So who do we reckon are the 'two others'? Maybe Fletcher given that he didn't feature against Roma?
LVG: “Young is also a winger, but he can also play wingback. I used him as wingback against Roma and he did very well and tomorrow I shall use him on the right as well as the left."
Young will play 90. If so, Shaw wont play at all

would love to win.... but with us dominating possession and really showing slick and inventive passing like we did against LA

really want us to get LvGs principles down properly

Really exited to see Zaha playing this game because LvG already mentioned five strikers before this game, who can play well in the current system. Also Young and even Nani get their changes to fullfil the boss plans as a forward. I think Zaha needs a good performance this game. I'm from The Netherlands and LvG is really clear about a profile for a player. Normally, he doesn't change his ''profile thinking'' for a player. So he definitely sees Zaha as a striker. He also mentioned, in a 1-4-3-3 system he has to buy another winger. So Zaha might only fullfil LvG's plans as a striker. Considering the coming games, he won't play too many minutes I think. I know training sessions are very important for LvG and all players are aware of that, but I hardly can't see a way Zaha can play himself in the team only with some training sessions.

With Smalling playing 90 and captain I think hell play in the middle of the back 3

does anybody have a link or know how the point system works to see who makes it to the final?
Pool A : Pts, Played, GD

Real Madrid : 2, 1, 0
Inter : 1, 1, 0
AS Roma : 0, 1, (-)1

Pool B : Pts, Played, GD
Liverpool FC : 3, 1, (+) 4
Manchester City : 3, 1, (+) 1
Olympiacos : 3, 2, (+) 2
AC Milan : 0, 2, (-) 7

Winner of Pool A vs Winner of Pool B plays in the final on August 04.

The team placing will be based on (a) points earned in the first two matches (3 points for a win, 2 for a win by penalty shootout, 1 for a penalty kick loss, 0 for a regulation loss), (b) head-to-head result, (c) goal differential, (d) goals scored.

So a team gets two points for a draw?

Stupid Americans.

Guys I've sort of missed the previous two games.

Who has LVG been selecting as captain?
Fletcher vs Galaxy, Cleverley vs Roma, Smalling vs Internazionale.

Usually someone pencilled in to play the full 90 minutes.

Fixed, kinda. Real swaps with Inter, City with Liverpool.

I expect this to be the starting eleven based off of van Gaal's selections so far and what he's said in the presser.

de Gea
M. Keane - Smalling - Evans
Valencia - Fletcher - Herrera - Young
Mata
Hernandez - Rooney
And this for the second half.

Lindegaard
Smalling - Jones - Blackett
Young - Cleverley - Kagawa - James
Lingard
Zaha - Welbeck
He's confirmed Smalling will play the ninety and all but reiterated that for Young who will play left and right wing-back over the duration of the match. Obviously, Rafael is recovering at Carrington and Shaw had been put on a specialised training regime which leads me to believe he won't feature at all in this match. I think the defence is quite an accurate predicition.

However, I'm going off a hunch for some of the midfield and attack selections. Using the template of our previous games, LVG has predominantly used our best players (Rooney, Mata, Evans, Herrera, de Gea, etc) during the first half where the match has been settled and then blooded younger or fringe players in the second half. Zaha is a nailed on inclusion in the second half and I think Welbeck might be the most suitable partner for him upfront, excluding Rooney.

Couldn't make this, unfortunately. I was at this venue three years ago when we beat Barcelona.

So the last paragraph: as written it implies that if we win today we are in the final. Or are we meant to assume that this is just to be used as the tie breaker if teams are level on points after 3 matches?

I'm so excited for this one. Don't know why, even more than than the LA Glaxy match. Anyone else feels like that?

With ya mate, missed the Roma game had to watch back later, but I'm really excited for this one. Think we'll be wearing the new third kit unfortunately. But hoping the players are beginning to buy into the philosophy more and have an more rounded idea of what we're meant to be doing.

The main thing I'd like to see is the wing-backs having more success. That's the big flaw in the way we've played this system so far, no threat whatsoever from wide areas. Hints from LVG that he's already noted that and is addressing it.

With Valencia and a Shaw who is strill trying to find his feet on the sides no wonder tbh.

If United win today but lose to Real I think they'll go through with 7 points while we'll be on 6. We have to alteast draw the last game vs them if both Real and us win today. If Inter win today they're almost guaranteed for the finals because they have 2 points already so a win over United and Roma will give them 8.

And yes your bolded part is spot on. :)

Of course... and just because it's probably the position that is most different from its equivalent in a 4231/443. It's really nothing at all like being a proper fullback, so it will take a while for the players to pick it up.

I'm not worried, just hoping to see some progress.

It's a big ask. Reduced attacking threat from wide areas is part of the trade off in this system.

With Shaw there is lot's of potential to improve in that position. On the right side without Rafael it looks dim.

Arguably if Van Gaal knew he was going to play 351 we should have brought fewer wingers (he's thinking of trying Zaha out as a striker, which is basically pointless) and another potential RWB, like Varela.

Not necessarily, not with specialised wingbacks. But with our resources... yeah, probably. Which is one of the reasons I don't see us sticking with it long-term.
