top-four until next May. Chelsea are a mess but they aren't allowed to sign anyone either. The way i see it, we are putting a lot of faith in Martial & Rashford being the real deal this season. I just can't see them scoring 35-40 league goals between them (with no further additions until Thursday, that is). Hope i'm wrong though.
