And going into this season on the last year of his contract, every game there'd be journos asking questions about it and it'd be a distraction both on and off the pitch which the club doesn't need.
That’s pretty much it , if he had a contract till 2023 then he wouldn’t have got an extension

Pretty much how I feel.

All of this “he deserved an extension” talk is crazy to me. When he came in what were your expectations of him and what did he exceed?

No elite team wants him, he would have just as easily renewed next summer.
His previous managerial roles meant at least I had no expectations of him when he came in. After all, he was initially appointed as caretaker. But his performances and progress with the team rightfully earned him the position of manager and now a contract extension.

I just don't see what this "no elite club wants him" has anything to do with it. He has made fantastic progress from where we were to where we are now, hence he has deserved this extension.

You always need to build a solid foundation for success. We had very little to work on when Ole arrived. The club was in complete disarray. The scouting department was a complete mess.
By all accounts there was supposed in-fighting and personality clashes during the Jose period. Team harmony was totally shot. And this at a time when we were producing some utterly atrocious football on the field. Ole has fixed so much at the club in his 2 and a half seasons. The fact we can sign players like Sancho and possibly Varane without begging or purely enticing them with big wads of cash is a testament to the positive environment Ole has created.

People talk about the recent success of Tuchel, and he had a great finish to the campaign, but Chelsea had the foundation already in place. We didn't have that.
I reiterate we were a mess.

If Ole and the team get a trophy it would be fully deserved.

Bit premature. That's exactly what we thought with Jose as well. He got us trophies, then a second position , a new contract only to be sacked 6 months later.

While I agree Ole has been fine, we should have waited until atleast Christmas to see how things go in this season. If we are far behind, he is getting the sack anyway. So I really don't understand the timing. What difference would it have made be it July or December ?

Baffling !

This is all good but then means nothing if we don't follow through and add a DM and a CB ( Varane) to this window

Season starts in three weeks and let's be honest, as things stand now who actually thinks we can win the title? Right now we look a top 4 club and I guess for the owners that's more than enough

For the fans we want to challenge for the major trophies and hopefully win one
But hopefully fans are realistic too

You can’t judge Ole on the job he’s doing. It’s what he did at Cardiff that’s important.

Progress. He took a team that finished 2nd 6 months before and took us to 2nd 3 years later while winning feck all during that time and playing Jose-esque football. I am not saying he is doing terrible but the progress on the pitch is so minimal that it's pointless to even discuss it. Off the pitch he is great, I am not arguing. None of Real, Barca, Chelsea, City, Juve etc. would reward their manager with 3+1 year contract after those 3 years of "progress".
Fair enough then you make a valid point. I think ole is our best option at this moment in time because I think he has momentum, he knows the club, is good at managing the media etc.

Out of interest who would you appoint instead? I'm not trying to be argumentative here, I'm asking sincerely.

I cant think of anyone out there available that I would choose to replace ole who has 3 years under his belt at the club he spent around a decade at as a player and has brought a bit of enthusiasm back, imo.

City, Liverpool and Chelsea fans are the most delighted with this news...

United won't be a threat for the next few years so can safely rule us out for winning trophies
We finished above 2 of those last year, so they can be as happy as they like.

Happy with this, the squads going in the right direction. He's did far better than Jose, Louie and Moyes in that respect and he's got the team pretty consistent in the league. We have to kick on this season but even if we don't and he leaves, he'll leave the club in far better condition than he found it which is certainly something his 3 predecessors can't claim.

Literally go on every single social media platform. They are literally pissing themselves laughing whilst we spend hundreds of millions and are still watching our biggest rivals clean up all the trophies.

Nobody fears us and why would they? We can't even win second-rate trophies when we have the chance to do so
They of course won't openly admit it but most rival fans will begrudgingly admit United are a force to be reckoned with. They certainly wouldn't be seeing us as a walkover, that's for sure.

I'd rather be in our position than the likes of Arsenal, Spurs, Juventus, Barcelona, Real Madrid. The only team I'm genuinely worried about this season is Chelsea.

It doesn't hurt to show him some confidence I guess. It's not like we lack the resources to replace him regardless of a new contract.

By some distance the best manager we have had since SAF. Question is whether that is enough.

Honestly it’s neither here nor there, if he doesn’t win anything next season he’ll be gone. If he wins something then that’s great and there’s no problems.
Nah that's the problem I think our owners are content with champions league qualification, hence the extension

It is but we were lucky to have people like SAF or Busby who were truly one of football greats ever. The contract extension was inevitable. Ole should have either be sacked (and he really should have been if we look at the results during his reign here) or a contract extended. The latter is obviously more convenient for the club so no surprise we went that route. We are not winning anything with him but I think we can all agree that winning trophies is not our priorities anymore so I guess it's all good, we can celebrate this day.
 Should have been sacked he’s done a good job. Would have done an exceptional job had he won a trophy or two but he’s exceeded every level headed fans ambitions. This season will rightly be a big one and it’s one in which he should be judged more harshly if we fall short as we now have the squad to really compete.

Have you ever played at CB?
Funny enough, yes, too shit for other positions that require more technical qualities.

I'm glad that I made you laugh.
It's just comforting to know what type of people you are discussing with.

I genuinely think it's important to know whether the person I am talking to has ever played the game before or is just one of those who watches it.
Given two people watch/follow the progress and facts equally, having played a fecking pub game can't possibly make one of them more qualified. It's just a "I am very badass" attitude.

I'm not anti Scottish, I just wanted Moyes out.
We literally finished above Chelsea for two seasons in a row and Liverpool last season. Give your head a wobble. Call yourself a fan
Thats got nothing to do with Liverpool playing with no defenders for a whole season and Chelsea sacking their manager. No. Watch Ole have us finish below them this season and give your head a wobble.

Which manager should we hire to win the league with this squad then? What manager finishes above second last year? Or 3rd the year before?

That’s what oppo fans do most when they think we’re on the rise again. Watch their reaction to Sancho signing, Varane if he signs, they will play it down and try to laugh it off. It’s a narrative that bedded in under previous managers not Ole.

You must be mad if you think we are not at least progressing as a squad. We all like winning trophies the most important thing was getting this squad in order after 6 years of mismanagement, we should have won a couple of cups along the way but that’s not a reason to totally ignore the positives.

We are attracting top players, have a transformed squad under Ole that are all young and talented, improved so much behind the scenes in multiple areas.

We all agree we need silverware next, it will come as a result of these positives and it most importantly it will be sustainable

You make it sound like he took over Everton. But you are right, most of fans had 0 ambitions when Ole was appointed full time. We all knew that trophies is way beyond his reach and it's not gonna change this year, or the next year.

I'm ok with it tbh. We've come a long way with Ole, he continually makes good decisions with squad building, individual performances have improved massively, team performances have improved and last season he was implementing a more front footed and higher press approach in big games too. For this one, he's shown enough constant progression to trust the process. No he's not Pep or Klopp, Nagelsmann went to Bayern, so why not? I can't really say there's any other manager I'd prefer to be in charge outside of those 3, certainly not Poch or someone like that either.

Good stuff. He was one penalty save away from silverware. Let's hope we kick on this season.

Don’t you think he deserves some job security himself after what he’s done? Also, players like Varane and Sancho would probably want some assurances that the manager who’s been chasing them for months is going to be sticking around.
He already has a full season under his belt. He's being backed and all his prime targets are being bought. There's literally no interest in his services from any decent club, so why the hurry? Why can't we wait like, for October or Christmas to see if he deserves an extension? Why are we renewing him after he fumbled a chance at winning a European trophy versus a much much worse Villareal squad?

That's the problem. His renewal was agreed back in April itself, and they were waiting for right time to announce it. Obviously, couldn't do it after losing a final. So, they chose to sneak this in after Sancho signing. We are continuously rewarding mediocrity (see Jones, Bailly, Mata) Ole is latest in a very long line so forgive me if I am not optimistic about how things are run here.

Reaching 4 semi-finals, Europa league final and finishing 3rd/2nd in his first full seasons. Bringing in exciting, quality players which have improved the first team whilst developing the likes of Shaw into one of the best in his position. But because he hasn't won a trophy yet, this is mediocrity to you?
Thank you for proving my point. This is new Utd under Ole, content with making CL places every year while being near men when it comes to silverware.

That's very definition of mediocrity which so many Utd fans are happy with, I am not. Our squad has serious potential and needs a better a manager to help them take the next step. Ole won't suddenly develop tactical nous to win big boy trophies, just like Fred won't suddenly turn into a world beater no matter how much time he is given. There's levels to this stuff.

Ole has spent 350mil.

Compared to what Klopp and Pep have spent it's pretty modest.

Not sure why people are so bothered either way. Literally just shrugged my shoulders when I heard the news.
Do managers contracts really mean anything in the grand scheme of things?

Brilliant news.

How there are reds who aren’t desperate for him to succeed here is beyond me.

Now he’s got his number 1 target from the day he joined and I can’t wait to see his team take shape.

No, I'd say in this business almost no one really deserves security for longer than the current season.
I’m not saying he shouldn’t be sacked if he eventually deserves it, but he deserves to know the club are backing him. This is evidence of that.

Now needs to prove that the board backing him is the right move by winning trophies now. He has been backed in the transfer market so needs to kick on. Top 4 only is not a trophy and wont be good enough for the fans from now on.

They have no answer to this, they NEVER have an answer to this.

Its just the childish ‘sack him anyway’ blah blah without a single suggestion about who will leapfrog the two best managers on planet Earth.

Until that manager becomes available you stick with continuous improvement.

Not one fan would predict us to win the league this season or even come close . I wonder how many years in his reign would it be fair to expect a shot at the league or the champions league. The whole finished second thing is hardly a major achievement considering we finished with 73 points which in most seasons would barely get you top 4
