Social media is a BS excuse, it screams of old man yelling at the clouds.

Players of teams much better than us are on social media too, such as Sterling, Walker and plenty more.

He’s 100% right about the lack of effort though.

Social media has nothing to do with it, if you’re going to blame something then blame the right thing.
Social media is a part of the problem, if your focus is more on branding than on your profession, the players you've mentioned above think football first, then what comes with the prestige of their position.Success is defined by focus of attention, along with other attributes, for example if you are dating one girl or guy, your energy will be targetted and focused, whereas if you are dating more than one person, the energy, time and effort exerted will take it's toll eventually.

Aside from the fact that Neville obviously wasnt criticising the bigger social media users but rather referring to the criticisms of players on social media...

Social media is definitely a big fecking problem. There are clearly a whole swathe of players out there who care more about their profile and marketability online than they do about their performances on the pitch, or even their football careers.

Because no shit, if you become a social media star you have commercial power that could last far longer than your football career.

Neville has something against certain players. His opinions are coloured by this fact.

Matic and Young are two underperforming United players who are not avid social media users so social media has nothing to do with anything.

You know who has an IG account which is updated regularly? Cristiano Ronaldo.

This is just ultimately an aspect of football now though. Nothing we can do about it. Other clubs have image-obsessed social media whores in their team but still win stuff.

And it's just a new form of egotism within clubs anyway. Some of the players we fecking adore at this club were selfish and often irrational bastards who loved themselves far too much. Difference was we had a great manager and so they won us stuff as well.

That comes straight from the top when you have Ed Woodward at the investors meeting talking about how many Facebook likes signing Sanchez gave us.

Today in the midst of all the gloom, Paul Pogba played one ball in the first half, some 70/80 yards directly into the path of Rashford, who couldn't take it with his left, so tried to hook it with his right... chance missed! After that we had to wait until the 86th minute for anything resembling a 'threat' on the Everton goal.

That one ball was stupendous and if Pogba had 10 other players maybe only half as gifted as he is, but with bags of energy and commitment, around him all playing to support him, doing his grafting willingly and without question, then he might be worth £350,000 a week; however for the rest of this match his contribution was no better (or worse) than most of the others who are on less than half his salary, and these players know his performances are certainly not worth that amount.

The attitude of our players was almost beyond belief, sloppy, no interest, lacking energy (except for McTominay when he came on), is it possible Ole has told most of them their services will not be required next year and that's the reason? I honestly cannot think of any other for such a miserable 'un-United-like' display.
Why Pogba should go....besides him being a virus.

Without reading 5 pages of stuff, I was actually having this conversation with an Arsenal fan yesterday.

This is the difference between De Bruyne and Pogba.
We've got one player who keeps his head down, don't really hear a murmur from him (Just like Scholes), does his job and is an exceptional player.
Pogba on the other hand, is all over the media, talks a good game, has the ability of De Bruyne, but just doesn't really cut it
Put Pogba in that City team, and they will be at least as good as they are now, if not better. On the other hand, replace Pogba with De Bruyne in our current United team, and we would be as bad as we are, if not worse. So no, it is not because one player keeps his head down and the other is not. Pogba really is such an easy target.

hard to attack players when the club encourage it. Pogba died on his arse this game, and the club shown just how shameless they are

Sanchez wages are a big part of the problem as he hasn't earned a penny of that money. But like many other overpaid superstars we have in the squad, they do not give a damn because millions of pounds are topping up their bank accounts every month.

When you see Pogba chatting and embracing an Everton player in the tunnel before they go out you know they are not fighting a battle, mearly turning up and going through the motions.

The place is rotten to the core.

You couldn't be more wrong, put Pogba in City's team and his abilty to doodle on the ball would drive Pep and his team mates insane,he would also have to work alot harder, as for De Bruyne, he would drive the team, thru his actions, also De Bruyne, has no issue helping the team, by doing the defensive side of the game.

As people keep stating you need to have two players behind Pogba, so that he does not have to do the defensive side of the game, neither Silva's would be performing that role, for Pogba.

This. Neville is 100 percent right esp about work rate.
Ed Woodward has got his wish and turned us into the DisneyLand of world football; Euro Disney that is.
When transfers are made in part on marketability and when players' poor attitudes and performances and toxicity are tolerated at the expense of one of the greatest managers of all time simply to preserve marketability of said players and their ability to generate social media hits and likes and branding then the pendulum has swung too far in the direction of the suits.

Ed Woodward has to admit he has ultimately failed; his decisions are destroying the very brand he seeks to market and his inability to understand that a good football team can in of itself sustain branding by being competitive and successful, will be his undoing if he carries on being the CEO/Football Manager/Sporting Director he seemingly wants to be. He got the job on loyalty by the Glazers (He setup their credit facilities and acquisition of shares) and any other business would have sacked him by now. If this was a full plc again Woodward would have had serious questions to answer.

Everyone questioning Neville is falling into the same trap; Many of these players may have shown a spark or two but this match showed me who cannot be relied on when the chips are down.
These players owe Ole and us a big performance these next 4 games. If they don't even push for that top 4 - lose or win - then they can be shown the door and sold.

Back Ole 100 percent. If we are performing like this next year then by all means question him.

Yeah, like how it drove Deschamps and those French players and Juventus teammates insane. Alright. His career is more than just the last few years with us, and he's already shown he's capable of driving the team and working hard. Sigh.

Agree with everything Neville has said apart from his comment about social media, which is clearly aimed at Paul Pogba.

I'm not Pogba's biggest fan, but the way some are out to get him as soon as we lose is incredible. He is surrounded by mediocrity, and he can't pull miracles out there. Today the majority of our players were far worse than he was (Matic, Dalot, Martial, DDG etc), yet they are not being blamed as much as Pogba.

I fail to see how social media has anything to do with this. It screams of being old fashioned and traditional for the sake of it. Times have moved on, social media is normal now. It doesn't necessarily mean a player is not committed to his job or isn't professional if they use it and post videos of themselves enjoying their lives by joking around with their friends and family.

It's appalling that some, a select few on this forum find flaw in Neville's argument, with exception to social media focus. It is the height of delusion that in full view of the obvious ills of this team, you should not come to full agreement on the things he pointed out, otherwise.

It is absolutely horrific for a team blessed with as much talent as ours to work significantly less hard than others who possess far less talent. Running 4k less in one half than Everton is unforgivable. Lest anyone should point out that this is an anomaly, I assure you, it is not. Running less is atypical of these players.

Coasting on ability and talent, with effort levels failing to match. Unquestionably, undeniably and completely true statement by Neville.

I've read the running stats pretty much every Monday in the paper and we are in the bottom 4 90% of the time. And that's with 4 different managers.

I'd rather Neville take over than Giggs. Maybe he had some bad luck his first time around, but clearly he's an intelligent man with passion.
If we have to choose between inexperienced ex players... he'd be one at the top of my list.

He was referring to a number of players, Martial and Pogba must top the list but it wouldn't surprise me if he was talking about Lingard either as to performances have dropped off and he's built the whole media image that is frowned upon.

Would Pogba dwell on the ball with so many passing options all around him and with clear general instructions to keep the ball moving ?
Not a fecking chance. You really think Guardiola wouldn't make him better ? That's crazy talk.

This comes down to work rate.

Look at the level of focus, dedication and hard work that the players in the last four of the champions league put in. Not one united player would make any of those squads...not because of ability but because of their application and work rate.

United get schooled by Barca and Pogba and de Gea come out complaining about being compensated for loss of earnings if they miss top four this season and dont qualify for Champions League next season.

The comments here defending players social media use are bizarre. The problem is not social media use the problem is too many united players are more concerned about their social media profile than results on the pitch.

These players stealing a living.

People forget Feries first job when he joined united was breaking up the united drinking club, where antics off the pitch had too great an influence of events on the pitch..while nonlonger to do with drink Fergies successors have all had the same problem hopefully Ole will be the one to finally grasp the nettle and dealt with it.

That's not true though, we were in the top quarter of the league under LVG.

What about the Silva twins or Aguero or the Liverpool lot? Never hear much about their social media activity. Are they not as active or they don't get the scrutiny that comes the way of our players?
I don’t follow those guys so I don’t know. Either way, they are performing on the pitch so their social media activity is of little significance.

Spot on. This team needs a new spine and leadership. We've seen the same rancid shit under LVG and Mourinho, we are spineless and lazy. Talent is something you can't change but not putting up the work rate as other players in other teams put is unacceptable.

Funny how the host asked is it pogba? And he didn’t answer.

You just want it to be pogba

He couldn’t exactly blame him today after he was the only one who played up to standard.

I think he’s looking more at Lingard, Rashford and martial tbh

If that's his standard, then maybe that's a massive part of our problems.

He's piss8ed on us before and he's doing it again.

Don't sell him to Madrid, send him to Madrid. £80 million plus Isco would be our best transfer deal since SAF's days.

Really didn't Pogba play for Allegri and Conte and he was still dwelling on the ball,Pogba is more inclined to play the pass over the top, or a cross field ball rather than play it short and move, but then again these guys are defensive coaches.

Social media has nothing to do with how we play. Virtually all players worldwise use it. Doesnt make the top clubs play any differently. The fact is Neville and his ilk will clutch at any straw to avoid the realityof we are woeful as a footballing team. This is all down to players not giving 100% in training, nor on the field

Disagree with the social media part as it's irrelevant and a huge part of 21st century living, footballer or not. Strongly agree with the rest.

I'm also baffled by how much vitriol you see on this forum towards excellent, long-serving players like Neville. Why people seem so angry that a squad full of dire, spineless, passionless, complacent players are being criticised by a member of several highly successful, brave, committed and hungry squads is beyond me.

Some people seem to confuse honest, constructive criticism with hatred of Manchester United whenever a former player makes negative remarks about the current side. It's childish and plain wrong in a vast majority of cases (I'll give you Paul Parker though).

Gary has a point with social media players but the problem is finding players who have the same dedication, work ethic and drive towards the game (which the old United team had) are way too rare now.

I remember watching an interview with Roy Keane and he remaked how laughable it was for people to celebrate winning a semi final in the dressing room. He basically said when you win a semi-final, you should then be thinking about the final. Natural born leaders still playing the game which spring to mind would be players like Kompany, VVD... Not Pogba with his new haircut, new dance and new sneakers.

As a Liverpool fan, I've seen that lack of experience and focus ruin us. I remember Gerrard's crazy speech in a huddle after winning a match during our title run in.. he was talking like we'd won it - the next match he slipped, and we ended up losing the title.

That experience, focus and no-nonsense attitude is rare. Really rare. And most players don't have it. But the special ones do, and the special ones used to be ear-marked and purchased by Manchester United. I'm thankful that now you guys don't seem to know how to pick them out.

What Ole wants to build, and what Neville is alluding to, is an ethos which has long left your set of players. Ole will require time to ingrain it back into the likely younger generations of players.

Its clear you have multiple poisons in the dressing room. As much as most of you seem to hate Pogba one day, then say hes the best player in the world when he has five matches in a row; its clear that for a 90M pound player in the grand scheme of things, he makes very little difference to your league position. You need and deserve a leader who is going to be there ALL season, during the thick and the thin - he's simply not. I'd actually take someone like a prime Yaya Toure over a Pogba because you know hes going to turn up in the big games.

Neville is a slightly older generation. He might be getting at all the promotional tweets some do for new boots and other deals they have etc. That he is feeling some are not focused enough on training and playing on the pitch. That they are intent on showing off their cars, where they are eating, their houses. Footballers have always had this stuff, but social media now gives them the platform to flaunt it. The players have a lot of money and can spend it on whatever they like. Although to be honest Gary isn't averse to having his say on twitter etc.
