Messi is the most talented player to have ever played the game... but I think Ronaldo may have overtaken him in terms of big game moments. 1 and 2 for best of all time though for me.

I like how literally any time either of the two have a great game (i.e, most weeks, because they're both fecking ridiculously good) people come in and say that's it decided. As if one great performance out of hundreds of brilliant ones changes things in the slightest.

I mean...I'm firmly on the Messi camp on this one and I doubt that's going to change, but I'd certainly find it absurd if he put in a great quarter-final performance and anyone came in claiming that's tipped it in his favour. Tonight has been phenomenal from Ronaldo (obviously) and that's one of the best goals the competition has seen...but then he's been doing this for over a decade now! It's nothing new.

How on earth can you take the Ballon d'Or at face value?

Last season Messi was unequivocally the best individual player in Europe in the domestic leagues, it's not hyperbole to say he was single handedly carrying Barcelona, winning more points than anyone else with his goals (important last minute ones Vs Valencia, Villarreal, Real Madrid, Atletico etc, see here) and dropping deeper so everything went through him in the team. This season from September he started like a house on fire in the absence of Suarez and the departure of Neymar. Ignoring the 2 goals he got Vs Madrid in April, his performance that night was a one man show. On the other hand Ronaldo was afforded plenty of rest throughout the Liga season as Morata, Asensio, Isco and co took Real to La Liga glory. All lead to Ronaldo's astonishing scoring form in the CL knockouts (lest we forget Modric and Marcelo were two of Madrid's best PLAYERS along the way). This season he was berated right up until the new year as being past it, yet come January 2018 - Ronaldo wins the Ballon d'Or.

That begs the question - why did he win it in 2013? That was the year Bayern won the treble, Ribery won the UEFA Best Player award by a landslide and Messi was officially La Liga player of the season as he came ever so close to bettering his own individual best season, just blighted by injuries towards the end. Ronaldo was also crowned the Ballon d'Or winner that year too. Before you or anyone else mentions it, that was absolutely nothing like 2010. That year Messi won it by producing some of the most scintillating performances football fans have ever witnessed between the months of January and April (memorable games against Valencia, Arsenal and Zaragoza (let Sid Lowe refresh your mind), leading into the 2011 season, and you know how that ended up. Many consider that Messi's best years.

What I find intriguing (or rather boring) in this entire discussion is with Ronaldo it comes down essentially to stats and figures (goals scored, individual recognition, records broken etc). No one has dared mentioned a game where he's been the heartbeat of the Madrid side without getting his name on the score sheet. With Messi there's a genuine ignorance to the fact his performances speak far louder than what his stats suggest. It makes me wonder if the same ignorance would be shown if Maradona and Muller were plying their trade in this era. One clearly a better goalscorer, the other just a flat out better football player, both great players who were incredibly important to their Clubs/Countries success.
Why should anyone ever mention CR7 being the "heartbeat' of Real Madrid ? Is he a 10 or a false 9. What they can comfortably mention is he is their prime match winner. No one in their team contributes to wins and their success more. And its even more annoying you'd dare insinuate an all round attacker like CR7 in any shape of form similar to Gerd Muller. Along with the laughable insinuation Messi runs games any where near the way Maradona consistently did

Ronaldo has definitely taken it during their later years but we're so lucky to have them both. Who the hell is next?

Ronaldo's mostly been more of a goal machine in recent years than an all-round attacker right enough with less overall influence on a game when he isn't scoring, albeit he's arguably the most effective goals machine the game has ever seen alongside Messi.

You have to say, Ronaldo has made this discussion significantly harder than it was a few years ago. Dude's been killing it with 3 CL wins in the last 4 years, Euro 2016 and finally a league title last year.

Who is, in your opinion?
Tunisia, South Africa, Chile. Rehaghel's Greece would wipe the floor with all of them. People conflate Greece's being a weak football nation historically with their Euro win being a fluke. Make no mistake about it they were veery, very good in that tournament. Outmatching everyone tactically.

So he scores a fantastic goal and we who think that messi is better( i am not a fanboy, i don't care for any of them) are suddenly ignorant. Messi is doing this whole his career. Showing up in big matches. Until 4 years ago, ronaldo had stigma that he doesn't score in biggest matches.
The fact is that both are great. I can write you 10 things why messi is better. You will write 10 things why is ronaldo better. But to call it over ofter one fantastic game is too much.

It's strange though. Madrid have dominated Messi in El classico for a while. Was it 7 or 8 goalless games until late last year? And this season v Chelsea is the first awesome Messi performance since they last won it, and that season was the first since they beat us at Wembley.
What I'm saying is, Messis so called undoubted superiority for the majority of the last 4/5 years have come due to his performances against Sevilla, Celta etc.
If Ronaldo was doing this at 28 then there's every chance he would be considered greater than Messi. Minds were already made up and his history setting form is dismissed as just a bicycle kick or the posts mocking Ronaldo at the start of the season.
Messi is the best player in the world!!! Ronaldo just win the Balon For because he dominated Europe! Ronaldo will probably win again if Madrid win the CL which isn't right!!!!! Its as if Ronaldo is cheating and taking the easy route.
All that nonsense diminishes the once in a lifetime achievements that we are witnessing right now.

Why is it that you Messi fans constantly overlook his assist statistics from every single season ? They way you lot talk one would believe CR7 is a mere poacher P
like Pippo Inzaghi was. You really should have more respect than that. Rather than constantly trying to belittle his talent just to magnify who you prefer.

Question to all - if by chance Portutal win the WC (after winning the Euros) and Madrid win the CL in a few weeks (entirely likely) - how do you feel it would change Ronnie's legacy ?

Well done he’s 13
At this moment in time it's like comparing Gerd Muller to Cruyff. Literally all he does is finish off moves his team creates. He's a great striker but as an overall player there simply is no comparison. All he has over Messi is his aerial threat. The rest there is no contest.

Messi has always felt more naturally gifted - the guy was probably dribbling a ball in his mother's womb.

Whereas Ronaldo's pathway to the top and sheer will to be the best makes him a rarified individual.

We needn't pick one over the other, just be grateful.

I'm not belittling his talent. I recognise he's one of the best players of all-time. In my post I've quite literally said he's arguably the most effective scorer of all-time.

Poachers/goal machines can get assists, too, though, so I'm not sure what that has to do with anything? Ronaldo's all-round game is still very good (and better than most players in the game) but it's fairly undeniable in recent years his overall influence on games has largely diminished in comparison to Messi. He's on phenomenal form at the moment and is producing some of the best football of his career, but had a fairly barren spell in La Liga during the first half of the season.

He will be taken into a level where no-one can touch him in the public eye. Tbh though, I don't agree with counting team cup wins in a personal legacy.

You can even see the poll figures moving slightly. Which is ridiculous bearing in mind - again - these guys have been producing some of the most phenomenal football we've ever seen for over an entire decade now.

I (arrogantly, admittedly) wasn't including tournaments like the ACoN. More tournaments with top level pedigree like Euro's, World Cup and the Copa.

Chile of the last few years? I reckon they'd destroy Greece personally.

Ronaldo fans get angry at the Gerd comparisons but surely they can see why they arise in the first place? FWIW, he's definitely a more talented footballer than Muller could ever have dreamt of being, don't get me wrong, but is his style of play all that different from some of the best pure goalscorers we've seen?
They have (had) very different styles in lots of ways.

He likely wins the Ballon D'Or and overtakes Messi 6-5.

That's his greatest legacy. He was down 4-1 in Ballon D'Ors won and has matched Messi(and would pass him if the above occurred).

To make up a 4-1 gap on Messi when it looked like Messi would continue winning is his greatest ever legacy. It shows his greatness and competitive drive.

No athlete has a better competitive drive than CR7 imo.

I saw the following somewhere. Just thought we might find it interesting....

.......................

C. RONALDO vs MESSI IN COURT*

Judge: Have any of you won the Golden ball?
Ronaldo: Yes, 5 times.
Messi: Yes, 5 times as well.
Judge: Have any of you won the Golden Boot?
Ronaldo: Yes, 4 times.
Messi: Same here.
Judge: How many individual trophies have you each won?
Ronaldo: 16.
Messi: 13.
Judge: Have any of you played for another club’s first team besides your current one?
Ronaldo: Yes! Sporting CP in Portugal first division and Manchester United in BPL.
Messi: No. Only Barcelona.
Judge: Have any of you won a title with your national team?
Ronaldo: Yes! We won Portugal’s first ever European Championship.
Messi: No.
Judge: How many goals have each of you scored for your respective teams?
Ronaldo: Should I count the goals I’ve scored for Man United and Sporting?
Judge: No. Only for Real Madrid.
Ronaldo: 427 goals in 421 appearances or 9 seasons.
Messi: 534 goals in 617 appearances or 14 seasons.
Judge: Who has scored more hat-tricks in La Liga?
Ronaldo: Me. 35 in La Liga.
Messi: Ronaldo has. I’ve scored 28.
Judge: Which is the most prestigious competition in club football?
Ronaldo: Champions League.
Messi: Champions League.
Judge: Have any of you won Champions League?
Ronaldo: Yes, 4 times in total with 2 different teams. Once with Man United and 3 times with Madrid.
Messi: Yes, 4 times as well with Barcelona only.
Judge: Who has scored more goals in the CL between the two of you?
Ronaldo: I’ve scored 114 goals in the CL.
Messi: I’ve scored 97.
Judge: Who has more assists between the two of you in the CL?
Ronaldo: I have 38.
Messi: Ronaldo has. I have 26.
Judge: Who has scored more goals in total in the CL finals?
Ronaldo: Me.
Messi: Ronaldo.
Judge: Which one of you have scored more free kicks?
Ronaldo: I have.
Messi: Ronaldo has.
Judge: Most goals with weak foot?
Ronaldo: Me, I think.
Messi: (Nods in agreement).
Judge: Most goals from outside of the box?
Ronaldo: Me.. again.
Messi: Ronaldo.
Judge: Who has scored more headers?
Ronaldo: Is that a serious question?
Messi: ...
Judge: Who has a better penalty conversion rate?
Ronaldo: I think I do. I’ve scored 82% of the penalties I’ve taken.
Messi: I’ve scored 77% of the penalties I’ve taken.
Judge: Which one of you have scored the most goals in total during your career?
Ronaldo: I think I have. 628 goals.
Messi: I’ve scored 595.
Judge: How many football records do each of you hold in total for both club and country?
Ronaldo: 146
Messi: 110
Judge: Well, after analyzing all of the facts that have been presented to me. I can only draw one conclusion when it comes to comparing you both as football players. That conclusion is that Ronaldo is the better player in almost every category. When it comes to goal scoring and accolades for both club and country, Ronaldo comes out on top. Messi, you are without a doubt Barcelona’s best player of all time. But certainly not the world’s best ever. That is clearly Ronaldo at the moment.
Messi: But I am younger than Ronaldo and haven’t played as many matches as him.
Judge: I understand that, but until you surpass his goal scoring records and win as many trophies both individually and collectively as he has, then Ronaldo will, according to the statistics, be considered as the best football player of all time. Until then, keep pushing on and you just might be able to achieve just as much as Ronaldo ! . Case close.

Can some one disagree with this high court of football?

I read that in the quarterfinals of the Champions League he has an average of more than one goal per game. Brutal. Scoring goals of that level at this point of the competition is really difficult.

The greatest CL player ever.

I still think Messi's a better player, but Ronaldo has outperformed him in the CL imo.
