Not only this, but she is seeking property tax waiver for buildings painted blue and white.

This is total misuse of authority and even such a proposal should be illegal. Court or Central govt are as usual tongue tied on this.

She is totally insane.

Interesting situation developing in Maharashtra politics for assembly elections next month. It can turn out to be 4 horse race.

everyone is writing off MNS then? or will they tie up with BJP?
They have lost whatever early 'wave' (if one calls it that) they had last time during assembly elections. If BJP-SS break up, then in a way it is life line for MNS as they can try form alliance with BJP and may get revived. Right now, they don't have enough to get sizeable seats on their own.

Not so fast!

In a bid to capture votes from the extreme right of the political spectrum, the Hindu Rashtra Sena (HRS), has said it will step into Maharashtra’s electoral fray for the first time.

The radical Hindu outfit was responsible for inciting violent protests over controversial Facebook posts which culminated in the brutal murder of IT professional Mohsin Shaikh in June this year.

Announcing her candidacy from the sensitive Hadapsar seat in the coming Assembly elections, Rasika Desai, wife of jailed HRS chief Dhananjay Desai, said the party would soon publish its election agenda from Mumbai.

The party will have the conch as its symbol and field around 30 candidates from various constituencies in Ahmednagar, Jalgaon, Aurangabad, Kolhapur, Thane and Mumbai, she said.

Following the HRS announcement, the right-wing Muslim party, the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul-Muslimeen said it would field 30 candidates in the State to match the HRS.

I wouldn't be surprised if they managed to incite riots to further there own cause.

'Major US operation to oust Hasina'

Indian intelligence officials say they have unravelled a US-funded move to topple Sheikh Hasina's government in Bangladesh and ‘weaken’ the Left regime in Tripura.

West Beng al's ruling party Trinamool Congress, which is said to have been hugely funded by the US in its oust-Left drive in West Bengal between 2009-2011, has transferred millions of dollars to its fundamentalist associates in Bangladesh, they claim.

A central intelligence report accessed by a bdnews24.com correspondent in India says Trinamool MP in Rajya Sabha Ahmed Hassan Imran and another Maulana Asif Khan (originally from Teknaf) have been sending huge amounts of money to the Jamaat-e-Islami and BNP over the past six months.

"The whole idea is to foment unrest on a large scale that would involve killing of Awami League leaders and activists and public disorder," said a top central intelligence official.

The BNP and Jamaat leaders have been meting out those threats and pushing for a fresh election, almost in tandem with the US.

Pakistani agencies are also involved, the source claims.

The officials say Trinamool MP Moon Moon Sen has close contacts with Imran Khan who is now out to topple Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and a recent visit of the Pakistani high commissioner to Kolkata was arranged through the Imran-Moon Moon liaison.

A large team of Kolkata-based journalists was then taken to Pakistan after the Pakistani high commissioner met West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and sought her support to open a deputy high commission in Kolkata to facilitate Pakistani visas to Muslims in the city.

Indian intelligence officials are opposed to the proposal and somewhat amazed at the ‘bonhomie’ between the Pakistani diplomats and Mamata Banerjee who seems to be going out of her way to secure the Urdu-speaking Muslim vote.

The Bengali Muslims have largely voted for Congress and CPI(M) even in the 2014 parliament polls which the Trinamool swept in West Bengal.

Kolkata has a huge population of Urdu-speaking Muslims who usually support fundamentalists and take part in anti-Bangladesh tirades as witnessed in their rallies against the war crimes trials in Bangladesh, which has great support in West Bengal amongst Bengali Hindus and Muslims alike.

One source points out that a leading Indian editor belonging to this community, who has recently joined the BJP, is now in Dhaka to 'liaise' closely with the BNP.

One businessman from the community is helping him set up links between the BJP and the BNP. This businessman claims he works for RAW.

But many senior BJP leaders are upset at the activity of this editor and author because they say he is actually lobbying for the BNP in his own party circles.

"Prime Minister Modi is keen to deal with the present government but this Muslim editor-journalist seems to have taken it upon himself to forge strong BNP-BJP ties," said a top Bengal BJP leader.

The central intelligence report says that Ahmed Hassan Imran, who was nominated to Rajya Sabha by none other than Mamata Banerjee, was actually a senior office bearer of the now-banned Students Islamic Movement of India (SIMI).

It provides details of its links with Muslim terror outfits and how he has been moving funds across the border.

Imran was a correspondent of the Jamaat's mouthpiece Naya Diganta and enjoys close personal relations with leaders like Motiur Rahman Nizami, Delwar Hossain Sayedee and Mir Quasem Ali, all of whom are up in the dock on the war crimes trials.

Pakistan is strongly lobbying with other powerful Islamic countries like Saudi Arabia to force the Bangladesh government to stop the war crimes trials, say Indian intelligence officials.

Their report says that the US is backing the Jamaat-BNP combine because it has been promised a base in the Bay of Bengal in case they come to power, possibly in the Saint Martin’s Island.

According to these officials, senior US officials have been meeting BNP Senior Vice-Chairman Tarique Rahman now in exile in London.

The US is keen on this base to oversee the Chinese-developed port facility at Kyaukpyu in Myanmar's Rakhine province and the proposed Sonadia deep-sea port in Bangladesh.

The intelligence report says that the US is not only keen to bring down Sheikh Hasina government but also cripple the Left regime in Tripura with the ultimate purpose of ousting it in an operation akin to West Bengal in 2011.

from across the border..make of it what you will although it is no secret that India and usa are at odds over bangladesh as usa is backing the radical jamati and bnp to rule which obviously India doesn't want.

@VidaRed yes that report is more or less true and in sync with what is being reported in many WB newpapers too. It is creating a big scandal, especially as RAW are saying that money is going cross border for terrorist activities. TMC deny it and are backing the MP (who is ex-SIMI) saying that he is being victimized for being a Muslim

That money is from the Saradha scam, now estimated at around 10000 crores INR, and it is widely speculated that the money has gone to BD and Nepal about a year back. And yes the TMC is strongly backing the minority vote bank with sops e.g. cycles for Muslim schoolgirls, INR 5000 per month per imam, easier Haj visas, Mamata herself praying at dargahs during Ramzan etc

It is all so out-in-the-open yet they claim to be secular - and people are starting to get fed up. It is cringe aworthy to see to what length they can go to just for votes

And now that the BJP is entering WB politics in a big way, it has actually benefited Mamata as the minority vote is going to one party only - the TMC (instead of INC, LF and TMC earlier). That is what is letting them win the elections still - if one considers 27%+ minority votes in every seat, it is common sense to woo them

My wife did her research at ISRO in Trivandrum. It is amazing that they are able to achieve so much given the constraints in budgets and the bureaucracy they need to overcome for any small thing.

http://www.thehindu.com/news/nation...against-modi/article6448311.ece?homepage=true

Even before he touched down on U.S. soil after a nine-year visa ban, a federal court in New York has issued summons against the Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his role in presiding over the anti-Muslim pogrom in Gujarat during 2002 when he was Chief Minister of the state.

The lawsuit, filed by the American Justice Center (AJC), a non-profit human rights organisation identified among the plaintiffs “two survivors of the horrific and organised violence of Gujarat 2002”, and called for a response from Mr. Modi based on the Alien Tort Claims Act (ATCA) and the Torture Victim Protection Act (TVPA).

Gurpatwant Singh Pannun, whose law firm represents the plaintiffs, explained via email to The Hindu that the summons issued by the Federal Court of Southern District of New York requires Mr. Modi to respond within 21 days after it is served.

The summons document, which also alludes to the 21-day deadline, notes that if the Prime Minster fails to answer the attached complaint, “Judgement by default will be entered against you for the relief demanded in the complaint,” adding that Mr. Modi was expected to file his answer or motion with the court.

Specifically the twenty-eight page complaint filed was said to seek compensatory and punitive damages and “charges PM Modi with committing crimes against humanity, extra-judicial killings, torture and inflicting mental and physical trauma on the victims, mostly from the Muslim community”.

Mr. Pannun further noted that the “default judgement”, which in other cases has been entered against defendants in their absence, would be a “declaration from Federal Court that 2002 killing of Muslims was ‘Genocide’ as per US and international law”, and possibly grant compensatory and punitive damages for the riot victims.

According to a statement by the plaintiffs the ATCA, also known as Alien Tort Statute (ATS), is a U.S. federal law first adopted in 1789 that gives federal courts jurisdiction to hear lawsuits filed by U.S. residents for acts committed in violation of international law outside the US.

Commenting on the summons issued by the John Bradley, a Director at the AJC said, “The Tort Case against Prime Minister Modi is an unequivocal message to human rights abusers everywhere… Time and place and the trappings of power will not be an impediment to justice”.

The AJC is scheduled to hold press conference on September 26 to clarify the implications of the lawsuit filed in terms of the legal path ahead in the survivors’ quest for justice, according to a statement the organisation issued.
The same court that summoned Sonia.

http://www.dnaindia.com/india/report-cancer-drug-price-goes-up-from-rs-8000-to-rs-108-lakh-2022667

The Union government decision to decontrol prices of 108 drugs -- used to treat tuberculosis, AIDS, diabetes and heart ailments -- has jacked up their prices. In some cases, prices have seen an unbelievable rise.

The price of Glivec, an anti-cancer tablet, for example, has risen from Rs 8,500 to Rs 1.08 lakh.

Plavix, used to treat blood pressure and heart ailments, will cost Rs 1,615, against the earlier Rs 147. An anti-rabi injection, Kamrab, priced at Rs 2,670, will now cost Rs 7,000.

In a circular issued before Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to the US, the government asked the National Pharmaceutical Pricing Authority (NPPA), an autonomous body, to withdraw its May 2014 guidelines on drug price control.

NPPA had capped the prices of these 108 drugs, in addition to the already listed 800 essential drugs, to improve their affordability, in the wake of official figures that there are 4.1 crore diabetes, 4.7 crore coronary heart disease, 22 lakh TB, 11 lakh cancer and 25 lakh HIV/AIDS patients in the country.

Are drug companies behind the move?
Drug companies, no doubt, are happy. Their argument is that the 108 drugs mostly relate to lifestyle diseases and are not 'essential'. One drug company executive said pharma companies themselves have volunteered to keep prices of 800 essential drugs as low as possible. Also, he asks, "In a free market, how can a regulator control prices."

So now, will the prices of all 108 drugs go up?
No, say officials. "The government has only taken the powers of NPPA and kept them with it. The government will negotiate with pharma companies to keep prices low. The aim is to cut through red tapism," said a senior official in the ministry of chemicals and fertilisers.

Why did the govt do it, in the first place?
The government decided to empower itself to deal with the pricing of some limited and non-essential drugs. Instead of seeing this as a favour to pharmaceutical companies, it should be seen as an encouragement for them to invest and spend on R&Ds.

But surely some pharma firms might have benefitted?
Definitely. Subsequent to the new move, 0.7 per cent of the combined sales of Sun Pharma and Ranbaxy in India will be out of price control. The corresponding figures for Torrent and Lupin will be 1.5 per cent and 0.7 per cent, respectively. Soon after the government decision, share prices of pharma companies shot up. Sun Pharma and Ranbaxy gained nearly 2 per cent and GSK Pharma and Davis Lab gained 1 per cent each. Glenmark was also up around 1 per cent.

What's the anti-decontrol group saying?
Former Union minister for chemicals and fertilisers Srikant Jena alleges that the timing of decontrol smacks of a plot to help multinational pharmaceutical companies, mostly headquartered in the US, to earn bumper profits. He said the decision seems to have been taken to let Prime Minister Narendra Modi earn some brownie points while interacting with top US officials and company executives.

Weren't these drugs under price control regime earlier?
The Ministry of chemicals and fertilisers had, on May 30, 2013, delegated powers to the NPPA to regulate the prices of life-saving drugs. This resulted in a significant reduction in prices of a broad spectrum of drugs. The Modi government extended this regulation to even lifesaving drugs for cancer, HIV, tuberculosis, malaria, diabetes, cardiovascular diseases and asthma. The government later withdrew these guidelines, ahead of Modi's visit to the US.

It's very sad, about a year ago there was a Supreme Court judgement and a government that showed some spine on this (having made the original sin of agreeing the WTO deal in 2005)....

It's a very big concession (one that sells out our poorest and most vulnerable), what are we getting in return from the US corporates?

http://www.theguardian.com/world/2013/apr/01/novartis-denied-cancer-drug-patent-india

Glivec costs around £1,700 a month. Indian generic copies cost around £115

In an interview with before the ruling, Novartis threatened to stop supplying India with new medicines if it did not get the patent protection it believes its investment and innovation deserve. "If the situation stays as now, all improvements on an original compound are not protectable and such drugs would probably not be rolled out in India," Paul Herrling, who headed the company's legal battle in India, told the Financial Times. "Why would we?"
feck them. If they sold at anything like a reasonable price, this wouldn't be an issue.
I hope some generic manufacturer can add a methyl group or a side chain or something to their drug, claim that they have made a new drug, patent it and sell it here.

Found this article about the Bengal blasts while going through google news..

Makes a pretty grim read. Along with the ISIS flags being displayed by a couple of morons in Kashmir, I hope our anti terror agencies are able to foil these people. Still don't know why Mamata did a huge fuss before handing the case to the NIA. Derek O'Brien went as far as to blame all this as a BJP conspiracy yesterday, during a tv discussion.

For those of you who haven't heard about the blasts,

What really really gets under my skin is that all these incidents are treated as political in nature. Irrespective of what happens, the focus seems to be on opposition claiming they could have done better and not on what actually went wrong.

Current leadership or the party ?

if you mean the latter then it wouldn't be best for India, there is always a need for a national opposition in a democracy. Or would you prefer a coalition of regional parties running the country when people get pissed at the ruling govt and vote it out

I kinda agree, but the current 'congress' is nothing more than a shadow of it's history. It has been in mainstream due to alliances and coalition. I used to be a ardent supported during Rajiv days, but since then it has been a continuous downhill slide for them.

1) Enough of the Gandhi's. Sonia was at least street smart, but Rahul is a walking disaster. Enough with the dynasty politics.
2) Get someone with backbone to lead the party. Someone with force of character.
3) Stop alliances and coalition. They need to break out on their own, to see if they are a major force still. A good wake up defeat to get their core strength back.

Agra Muslim fear conversions to Hinduism

Nearly a dozen Indian Muslim families have fled their homes in Agra after 57 families were reportedly converted to Hinduism against their will.

Muslim organisations have accused Hindu nationalist groups, close to the governing BJP, of "forced conversions" and demanded action against them.

The Hindu groups have denied the charge and say the conversions were voluntary.

Meanwhile, opposition MPs have accused hardline Hindus of undermining India's unity and secular nature.

The issue has been hotly debated in parliament, with opposition parties demanding an explanation from Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Critics say Hindu hardline groups are flexing their muscles under the new Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government, led by Mr Modi.

Recently, a row broke out after government minister Niranjan Jyoti used an abusive term to refer to non-Hindus, by asking people at a public rally to choose between Ramzada (children of the Hindu God Ram) and Haramzada (bastards).

Mr Modi said he disapproved of her language but refused to sack her.

Analysis: Geeta Pandey, BBC News, Delhi
Religious conversions have been a topic of passionate debate in India for many years.

Hindu groups have often accused Christian missionaries and Muslims of converting poor, low-caste Dalits - formerly untouchables - and tribespeople with promises of a better life. In the past few years, Hindu hardline groups have started organising reconversion rituals they call "ghar vapasi" - which means "returning home".

The conversions - and re-conversions - in most cases allegedly involve force, fraud or inducement.

In Agra, it is alleged that local Hindus employed fraud (by not telling people they were going to be converted) and also offered inducement (by promising ration cards). The Hindu groups have denied the charges, saying the conversions were voluntary and that they intend to do many more.

It's barely six months since Narendra Modi led his BJP party to power and critics are already expressing fears over the future of religious minorities in the country. Mr Modi, who was accused of failing to stop deadly anti-Muslim riots in Gujarat in 2002 when he was chief minister, insists there is nothing to fear.

But his minister's remarks and the row over Agra's conversions mean many suspect his hardline supporters must be receiving quiet encouragement.

On Thursday, the residents of Vednagar slum in Agra told BBC Hindi's Salman Ravi that some 250 people had attended a havan (Hindu religious ceremony) on Monday.

Most residents of the slum are poor rag-pickers and many said they had been promised ration cards and other basic amenities by a local Hindu activist if they attended the event.

One slum resident, Salina, said she had no idea that it was a conversion ceremony. "During the ritual, suddenly we were made to do what the [Hindu] priest was doing. One Muslim man was even made to hold an idol in his hand.

"After the ritual was over, the local activist told us that we had all become Hindus. We wanted to protest, but we were advised to keep quiet as we were told we would get a ration card and other amenities."

Another resident Mumtaz, however, said that no-one had forced her to attend the ritual and that all those who attended had done so voluntarily.

Ramzan Sheikh, a witness to the ritual, said there was a lot of fear in the area. "We are scared. Whatever happened, we never expected," he said.

After receiving complaints from Muslims, police have registered a case against a Hindu activist who is accused of trying to convert Muslims by promising them food ration cards.

Police have also taken in for questioning a Muslim man supervises the rag-pickers in the slum and authorities have deployed armed policemen in the area as a precautionary measure.

Thought this warrants a thread since its beginning to go into hyperdrive.

Hope the world ends before I have to make a choice.

For non-Indians, just to give you a clue

In 2009, the elections involved an electorate of 714 million(larger than both EU and US elections combined. Declared expenditure has trebled since 1989 to almost $300 million, using more than one million electronic voting machines.
FFS, I read this OP under the impression the thread was titled 'Indian Electricians'
