How do you come to this conclusion? Just because his automatic release clause was that amount, doesn't mean that Spurs bid that sum. Clubs sell sometimes sell players for less than their release clause ... for a whole variety of obvious possible reasons.

20.5m would have broken our record spending on a single player and been 4m more than we paid for Modric.

I strongly doubt that Spurs put in a bid anywhere close to 20.5m ... because there is no way that Spurs would have committed to spend so much on a 19 year-old CB. Levy quite simply would not have sanctioned it. Knowing Harry, he probably got Levy to agree to a "test the water" bid of around 12m.

However, I acknowledge that Man. Utd have a much bigger income and so are in better position to take such big gambles.

Spurs together with other clubs got permission to talk to the player because his buy-out clause was met. However, the bottom line is the player chose United. Anyway, I still think it was straight 16 million without any future add-ons.

You paid £16.5m for Modric who hadn't played outside of Croatia at the time and had no experience at highest level at the time, why wouldn't you pay thr exact same amount for an extremely talented defender with a solid Premier League season under his belt?
First, it's not the exact same amount - Jones is costing 4m more.

Second, Modric was 22, not 19, when he signed for Spurs and was a lot more proven than Jones is.

Third, Modric was an established star player for the Croatian senior team .... a team that had recently run rings around England and had done well at the subseqeunt Euro finals ... with Modric pulling most of the strings in both cases.

Jones has not even been capped yet at senior international level .... hell, he's only played 5 or 6 times at U-21 level.

Funnily if you would've signed Jones, you would've been giving reasoning just like this of why Jones is a terrific buy for you lot.

Secondly, why wouldn't Harry pay a good amount for a talent that he has described in his own word "future English captain" thus implying he's gonna be an excellent player in the future.

'Quite a gamble'.

If Spurs had signed him that would have 'What a buy! He's going to be the future England captain!'.

Who said Spurs "spoke to the player"?

Spurs put in a bid, yes. For how much we don't know, but I'd be amazed if Levy agreed to bid 20.5m including future possible add-ons ... or anything even close to that. It just wouldn't be sanctioned.

You do realise how silly that post looks. You're all over the place mate. The fee is 16million. The rest is pure speculation by the press looking for reasons into the delay.

You jest I presume.

If Spurs had broken their transfer record by spending 20.5m on a 19 year-old CB it would have been described by every Spurs fan as the biggest financial gamble in the club's entire history.

That doesn't mean the gamble wouldn't have paid off - or won't pay off for Man. Utd. But a big gamble it remains.

I love the way you keep pushing the 20.5m figure. You are just a WUM!! :smirk:

I like how GS keeps on using the 20.5M figure for him.

We'd have turned his head in a few years anyway had he gone to Spurs.

Modric is already talking in riddles about a move away.

The fee is about the same you paid for Darren Bent. Yeah.

Only because we haven't bid for him yet. If we do, his rhetoric will soon firm up.

Dalglish Getting Embarrassed By Fergie Again?
Dalglish Getting Embarrassed By Fergie Again?

“Keane is the hottest prospect in football right now,” Brian Clough said of Roy in his last season at Nottingham Forest. Jack Walker was trying to buy Blackburn success, something he would later go on to achieve, and Kenny Dalglish identified Keane as the man to take the club forward in 1993. Initially speaking to the player whilst under contract and behind the back of his club, Blackburn beat off interest from Arsenal, and went on to have a bid of £4m accepted.

It was Friday afternoon, Dalglish wanted the paperwork on the deal to go through, but there was no one still around in the Ewood Park offices so Keane couldn’t sign. No big deal, thought the Scot, it will wait until Monday.

However, Sir Alex Ferguson had just helped Manchester United win their first title in 26 years and was looking to take the team forward. Captain Bryan Robson was on his last legs and we would need someone else to fight our battles in the centre of the park. Why Fergie hadn’t spotted Keane before then is a puzzle but the manager got him on the phone on Sunday lunch time.

After establishing that nothing had been signed with Blackburn, Ferguson invited Keane to Manchester. The manager met Roy at the airport and drove him to his house where they played a game of snooker.

“I liked him straight away,” said Roy. “For a man managing Manchester United, he was unaffected, funny and reassuringly human. He was also clearly hungry for more trophies. There were a few obstacles to overcome before a deal could be done. We agreed that I would tell Dalglish our deal was off.”

Unsurprisingly, King Kenny wasn’t too pleased to hear that Sir Alex had snatched his star man from under his nose. In his autobiography, Keane reflected on that conversation:

“What the feck do you mean? We shook hands on a deal. You can’t back out now.”

“Look, I’m sorry, I really am,” I told him, “but I’ve got my future to think about, I’m entitled to that.”

“You’re entitled to nothing except the commitment you made to me on Friday.”

“I’m sorry, if you’d had the forms ready, I would have signed on Friday.”

“Nobody does this to me, nobody does this to Kenny Dalglish. You’re a wee bastard and you won’t get away with this.” Kenny wasn’t cool any longer.

I felt very uneasy about the situation. But here was Kenny Dalglish insisting that I honour a deal I hadn’t signed. The same Kenny Dalglish who’d spent several months “tapping” me up behind Brian Clough’s back. The more he swore at me, the less my conscience bothered me.

Dalglish wasn’t finished there though. The following day, 6.30 in the morning, the Scot was back on the phone:

You won’t get away with this,” he began. “Blackburn Rovers will sue you for every penny you’ve got.” He and Ferguson had never got on and this more than anything appeared to be bugging him. He called me names. He repeated that nobody “fecked” with Kenny Dalglish and “got away with it”. I told him I was going on holiday and that the matter was closed as far as I was concerned.

So, he didn’t sign for Arsenal, or Blackburn, because they’re shite. He signed for Man United because they’re fecking dynamite.

Imagine Dalglish’s frustration 18 years later, back in charge of Liverpool now, having just witnessed Ferguson lead United to a record 19th title, when he misses out on yet another great prospect. Phil Jones, the lad tipped to be future England captain, was favourite to sign for Liverpool. The papers claimed a deal would be done later that day, only for it to be reported that he was having a medical with United. Arsenal, Spurs and Liverpool were amongst the clubs that had bids accepted, yet Jones opted to sign for us. Arsenal even offered him better wages but he turned them down.

However, Blackburn’s owners have thrown a spanner in the works, having got wind of how highly rated this lad is. The £16.5m release clause in his contract has been activated, making it irrelevant how much money they want for him. This didn’t stop Liverpool bidding £22m for the player who has already turned them down in favour of United yesterday.

The player’s agent has told the papers that the deal with United is still on, with it set to be announced today, as this is where the player wants to go. The Venky’s were under the impression the release clause meant clubs were allowed to talk to the player which is why Dalglish, in his desperation, offered £6m more.

As if losing out on the player at the last minute wasn’t embarrassing enough for Liverpool, but throwing money at the situation in the hope that it will get them what they want. Jones has made it clear he wants to play for United, not Liverpool, yet here they are, offering £6m above the release clause, with Dalglish clearly not happy about being done by Fergie again.

Phil Jones’ agent has confirmed that the deal is done and should be announced soon, as the release clause can’t be challenged by the Blackburn owners. The agent confirmed that Jones had met with all four clubs who had offered the release clause and chose United.

Quotes were attributed to Jones, who is set to play alongside our Chris Smalling in today’s England U-21 game against Spain, which suggested if he wanted to continue winning nothing in his career, he would have stayed at Blackburn.

He didn’t sign for Arsenal, or the scousers because they’re shite. He signed for Man United because they’re fecking dynamite.

 I enjoyed this article

Hilarious

That type of paranoia is something which is in the DNA of everybody concerned with Liverpool football club. Kenny and Rafa both displayed it. The window-lickers on RAWK have it in abundance, Gerrard and Fowler with their five fingered signs....

I'm hearing pretty strong rumours tonight Modric is being lined up as a replacement for Nasri by Arsenal.

That figure is being reported in many places ... how do you know it's not correct?

Because his agent said his 16Million buy-out clause was met. I suppose his agent is in the best position to know these facts.

Because the buy out clause was 16million and those that have spouted 20.5million appear to be basing their facts on the ESPN story. In fact, many of the reports even use the same dialogue.

I will believe whatever figure MUFC announces.

Is anyone seriously giving a shit if we pay 16 or 20m? Its always a gamble, even with senior players, but also worth it. I dont think anyone regrets paying 12m for Ronaldo or 28m on Rooney. So if this Jones is a top talent, lets get him, end of story

How was Ronaldo a gamble? And Anderson's proven to be a gamble gone horribly wrong.

Think you're getting OTT there, he hasn't gone horribly wrong. Has showed promise but has been very unlucky with Injuries so far here, I think he's gonna have a great next season for us. Some of his performances at OT this season were excellent.

How was Ronaldo a gamble? And Anderson's proven to be a gamble gone horribly wrong.

Because he was a one trick pony with potential when he arrived at United. Anderson has been an integral part of United's success over the last few years. He's still only 22, and I'm sure United would make money if he was to be transferred.

And Anderson's proven to be a gamble gone horribly wrong.

Three league championships and a Champions League, bitch!

The question is: was the agent referring just to the base-line fee, or the total possible fee including future potential add-ons?

You've no solid reason to assume that 20.5m is a WUM figure and not the actual truth.

In any case, the signing has not gone through yet ... so I imagine that most of the details will emerge in the wash.

I would say £12.5m for a player of talent like his wasn't a gamble. He was always going to be brilliant.

You lot spent the similar amount on Reyes who was also thought to be a great talent, that didn't work out well did it?

Buying youngsters from a Foreign League is always a gamble.

How was Ronaldo a gamble? And Anderson's proven to be a gamble gone horribly wrong.

How was ronaldo not a gamble? 12 or so million (which at that time was a decent bit of money) for an 18 year is a fair bit. You know he wasn't world player of the year winner at 18 right?

And the Anderson bit is a ridiculous statement really. Nani only became the best of a player he is a year and a half back. And he's a year older than Anderson whose gone through a number of injury set backs. This past season at home Anderson was excellent. He converts his away form into something similar and hell be a huge olayer for us. This notion that all 23 odd year old players must be the finished article is really bizarre

Everyone (no doubt including you) thought he was shit for the first two seasons!

Yeah, his start at United was hardly great and the media slated him. Took him a while to come good - the talent was always there but it was by no means obvious he would become anywhere near as good as what he did.

Everyone (no doubt including you) thought he was shit for the first two seasons!

I did not think he was shit for two seasons. He was hugely talented, with a little bit of a lacking end product that was bound to come with time. Did anyone think he was shit?

Indeed. But I just thought with Ronaldo that the chances of him failing were low given his exceptional ability. Once he settled into the country, there was no doubt at all.

You've heard this as well? OMG!

What's more I'm also hearing:

Fabregas to Man. Utd.
Sandro to Arsenal (to be replaced by Poulsen)
Bale to Man. City (to be replaced by N'Zogbia)

I did not think he was shit for two seasons. He was hugely talented, with a little bit of a lacking end product that was bound to come with time. Did anyone think he was shit?

No, only the media, rival fans, some of our own fans and probably his mum.

But Fergie once said he'd work on the teamwork and crossing, and funnily enough that's when Ronnie started paying off. Then he got a big ego, forgot all his earlier training and luckily for us decided to bang in 40-odd goals
