Of course Schweinsteiger played as a holding midfielder. Probably not at his absolute peak (in the 2012/13 team that you're referencing, it was indeed Martinez who played in a more reserved defensive role), but his MotM performance in the 2014 World Cup final was one of the greatest defensive midfield performances of all-time.Schweinsteiger was b2b, with Javi Martinez being the holding midfielder.
He was never a holding mid, neither club nor country.
If you asked anyone outside of united fans who they would rather have out of carrick and Casemiro i don't think you'd get the same reaction. No, not even fit to shine Carricks boots never mind Makalele
I mean, Case scores at about the same rate Vieira did, and is often the one making runs into the box from our midfield....don't know where people get the idea he doesn't contribute to our attack...Vieira and Petit were the last of those at the top level I reckon.
Wouldn't say that he played as a holding midfielder, he was literally everywhere in that match.Of course Schweinsteiger played as a holding midfielder. I meant a partnership where you have two midfielders well rounded enough to contribute in roughly equal parts to defence and attack.I mean, Case scores at about the same rate Vieira did, and is often the one making runs into the box from our midfield....don't know where people get the idea he doesn't contribute to our attack...
It's really simple: would you rather have Vieira and Petit or Casemiro and De Bruyne?I meant a partnership where you have two midfielders well rounded enough to contribute in roughly equal parts to defence and attack.
Shortly after, makelele was fetishised for just being really good at one part of midfield tasks.
Bit unfair. De bruyne is better than Vieira and Casemeiro is better than Petit. It's really simple: would you rather have Vieira and Petit or Casemiro and De Bruyne?
Not really, but i digress. The point of a defensive specialist is that it allows you to play more attacking specialists at the same time.Bit unfair. De bruyne is better than Vieira and Casemeiro is better than Petit.
But something like Vieira and Souness vs de bruyne and Casemeiro would be a different proposition.
ludicrous there was even a debate. Is this even a debate anymore?
Is he going to be another Varane Mkii for Man Utd? or will he be a success like the Alaba transfer to Real Madrid. No one knows.Love that this thread is a thing, yet people are still debating if a 30 year old version of him is worth signing for us in our utter mess!
I think he has missed like 12 games through injury in the last 5 years. His body should at least hold up.Is he going to be another Varane Mkii for Man Utd? or will he be a success like the Alaba transfer to Real Madrid. No one knows.
Or could fall of a cliff like Hazard who was almost never injured before his transfer. Let’s pray not though.I think he has missed like 12 games through injury in the last 5 years. His body should at least hold up.
GravesonWho's that then?
He's coming into a club fielding McFred.Busquettes was twice the player. Casemiro at his peak would have been a benchwarmer at Barcelona for years.
