Well thankfully, the movie was brilliant. Didn’t expect it to enjoy it as much. Not sure it’s 4 oscars worthy, but it is very very good. Thank feck
Not quite the vintage year for movies. A bunch of good ones but none I’d say were brilliant. Parasite was a very good one but I’d say there have been better Korean films.

Fully deserved the Oscar. The layers and metaphors blew my mind. The use of stairs as the social ladder, Parks disgust with the stench of the lower class whilst getting turned on by the very things he fired his driver for indulging in, the guy trapped inside the basement working the lights for Park. There's just so much going on. So many impactful scenes too. Incredible! Totally deserves the appreciation its getting. Bong is a master of his craft.

It's fantastic, I'm no movie buff but you could really see the care taken in every scene, every shot, every word.

I love that it combines genres, even during its chaotic climax it maintains its balance. Like I said I'm no movie buff but I thought it was a masterpiece.

I'm downloading burning following the recommendations in here, if it's as good as you guys say I'm in for a treat

What a fantastic movie! It took me a long time to get motivation to watch it as I get too distracted with subtitles. Basically I have to look into the eyes when I'm listening to someone to not get distracted. Its the same thing when I'm watching something on the screen. But about a few minutes into the movie I forgot I was even reading the subtitles. But anyway what a feckin fantastic movie. The sudden change in mood in the middle was so brilliantly done. So subtle and brilliantly shot as well. Fully deserved the oscar.

This is something that went over my head. I get it's showing the poor serving the rich but why is he doing it within the narrative? What does he gain from this?

Finally watched this today. Great stuff. As mentioned earlier, don’t read up on it, just watch it with no prior information.

So happy it won best film, fantastic movie! Still think Old Boy is the best Korean movie I've seen but Parasite comes very close.
I think Oldboy is easily better (it is easily my favorite non-Hollywoodian movie and definitely in my top 10 if not top 5), but this one was very good too.

Memories of Murder from the same director is also very good.

I watched this today and feel a tad conflicted. The hype about this the past few months maybe had my expectations sky-high beforehand, which probably explains why I’m a little underwhelmed after finishing it. It’s a good film but, like others have suggested, I feel it lacks that ‘re-watch’ quality that make once-in-a-generation films so fantastic.

Also, I agree with those who say the film has no likeable characters at all, which results in the viewer not really caring where or how the plot progresses or concludes. The preposterous twists (at times) also lent themselves to suspending your disbelief too often, which took away from the social commentary/metaphors the director was trying to convey.

That is a very good point about there not being any likeable characters at all, but I wonder if that in a way lets you kind of coldly observe the goings on without any or much sentimentality, and therefore can see the social commentary/metaphors etc a little better?

I agree on the at times preposterous twists too, they definitely took me out of it a little, and maybe if they had been reined in slightly it would have been even better. I did really enjoy the film though and I will go back and see it again.

Just on the rewatchability of the film, Mark Kermode mentioned the other day that he'd seen it four times already, felt that it was a perfect film, and that apparently the film is going to be shown/released in a black and white version, which the director has said he feels it works better or really well. (I can't remember what he said exactly but it is from the Radio 5 Kermode and Mayo film show so I may listen back). Edit- I think he may have mentioned it on the 15 minute BBC news film review show.

Black and white version sounds interesting, but I bet that's on limited release only.

The over the topness is very characteristic of Korean cinema though, it wasn't forced I felt. But if you're not too familiar with Korean films, I can understand why it might have been surprising.

I didn't think it was forced, just some things were slightly preposterous, but yeah, I know what you mean. I have watched quite a few Korean films to know that they definitely can be over the top, although I am going to make a list of the highly recommended films that I haven't seen yet.

I just checked out this list of Korean films https://collider.com/best-south-korean-movies-parasite-bong-joon-ho/#the-chaser and was surprised to see I'd seen seven of them, and will check out more when I can. Do you have any films not mentioned here that you would recommend please?

Outlaws was really fun.
“The man standing next” is in theaters now and i thought it was excellent. It’s about the last days leading up to the assassination of President park chung hee, the most divisive president in korea’s history whom many consider a dictator. It’s set in 1979 and the main lead is the head of KCIA who ends up killing the president. I’m very critical of historically set Korean films and shows because they’re usually over the top and unrealistic. But this film really felt like 1979 in their dress, fashion, set design, and speech, and it’s very rare they get that right.

this is largely how i felt too. my expectations were very high, the first act set things up nicely, but i kinda felt let down by the end. i don't particularly think the social commentary was anything new really. it was still a very well done movie which i enjoyed a lot, i may have enjoyed it more if i had less expectations in the first place.

Unbelievable, turns out according to the President films should only win if they are American. What a cock!

Finally got around to watching it on a flight yesterday, having known nothing about it besides knowing it won a lot of awards.

In my opinion it was just a decent film. I wasn’t blown away by it really, but cinematography and all those more refined things that people usually look at in movies are often lost on me, so I’m not too bothered.

Did anyone else think the middle section was reminiscent of a really good episode of Inside Number 9?

I enjoyed it for the most part but the bubble burst with the climactic tonal shift and the resulting mindlessness.
The tone shifted, fittingly and intentionally, after the biblical flood. The fractures had to split and the pressure had to be released. Imo, it might've seemed underwhelming but only because the first two acts were so brilliantly executed.

Thanks for the recommendations, and I'll be adding these to the list. It's quite a long list at the moment, but it makes sense to watch these soon as I've just watched Parasite (twice now), so a good time to continue with the Korean theme.

Waiting for the @Mockney rantview.
I hacked his iCloud and stole his draft;
I wish I could say Parasite was more Jean Luc Godard than it is Jean Luc Picard, but the reality is it's as filthy as Jean Reno in Leon when he groomed a young Natalie Portman. The Joie de Vivre was drained from my soul as I watched the haphazardly portrayed, tired allegorical premise of Parasite insult not just my intelligence but also my six senses - the final one being my ability to see dead people. Such as the spirit of Luciano Salte, who revealed himself to me when the film got to the bit where it tried to make you feel bad for rich people. Which is bullshit because everyone knows that socialism is just a tramp's wet dream. 3/10 would not bang.
