So hang on, was that it?

AN offside where the player was level and bloking the view of the defender to the linesman, and a debatable penalty where it took about three replays to even establish what had happened?

Sunderland didn't score directly from a free kick. The ball was cleared, he should have blown the whistle.

I know a minimum time is announced, but the problem is that it isn't applied properly. Because I'm an extremely sad individual, I watched your game against Liverpool the very next day. You were 3-2 up, and deserved your win, fine. But Liverpool were pressing forward at the end, and Webb blew his whistle at 94.00 precisely. There were stoppages of at least fifty seconds in length during injury time.

Fair enough, he blows it on time. It's the old consistency issue though - why didn't Dowd, and why did Webb?
I agree it's incredibly inconsistent, and it's actually one of my pet peeves is incorrect added time, it really annoys me when refs blow up exactly on time ignoring stoppages since they've announced the added time.

Interestingly, I've just noticed on Match of the Day that the commentator said that there was 5 seconds of added time left, shortly after which Arsenal got a corner. The ball was half-cleared from the corner, Arsenal crossed and Koscielny headed wide. Given the amount of time that elapsed, I reckon if Koscielny scored it would have been significantly after 94:14. Swings and roundabouts.

Yes, and at the SoL they were completely robbed of 2 points because a goal was scored at 94:14 after the award of a minimum of 4 minutes of stoppage time.

And Phil Dowd is to blame for drawing 4-4 after leading 4-1.

Miracle retards.

I wish I hadn't mentioned that SoL match now.

Song deserved to go, he was kicking people all match.
That's just bollocks, he was pulled up for 4 fouls in total - none of them in the least violent. The last one wasn't even a foul, the Sunderland player dived since he was losing possession. 2 yellows for 3 nothing fouls basically.

Still, as has been mentioned, if Rosicky hadn't skied his penalty....

By the way, anyone surprised at the lack of mention of Birmingham's penalty that never was at Wembley due to a bad offside call? Only mention it because Szecezny would have been sent off and suspended for a couple of games. That could have been a big factor today.

The Guardian:

Song more or less had to go, having been treated leniently on a couple of earlier occasions in addition to a first-half caution for a foul on Henderson.
Telegraph:

Irony of ironies for Arsenal as Alex Song sees red for a second yellow. Malbranque eased past the midfielder and Song couldn't resist taking him out. He can have no complaints about that one really. Dull-minded play.
Mirror:

Song, who had been cautioned for a foul on Henderson before the break, picked up a second booking for a challenge on Malbranque and was dismissed

I'm not entirely sure how relevant the number of fouls are. Two cautionable challenges mean a dismissal. Both challenges were cautionable, plus Song was niggling Sunderland players throughout the first half with lenient treatment from the official in my view. He also gave verbals to the referee when dismissed. He deserved to go.

Still doesn't affect the point that Arsenal should have won but spurned chance after chance during the second half.

It is relevant since you said he was kicking people all match - which was bollocks. How was he niggling them if he gave away only 3 fouls? He also did not say anything when pulled up for the foul that wasn't, but did a little jig of frustration as opposed to the volley of abuse expected from Rooney at al.

Niggling challenges, not fouls. I have not once equated kicking with fouls. He was going in strong in challenges the whole first half, so much so that those around me were worried that he would give away a foul and get cautioned.

He did backchat the referee when dismissed.

As for Rooney, you are quite the master of tu quoque peter. I'm not entirely sure what Rooney has to do with Song's justifiable dismissal, but hey ho.

You're trying to make a illusory distinction - either they were fair or they weren't. In fact only 3 were fouls. Any alarm on Arsenal supporters part was probably due to Dowd reffing - and they were proven right in that. I was using Rooney as an example of the serial verbal abuser who regularly goes unpunished - in fact Song did his little dance which pissed off Dowd who sent him off.

RedCafe's Vladimir Posner is accusing me of making an illusory distinction? :)

Rooney has nothing to do with whether Song deserved to go. Whether or not he gets punished, or deserves to get punished for his outbursts isn't relevant to a discussion over whether a footballer committed two cautionable offences. Which he did.

By the way, why has the foul count diminished from 4 to 3? If we can discount a foul, how does that correspond to your 'it's a foul or it isn't' statement? Surely that's you trying to make an illusory distinction in itself?

Well you're doing a nice line in Lord Haw-Haw. You've now changed the thrust of your original argument markedly (probably because you checked the numbers and saw that your original post didn't stack up). If you want to argue two cautionable offences then the second of those wasn't even a foul but a dive by Malbranque. Basically crap reffing by Dowd as at Newcastle.

Surely you mean et al, and are including Fabregas in your list.

Little Cesc being one of the single most odious players in the modern game, and as your captain a fantastic symbol of everything that is 'wrong' with your club.

Speaking of Lord Haw Haw, back we come to Phil Dowd, the man responsible for causing Arsenal to bottle a 4-1 lead...

Let's not forget the first Newcastle goal was scored after 68 minutes. Even with 10 men a (supposed) top team should be able to hold out against a newly promoted side for the remaining 22 minutes.

But...but...but... French television blamed Phil Dowd too, before Interpol confirmed they were not in fact doing some sort of Dark Forces investigation and somebody had simply made that bit up.

Surely it's true if French television say it?

4-0 and you fecked it up! Come on it's hilarious. Thing is you did it v Wigan last year after leading 2-0. Spurs and that 4-4. You've got a history of bottling games, and bottling leagues. Stop blaming referees and look at your manager and your players.

Don't forget spurs at 2-0 up this year.

You don't need weak comments like "newcastle the newly promoted club" to point our flaws out. Get better.

Wanker.

Sent off two players for similar high footed challenges which were completely accidental. Cole shouldn't have been carded and Gibson was worthy of a yellow, but ended up being sent off 'to make up' for the earlier sending off from Cole.

Also Osman had a disallowed goal which should have stood.

Just awful.

I've been reading reports that it's been one of the worst refereeing displays in recent PL history, has it really been that bad?

This guy is fecking shithouse. Unfortunately I just caught the West Ham and Liverpool game for a third time and he just refuses to give anything. Any 50/50, pen, shout, foul. Utterly atrocious performance in a game that really easily could have seen players get multiple cards.

Always thought he was shite.
