I tend to think that is why we're trying to sign James and looking at players like Godfrey this time round.

That said, Maddison looked fantastic last year in The Championship and only Leicester went for him.

All hindsight. I do admit our transfer policy over the last decade has been abysmal.

Strange that he won Leicester's young player of the season then. Ricardo won fans and players player of the season

His first touch looks brilliant from the clips.

First touch, dribbling, final pass, crossing and freekicks all very good. Basically everything you'd want in a 22 year old attacking midfielder. Scored 14 goals for Norwich the season before signing for Leicester so will probably improve on his 7 goals last season as well.

He chose Leicester to be near his family in Coventry.

Have to admit I heard a lot of hype during the season but didn't really catch many of Leicester's matches. Looks a really high quality talent based on the clips I have seen. Very very complete. Reckon he'd be an excellent addition if we get him. I have said that we need a proper playmaker but that can come from a 6 or 8 as well.

So he’s better than Ndidi and Tielemans? Is that what you are telling me? He’s not even the better fit for us.

Tielemans came in January and like when your keeper wins player of the season. I’d be really worried for Ndidi every got player of the season in a good team.

Ndidi only played DM for half the season, before that Mendy was sitting deep and Ndidi was playing the Tielemans role.

He is not worse than them, and you'd be better off playing the 'better fit for us' card.

Hard to argue this is not sensible, as much as I’d like to see Pogba excel beside quality signings, I’m just not convinced he has it in him to do it consistently or to not just try leave next year anyway

I think he is good but not good enough to replace Eriksen - at least not right now. I can't see us going for him.

I think his first season in the Prem was a success for him. We didn't really see him pulling out the party pieces like he did for Norwich in the Championship but his set pieces were exceptional and end product was generally good. I think he suffered a bit under the austere Puel and looked better once Rogers came in.

Now he knows the level and what's required you'd hope that he would kick on next season and perhaps be the more confidently expressive player he was at Norwich. Against City late on in the season there were certainly some hints of that.

At 22 he will grow into it.

He might, he might not. He is good and I quite like him but I'm not convinced he will develop into a really top player. Too much of a risk especially for the money it would take to get him - probably better value elsewhere.

You say that but I think Jones/Smalling where more 'middling' fee's at the time and we've probably had 400+ games out of them. Jones was very unlucky with injuries earlier on in his career especially and Smalling has been solid if unspectacular. Shaw has been far from a disaster and retains his value if we wanted to sell.

My point is, I would far rather us go for these kind of signings than your Falcao's, Sanchez's, Schweinsteigers, ADMs etc....I just think we need to identify more players at an earlier stage and move them on sooner if/when it doesn't work

I agree in the sense that I think Utd need to focus on young, hungry and talented players rather than looking to pay top dollar for 'big names'

You're not going to sign anyone as established as him. Players like Ndombele and Lo Celso aren't top class either.

I've thought for a long time that the progression of English players from the championship up now only really happens via promotion. Clubs seem happier to spend 50m on players from the Ukrainian league now than half that on players who've proved themselves in the championship. Jamie vardy is a perfect example. How can a player of his level have taken so long to make the break to top level football? It's not good for the domestic game at all.

No but I think they have more quality than Maddison - well Ndombele certainly does from what I have seen of him.

Jones was a lot at the time. £20m or so. I didn't say Smalling was a lot.

I rate Shaw but he was very expensive, and there's no way he'd retain his value if we sold him factoring in the ridiculous inflation in the market. £30m in 2014 is at least £50m now.

There is a bit of an anti-British theme on these forums from some posters. It is like because British players have failed before that means all must fail and all must be overpriced.

There are far more overpriced and overrated foreign players than there have ever been British, so I have never understood why this gets regurgitated. The higher prices are about Premier League experience, not the player being British.

You only have to look at the top signings between English clubs to see that 16 of the top 24 were foreign.

Anyway, I don't see how Maddison at £60m is seen as outrageous (supposedly, only being priced at that because he is English), but Felix at £100m is acceptable. That makes absolutely no sense. You are saying he is worth at least £40m more than the top chance creator in the Premier League in 2018/19.

I think if he stays at Leicester he'll be worth way more next season, think Rogers will get him really playing, he was excellent against City when we scraped the 1-0 and whenever I see him he looks impressive, always targeting the defenders and getting them turning and has a good pass and is decent at set pieces.

7 goals and 7 assists in his first season in the PL is an excellent return.

Creativity wise English talent rarely match up to other European and Brazilian players given the price.

I don't agree with that. England have had a lot of creative players. It is only recently that there has been a drought of English talent, which happened to coincide with the drop in quality of the Premier League.

After the period of Lampard, Gerrard, Rooney etc. England did lack talent, but that is a very short period that England is now coming out of. We now have Sterling, Sancho, Arnold.

I just think its nonsense to regurgitate the same argument, which seems to mostly be coming from that one weak period.

I rate Felix from Benfica over Maddison. Felix has everything as a free nr.10. Felix football vision, decision making and his skills is just amazing. A top notch. A thinner and smaller version of Zlatan and remind me a bit of Kaka too. The negative of Felix is his price and buy out clause. If Felix keep working hard and things goes his way, then the natural progress is the top level of the current international level...where he is close to reach it.

Again, if i can choose beetween Felix and Maddison. Only as a football player. Not about the price tag. It would be a easy choice. And Felix is a better finisher too. Felix the way he drive and run with the ball remind me more of Kaka and Zlatan than Maddison. Growing older and Felix will be stronger. He is a bit skinny now. But why so skinny and easy on the toes. The boy is so quick and fast in his head and feets. He is making up the decision in the head really fast. One, two touches combination football and he can dribble and passes players too. Again, Felix has everything as a classical free nr.10. 3 years younger than Maddison, but from mine observing already on or above.

I'd be up for this signing if we didn't already have Angel Gomez coming up. and i also think his is the reason why we are trying to renew Mata's contract.

That vid is a bit of Becks, Scholes and Giggs all in one. I know he isn’t at that level, just to be clear.

Yeah he has some of Beckham's technique in his shooting and crossing at times and also some of the outside of the right foot touches

These transfer links are worrying me. I have no idea how good these guys are, but clearly Solskjaer saw the CO92 come through and he's trying to recreate that core of young and hungry British players, and because our academy is rubbish we're buying them in instead. If it works then great, but if not we're stuck with a bunch of Championship players. If we're prioritising these signings over more established names we're putting all our eggs in one basket and could be in huge trouble if it goes wrong.

Maddison actually looks a talent from the video posted above, but he wont be getting the time to do all those turns and tricks in a team like ours. Be interesting to see how he responds once settled into the league.
