Lisandro

right age, right attitude, incredible consistency, fluent in English and Spanish - and I'm inclined to having your Captain at the back where they can see/observe the whole pitch

Casemiro, Martinez longer term if no one else shows up.

Ideally though, it's a midfielder

  1. Casemiro
  2. Varane
  3. Lisandro Martinez
Are probably our top 3 in terms of "proper captain types" who deserve it based on what they've done, consistency, behavior on the pitch etc. Casemiro is basically Roy Keane so obviously he's #1. Varane is a bit too injury prone and Licha a bit too new but he's future captain.

Varane or Casemiro. They have tons of experience and a good head on their shoulders, and both are obviously well respected within the team.

We're not chosing a new captain in the middle of a season. Start with Rafa next season when Maguire leaves with Rashy VC.

Martinez
Casemiro
Varane

In order of preference. Vice captain pick from the above 3 whichever isn't made captain

I seem to recall Licha is fluent in English, sure his interview when he arrived was in English

Which would rule out Casemiro and Martinez? And also Varane?
Yep exactly. There's a reason the armband is on Bruno and generally speaking he's been fine as captain, obviously yesterday was a low point and he was at the heart of that but you don't make big calls on the back of one freak game. Sure he can be annoying at times but I don't see a better alternative in the current squad.

I agree with the above posts if we were to change, any of Varane, Martinez but probably Casemiro as he plays more often.

Varane's English is pretty decent. The bar isn't that high to be fair with the likes of Rooney successfully captaining in Enghland.

I very much doubt those leaks are true. Which clowns can even come up after yesterday and suggest something like that? There wasn’t a single player yesterday who should not be looking at themselves instead of pointing fingers at Bruno.

Still Bruno because:

1. He is always fit
2. He has the right attitude (last night was an anomaly)
3. He is one of our best players
4. He speaks English
5. He has been at the club for longer than all his "competitors" (except for DDG)
6. It pisses off the worst posters on RedCafe

Not every captain can be Keane.

Wasn’t it true that Valencia couldn’t speak English? He was the captain for a bit

I’d keep Bruno

Neville has really done him a dirty on commentary.

Varane would be my choice if he could stay fit.

The three outside of Bruno & Maguire is pretty obvious — Casemiro, Varane and Martinez. Varane is more of a calming influence (although he has some fire in him — watch him trying to make our players acknowledge the fans at Anfield straight after the game instead of immediately sneaking into the dressing room) while Casemiro and especially Martinez are extremely vocal and aggressive — it really depends on what type of captain do you prefer to have.

De Gea sometimes appears in these discussions due to the length of his stay but let's be honest, if he had any leadership qualities, he would've
  • been made a captain already
  • been able to organize his defense — if you can't deal with 4-5 players, how are you supposed to deal with the entire squad?
But let's be honest — Bruno will be a captain or one of vice-captains at worst, despite the understandable criticism. He's very vocal, his work-rate and attitude is spot on 95% of the time (him switching off against Liverpool really isn't something that he does regularly), he's always there and he's very popular in the squad.
