I'm going to say it again, you can prefer one or the other but anyone who thinks it's a no contest is an idiot
What about in the GOAT discussion ? He would at that point, as you say, have more World Player awards than Messi, more CLs than him, and have both a Euro and WC medal. He likely wins the Ballon D'Or and overtakes Messi 6-5.
That's his greatest legacy. He was down 4-1 in Ballon D'Ors won and has matched Messi(and would pass him if the above occurred).
To make up a 4-1 gap on Messi when it looked like Messi would continue winning is his greatest ever legacy. It shows his greatness and competitive drive.
No athlete has a better competitive drive than CR7 imo.
Yeah it would be a combination of both, no doubt. Let us say Coentrão still was at Madrid, would that be the same?It would surely be a combination of both wouldn't it ?
Depends on how he performs really. If he barely played due to injury or played poorly then it's pretty meaningless. If (as is more likely) he was a huge part of them winning those trophies then it would of course be a huge boost to his legacy.Question to all - if by chance Portutal win the WC (after winning the Euros) and Madrid win the CL in a few weeks (entirely likely) - how do you feel it would change Ronnie's legacy ?
I think Messi is the better player no matter what, but you can argue Ronaldo's a greater player if that makes sense. What about in the GOAT discussion ? He would at that point, as you say, have more World Player awards than Messi, more CLs than him, and have both a Euro and WC medal.
It'd certainly be another major crown in his cap, but I'm not sure it'd change his legacy too substantially in that he's already won so much throughout his entire career and has already established himself as one of the games most successful and prolific players. A WC would be massive, but the chances of it happening strike me as fairly remote. Portugal got relatively lucky in 2016 and are probably around the 6th/7th most likely team to win in Russia. They've got an outside shot but I don't see it happening.Question to all - if by chance Portutal win the WC (after winning the Euros) and Madrid win the CL in a few weeks (entirely likely) - how do you feel it would change Ronnie's legacy ?

Jesus that is fecking awful.I saw the following somewhere. Just thought we might find it interesting....

C. RONALDO vs MESSI IN COURT*
Judge: Have any of you won the Golden ball?
Ronaldo: Yes, 5 times.
Messi: Yes, 5 times as well.
Judge: Have any of you won the Golden Boot?
Ronaldo: Yes, 4 times.
Messi: Same here.
Judge: How many individual trophies have you each won?
Ronaldo: 16.
Messi: 13.
Judge: Have any of you played for another club’s first team besides your current one?
Ronaldo: Yes! Sporting CP in Portugal first division and Manchester United in BPL.
Messi: No. Only Barcelona.
Judge: Have any of you won a title with your national team?
Ronaldo: Yes! We won Portugal’s first ever European Championship.
Messi: No.
Judge: How many goals have each of you scored for your respective teams?
Ronaldo: Should I count the goals I’ve scored for Man United and Sporting?
Judge: No. Only for Real Madrid.
Ronaldo: 427 goals in 421 appearances or 9 seasons.
Messi: 534 goals in 617 appearances or 14 seasons.
Judge: Who has scored more hat-tricks in La Liga?
Ronaldo: Me. 35 in La Liga.
Messi: Ronaldo has. I’ve scored 28.
Judge: Which is the most prestigious competition in club football?
Ronaldo: Champions League.
Messi: Champions League.
Judge: Have any of you won Champions League?
Ronaldo: Yes, 4 times in total with 2 different teams. Once with Man United and 3 times with Madrid.
Messi: Yes, 4 times as well with Barcelona only.
Judge: Who has scored more goals in the CL between the two of you?
Ronaldo: I’ve scored 114 goals in the CL.
Messi: I’ve scored 97.
Judge: Who has more assists between the two of you in the CL?
Ronaldo: I have 38.
Messi: Ronaldo has. I have 26.
Judge: Who has scored more goals in total in the CL finals?
Ronaldo: Me.
Messi: Ronaldo.
Judge: Which one of you have scored more free kicks?
Ronaldo: I have.
Messi: Ronaldo has.
Judge: Most goals with weak foot?
Ronaldo: Me, I think.
Messi: (Nods in agreement).
Judge: Most goals from outside of the box?
Ronaldo: Me.. again.
Messi: Ronaldo.
Judge: Who has scored more headers?
Ronaldo: Is that a serious question?
Messi: ...
Judge: Who has a better penalty conversion rate?
Ronaldo: I think I do. I’ve scored 82% of the penalties I’ve taken.
Messi: I’ve scored 77% of the penalties I’ve taken.
Judge: Which one of you have scored the most goals in total during your career?
Ronaldo: I think I have. 628 goals.
Messi: I’ve scored 595.
Judge: How many football records do each of you hold in total for both club and country?
Ronaldo: 146
Messi: 110
Judge: Well, after analyzing all of the facts that have been presented to me. I can only draw one conclusion when it comes to comparing you both as football players. That conclusion is that Ronaldo is the better player in almost every category. When it comes to goal scoring and accolades for both club and country, Ronaldo comes out on top. Messi, you are without a doubt Barcelona’s best player of all time. But certainly not the world’s best ever. That is clearly Ronaldo at the moment.
Messi: But I am younger than Ronaldo and haven’t played as many matches as him.
Judge: I understand that, but until you surpass his goal scoring records and win as many trophies both individually and collectively as he has, then Ronaldo will, according to the statistics, be considered as the best football player of all time. Until then, keep pushing on and you just might be able to achieve just as much as Ronaldo ! . Case close.
Can some one disagree with this high court of football?
It's telling that the Ballon d'Or wins coincide with Real's team becoming better than Barcelona's. The BdO has always been about rewarding the best player from the best team. Cannavaro winning in 2006 pretty much confirms that.He likely wins the Ballon D'Or and overtakes Messi 6-5.
That's his greatest legacy. He was down 4-1 in Ballon D'Ors won and has matched Messi(and would pass him if the above occurred).

How can someone be better “no matter what”? Anyway, Ronaldo once again delivering in a clutch situation. Hand in all 3 goals. And what about that second one! Unbelievable player. Absolutely unbelievable.I think Messi is the better player no matter what, but you can argue Ronaldo's a greater player if that makes sense.
Can you post it again in case nobody has seen it?I saw the following somewhere. Just thought we might find it interesting....

NoRio makes a good point just now:
Would either have been as incredible for this long without the other to compete against?
Also said stop arguing about who's best, just enjoy watching them both.
This is a bit of a bizarre line of reasoning. He's one of the best players in the world - why's he not going to play for one of the best teams in the world, and why is that club going to do anything else than ensure their play is centred around their best player? Ronaldo's played for two clubs but things have largely been the same for him - he's the best player at one of the world's foremost clubs, and so an extraordinary amount of their play is designed with the intention of helping him score because he's ridiculously good at doing so.They're equal, but Ronaldo has proven himself more convincingly around Europe.
- Played so well as a young lad in Portugal that Manchester United players told SAF that he had to sign him.
- Took the Premier League by storm, dominating everyone.
- Continued this into Spain.
- Won the Euros with Portugal, a considerable feat.
- Certainly has an edge over Messi in the CL.
They're equally gifted players, but the bulk of Messi's excellence lies in La Liga where 75% of games are effortless walkovers. He's done well in the CL also, but not as well as Ronaldo, and he hasn't been spectacular for his national team despite Argentina's considerably higher level than Portugal. He has proven himself in his Barcelona comfort zone where everything revolves entirely around him, and he has never had anything less to support him than one of the best squads in the world. When you have two players who are equally good at football but one has proven a lot more than the other, history ought to be kinder to the former.
It's daft though, nobody's changing their mind and it's the same shit over and over for years. Just enjoy them.
I flip flop all the time on these two, have done from year to year. When I think one is down, they come back up and prove me wrong. It's daft though, nobody's changing their mind and it's the same shit over and over for years. Just enjoy them.
That's probably the biggest truth about it. I'm pretty sure both of them will come out one day and say it themselves.Rio makes a good point just now:

Yes.Rio makes a good point just now:

I was being glib, but seriously, what would the Caf do without this debate? It's daft though, nobody's changing their mind and it's the same shit over and over for years. Just enjoy them.
I change my argument depending on which fans need winding up at any given timeI flip flop all the time on these two, have done from year to year. When I think one is down, they come back up and prove me wrong.
I never understood that argument. Ronaldo isn't dominating the CL in his thirties to spite MessiRio makes a good point just now:

Nonsense. You can prefer one or the other, anyone thinking it's obvious and it's not a contest at all has no idea what he's talking about.
Is it heck.Yes.
I hate that argument and think it's disrespectful to both players.
It's not about spite, it's about being driven by elite competition.I never understood that argument. Ronaldo isn't dominating the CL in his thirties to spite Messi
