I disagree. I think he is a rubbish manager and was lucky to get as far as he did.

I also don't think he was a decent guy. He came across as a bit of a twat in his interviews. Always complaining, never punished.

Ridiculous timing and poor decision in general.

They came up with a weak squad, signed a few bosmans, are still in with a fighting chance with of staying up with no time for a new manager to really change anything.

feck off back to obscurity where you belong Reading.
And take Biscuit with you!

Someone said on Twitter that if Reading were 6th in the Championship right now, he wouldn't have been sacked.

That said, it must be maddening for Reading fans to witness what they have this year. They were defensively horrific before McDermott seemed to sort it out to some extent, and now they're back to being porous to say the least.

This doesn't appear to be based solely on results, but the manner in which they've got them.
They've barely had any investment. They invested to get relegated. Job done.

I for one will not miss his post-match interviews. Horribly depressing bloke.

It depends who they appoint now, if they get Adkins I think it was a waste of time.

That's harsh, whilst he got the job maybe somewhat luckily after the FA cup win at Liverpool he really did steady the ship after Brendan Rodgers did an awful job there. He gave them stability and slowly got them back in to the premier league where they might of struggled but he was hardly given much to spend to help them stay up. The jump is much bigger than it seems in terms of quality and they were always going to be in danger of going down.

I never get why teams sack a manager this late, what's the new 1 really going to do? He's got the same players who are used to playing McDermott's way so it will be hard to change it all and he can't bring anyone in. It's also unfair on the sacked manager, he got them there and I doubt many thought he'd do better, he deserved the season and a chance to bring them back up if they go down.

I don't think he overly complained either, he's not as bad as the likes of Hughes or O'Neill are for example, he seems to only complain when he has a point or to divert attention from his players, which most managers do.

Yeah, the timing is bad regardless. But I guess Reading want to profit off of this whole "new manager syndrome" and get a new lease of life before the end of the season.

In fairness, the food in the Fat Duck has suffered since he's been Reading manager.

Their next two games are United and Arsenal, both away. The way we've been playing, they might fancy something here, but there's realistically no more than 1/6 from the next two games, maybe 3 if there's a big shock. They're not going to have enough, given they're still to host City and a few other decent sides.

This, basically.

Can't say I didn't see it coming, but I can't see what else he could have doen with the resources available to him. Oh well, 3 points in the bag for us.

I never warmed to him. I just didn't like his face, or his posture, and its very rare I dislike anyone for their face or posture so his face and posture must be pretty poor.

Every time I heard him speak I got the feeling he had about 15 minutes to live.

Apparently Di Canio was at their game at the weekend and is the favourite to take over. That'd be a huge gamble.

Am I paranoid or does this always happen when a team is about to play us?

He seems a very nice guy, how people can call him a cnut is beyond me. Is there anyone out there that you some of twats won't hate for no good reason?

It's harsh but they are going down no matter what, Di Canio will be entertaining but also the board will want him to grow into the job and get ready for a promotion push next season.

If they see no future with McDermott as manager it makes sense to do it now.

Di Matteo will be a good appointment.
McDermott did a good job and over achieved to some point but they are now joint bottom of the league and lost at home to Villa at the weekend you can't blame them for changing it up for the back end of the season, he was taking them down for sure.

Big step down for Di Matteo. He deserves a better club than reading after winning the champions league....

Feel sorry for the bloke but i don't know why anyone is surprised by it. 10 games to go, in a relegation battle and likely to be relegated so to try and get a new manager to rejuvenate the side into one last push isn't anything far fetched.

About Mcdermott himself; He always striked me as a bit of a cock in interviews. Had an arrogant persona that you're used to seeing in managers at the top of the league but not at the bottom.

Bizarre decision given Reading over achieved massively to get in the premier, and have comfortably the worst squad in the division. Three teams have to go down and Reading have always been favourites, they'd have been well placed to come back up under McDermott though.

I guess if they've actually got someone lined up it might not affect them too badly, but if they haven't got an instant replacement it could lead to a Terry Connor or Brian Laws type appointment which would probably wreck their chances of promotion next season as well.

Oh great, just before we play them, new manager effect in full force.
People always say this but when was the last time we had a problem facing a team with a new manager? We certainly had no issues turning over QPR under Redknapp (we were their first match right?)

Anyway, stupid sacking by Reading. They wont stay up even with a new manager, and its dumb to expect to stay up first season after promotion.

I dont really understand the sacking at this point in time to be honest. They should have done it earlier. Maybe 7-8 games ago? I mean they were still in the same boat. Now it might take a game or two just to accustomed to the new manager. I thought even QPR sacked Hughes late. They took a few games to get used to a different system and now they are playing better or at least getting the results.

I wonder just how long Martin O'Neil can last at the Stadium of Shite...fans are getting restless with growing numbers calling for his head.

Poor performances coupled with poor crowds and now poor financial results showing operating losses of £26.9m, from a turnover of £78m that does not include their summer signings of Fletcher (£12m), Johnson (£10m) and the January incomings; Graham (£5m) and N’Diaye (£4.5m) will only increase the pressue on O'Neil who really hasn't moved the club forward at all.

Couldn't care less.
They're stupid if they want rid of him now, at least wait until the end of the season. Unless they think they'll have the power of new manager syndrome by the time we play them.

They probably used the extra TV money to fund the jan signings.

Bruce isnt the greatest manager.. but he took over when they were relegation threatened.. finished 17th.. then 14th and then 10th.. Bruce wasnt helped by his club selling players for big money.. or by the Gyan fiasco..

Its fine sacking a manger after he has a poor spell, which he did.. but the way their fans turned on him in the space of 3 months was crazy.. and they replaced him with Martin O'Neill.

They deserve the boring football they are getting..

I remember when they had signed Welbeck on loan.. they were complaining about Waghorn not getting game time and how he was a better player

At the time Waghorn was off the back of a promising season in the Championship whereas Welbeck had had an underwhelming spell at Preston. (I saw him in the flesh at SJP that season, and he was terrible)

It's no surprise they would have preferred (at the time) to stick with their own player who was a local lad.

Personally I hate the principal of NUFC ever loaning young players from other clubs. Not only the principal of it actually, but purely logistically its not an effective way to develop as a club.

Easy to see why though, should have been an easy three points against the league leaders today.
