He's no worse than Pogba in midfield 2. Totally bossing the midfield. Shame can't be said for others.

Being made a scapegoat of again - absolutely wasn't at his best but not worthy of some these comments here.

In that case Fellaini bossed the midfield as well, because West Brom made no attempt to actually attack. By his own standards Carrick was poor today, misplaced a lot of simple passes that otherwise would have been as natural as breathing to him.

And the cycle continues.

That's OK, he'll not play for 5 games and he'll become the saviour again.

Yes that's true. Some misplaced passes should be expected after a long laid off. But him and Fellaini did boss the midfield. Xavi could've played today, and wouldn't make any different on the score.

Good game. Stole the ball any time WBA tried to play the ball forward.

Nonsense. Poors game, not effected the game whatsoever. Could've put any second rate midfielder in there against a team who sat on the edge of their box and the results would've been the same.

He did boss the midfield, and did a good job. You have Herrera for him today, I don't think we'd control the game.

Him and fellaini were always going to struggle against a team that sat back, we desperately need to strengthen midfield in the summer because relying on these two isn't good enough.

When you say 'boss' the midfield, what does that mean exactly? Because if he wasn't there I doubt there game would've played out any differently. There was nothing to boss. Instead he should have been employing his famed passing ability to pick holes in the defense, which he didn't, at all.

Let's just agree he isn't part of the problem today, how's that? His game is to control the flow, which he did a good job, when you consider Fellaini was his other partner.

He was horrible.

His job is to set the tempo for us, instead he was happy to play to West Brom's pace. Granted he had no movement ahead as usual but he was so laboured today.

So his entire role in the side is to play average passes for 90 minutes when we are up against a side with no intention to attack or fight for the midfield? If we had Blind, Pogba or Herrera in there today they would've used the ball a lot better than Carrick had done.

Don't want to see him lining up for us next season at all. You had a good run Carrick, but it's over.

His famed passing ability in a creative sense is well overrated IMO. Every few games when he does make that pass the English commentators will say 'Carrick only ever looks to play the ball forward' which is bollocks.

Nah, I don't think if you have any of those in midfield two with Fellaini, could've done better than Carrick today.

Well disagree there but at the very least they would have tried something, anything.

Spot on.

He shouldn't be a starter and I think his performances this season have been overblown.

Takes too long on the ball and his passing hasn't been THAT good this season imo.

Disagree. The thing is Carrick failed to inject pace into passing game. Xavi or Scholes would help raising the tempo suiting our players. Carrick instead just being alright with "bossing" the midfield but by playing to his own speed = West Brom is more than happy to play along with, as they have time to get back into defensive position. I wouldn't call that bossing or control the flow of the game but pointless possession.

Not our worst player today, but very underwhelming

He was ok, the movement ahead of him didn't offer him many passing options.

This is what I saw. Quite a few times I saw the ball roll back to him, half expected a one-time incisive pass. But I look up, after Carrick himself has obviously noted, and see dogshite options.

We would probably have done better if Young played up front in place of Martial and Blind at LB.

That's only half truth. Thing is Carrick doesn't want to force thing. I meant some deep play maker would dribble a bit trying tease opposition players, getting them out of position. Carrick simply just wants to sit deep, received the ball, take touches & time to pick options and pass. Not all of our players were bad with their movement, just that West Brom sat deep, and congested the space. Carrick position should be an area where there is more space, which as I just suggested he should try to lure them out.

He's only did half of the job right = contain West Brom and prevent them to counter attack with passing & helping our defense = recycling possession. Play making wise, he was underwhelming

I thought he played well. Distributed the ball well, and broke up a few potentially scary counter attacks. Only player at the end who played with any sense of urgency, too.

If playing well means playing it safe, then yes he played well. We needed more than that.

I don't even think he played that safe. He played a couple of very nice passes, and another to Lingard which really should've resulted in at least a shot on target. His little chipped ball in the centre of the pitch, when most midfielders would've turned seeing no forward options due to opposition players surrounding them, was lovely. Something Scholes would do a bit.

Even if he didn't play as many of his standard beautiful passes, and did play a bit more reserved than usual, I don't necessarily think that was a bad thing. He kept the ball well and distributed it well to our forward 4 in hope that they'd be the ones to break WB down.

I'm starting to think it's time for him to call it a day. We need to move on.

People saying he didn't play well but Mourinho was impressed with his performance.

Maybe people were expecting him to play a certain way but he was playing to instructions and the Manager was happy with his performance in post match interview which goes to prove that sometimes what fans call bad performance is not necessarily a bad one especially if the Manager has the game plan

Played as if he was playing in his testimonial yesterday, sadly I think this will be his last season as he's been a great player for us and someone who'll be hard to replace.

Whoscored's match stats rate him our poorest player v WBA, with Fellaini our best. That sure does seem at odds with the majority of (biased-to-feck) opinions on here.
