He knows it needs ALL their people to fill the stadium

He must be mythed. All those years we've struggled, no trophies for a few years but sell out Old Trafford 3x over if possible.

City can't even fill a CL night, embarrasing.

I switched over from Liverpool/Milan and watched some of it, absolutely no atmosphere at all. It was like they were watching a funeral procession for ine of the Gallagher brothers.

Even at the end, little bit of clap and then the players walked off to the sound of wonderwall playing in an almost totally empty stadium.

Everything seems so contrived, even the stadium announcer sounds like he's got a gun to his head and is being forced to sound enthused by the whole thing.

They've been pretty much giving away tickets for 5-10 years.

To be fair to City, Liverpool used to get low attendances for even important CL games in the 2000s. They'd get the full house for the PL but CL games would be around 10k less.
But they are league champions, UCL finalists and multiple trophy winners in recent years.
If you can’t fill a stadium with that profile it shows what a plastic club you are

Not playing Devils Advocate but a lot of the older Utd fans have been saying the same. In terms of atmosphere, success is a double edged sword.

In reality where Utd are concerned, we’ve always had a huge worldwide support even in barren years. It makes no difference, Utd will always attract bigger support even if the atmosphere is sometimes muted.. we still fill our stadium

I think City's fanbase didn't grow for 3-4 years now at least but it's a combination of more factors: 1) no galactico signings with massive following 2) there are already many, many brands in football 3) not many tourist are excited about visiting Manchester.
Dont know the touristic visits to Manchester data but when they do come they usually go to Old Trafford and a lot of them. I've been there once and its a great city, dont know where does all that Manchester is this and that stuff come from.

Not sure if the snippet takes this out of context slightly (I'm sure it does), but yeah we got emails at work offering tickets for £20 for adults for the Leipzig game.

Unbelievable really. It wasn't long ago our tickets for the League Cup game sold out within about an 30 mins of Ronnie signing.

he's never seemed very happy at City to me, I think he's taken the offer because it was too good to refuse, i mean they essentially gave him everything he could ever wish for as a manager, and an open cheque book,
But he isn't stupid, he knows it's a completely soul-less enterprise. I reckon he wanted out a couple of seasons ago but for whatever reason they have him by the balls. I mean how many times has he mentioned leaving now to the press? (before backtracking in the very next interview)
It'll be very interesting to see what happens to City when he does leave, where do they go from there? they've had the best manager in the world for a long time now, I think it may be a bit of a reality check once he does leave, If the best manager and arguably one of the best teams in the world won't fill your stadium... what will?
They still won titles even with the likes of Pellegrini and Mancini.

Unless they get a Moyes type in, they'll still be competing until the owners disappear.

Who are you meaning with this?
United v West Ham has a sh!Tload of tickets for sale, and just in case you're meaning City, they're playing my boys Wycombe next Tuesday, and the prices are £10 - £12.50 for goodness sake

I doubt they drop at all. Think people expecting them to fall will get the reality check. Look at Chelsea, always there or there abouts really.

Their fanbase seems to grow everywhere except inside their ground. I see a hell of a lot of City shirts down here in the south west, particularly young kids. I was in London a few weeks back and I saw more City shirts than any London club (something that lot used to use as a negative against United for years). Quite a lot overseas too.

They still have some of the cheapest tickets in the league, and they seem to give batches of them away to schools and whatnot. It's bizarre that they can't get fans through the gate.

Yeah it's weird. On their forum you have some of them saying they got their tickets for £12.50-17.50 then others bemoaning being priced out of watching football even though I constantly hear their games being advertised on radio and usually with hefty discounts.

Other common excuses for last night include:
  • ticketing system
  • covid
  • apathy for CL
  • traffic/transport
  • time the game was on
  • the opposition ("Etihad would have been full if it was against PSG and Messi")

Having an open, blank cheque book is one of only two or Pep’s demands when it comes to managerial appointments.

The second is already having a very, very good squad

You're right (us being United) however I think they've opened more of the stadium capacity since tickets first went out.

I was enquiring about the Matchday VIP tickets for the Newcastle game and asked about West Ham and was told it was sold out as of that day. I don't think I've ever seen top tier of the SAF stand open for a R3 League cup game before!

Funny. I was just trying to find a clip of Karl Pilkington saying the exact same thing; The reason people typically think everything was better before, is that they were young then. And being young is good, being old is not that good.

I think a 40 or 50 year old is capable of acknowledging the difference between life in general and the match going experience.

You can’t expect that the 20/25 year olds who follow the team home and away today are going to have the same experience as the ones who did in the Maine Road days. The bigger the club is, the less important the fans will generally feel.

The players back then probably recognised these regular matchgoers by face and name (think they even mentioned something like that) whereas you can’t fool me into thinking these shiny new foreign exports who’ve come purely to further themselves / money really care. Same at United

I paid more for a ticket to a 4th division play off final at the old Wembley.

I think City shall offer fish and chips along with a free beer with each ticket.

I wish Wycombe had drawn United! Obviously for it being an epic meeting of two teams I've supported for 30 years, but also for the proper crowd.

United would get 50,000 even for Wycombe, whereas I'm guessing City may scrape 20,000, if we take a decent 2,000, which is a stretch for a club with about 3,000 season ticket holders, 180miles on a Tuesday night.

Strange mix of being pleased with a tenner entry for myself as a season ticket holder (at Wycombe), counter balanced with being annoyed that we'll probably only earn about 100k out of such a supposedly big draw!

True but that's exactly why you should change your expectations and emotional involvement. Treat it like a tv series. I love Succession but that doesn't mean I'm gonna stan Jeremy Strong on Twitter or care what happened to him this week. He's just a guy who's there to entertain me. And if he doesn't then I move to other things and my money move with me. And it should be like that with modern football players. You're not your football club.

I paid 1 pound to watch them in a Europa quarter finals tie. Regretted paying for it as they were basically giving them out outside the stadium.

I think FA should implement a rule of some kind that allows lower league clubs, especially below the Championship, to get a bigger piece of the pie when they're drawn away against big PL clubs in the early cup rounds.
