He wanted a transfer away, and a lot of fans had a hard time dealing with it, like every set of fans would have if a young talented player wants to leave for a rival.

Why don't you tell us how the all forgiving Arsenal fans reacted when van Persie and later on Sanchez left for Man United?
Notice how I didn't criticize the fans even a single time. Your defense of Liverpool hierarchy's treatment of Sterling along with a Liverpool player and an ex-player's treatment of Sterling is so desperate & pathetic that you can't help but resort to shamelessly strawmanning.

The way your club treated Sterling was an absolute disgrace and there was a clear double standard. Their animosity towards him was personal.

Just a little spat. Happens all the time in training. Don't even think it had to be made public by Southgate like Rio said A talking to would have done. Get Sterling to apologise like he did and move on.

Desperate defense?? I never defended Carragher.. And you didn't respond to my comment on why it WAS unproffesional from Sterling..

What did the club do wrong?

Oh.. And how about this?

Southgate has overreacted

Remember when Schmeichel and Keane got drunk and started fighting with Nicky Butt refereeing? That got leaked to the media as well but SAF kept it in house, disciplined them and moved on. Gaz has made a meal of it.

Just spoke to one of the lads who does media for England. Apparently, Gomez had Sterling by the throat, butted him, kicked him in the bollocks and smashed Sterlings head against a wall.

The FA had a look at VAR and banned Sterling for 2 games.

Agreed. Seem's a very heavy-handed way to treat one of his best players.

What's even more sickening is that the bashing of Sterling was started by his own club when he was a Liverpool player. Liverpool- his own club who are meant to be protecting him from abuse- kept leaking negative stories about him to gain leverage in contract negotiations.

The Liverpool mouth pieces like Carragher and Gerrard took turns bashing him in the media. This was all back in 2014 & 2015 when he was still a Liverpool player. They blamed him- a 20 year old kid- for "not winning trophies" for Liverpool, for "taking on Liverpool football club", for being "embarrassing", for making them feel "sick" and that Sterling "should keep his mouth shut". This was all Carragher. And then Gerrard piled on, saying that Sterling's career could go downhill and that he was the opposite of Jordan Henderson. Jordan was a "professional" but Sterling was not and a multitude of other insults.

What did Sterling actually do to get the entire club getting so personal in their insults to Sterling? He wanted to leave. That's his crime. Something many Liverpool players did. Suarez openly refused to train, was a racist towards Evra, wanted to leave, was biting opponents. Throughout all if that he had the full backing of Liverpool FC, with the entire squad including Carragher wearing a shirt with Suarez's name on the back to support his racism. Coutinho wanted to leave and was upset with the club, he even left half way through the season because he couldn't wait to pack his bags.

Sterling was a young black kid who knew what he wanted and that was something unacceptable to Liverpool FC.
He disrepected the club and was totally ungrateful for everything we did for him.

We gave him his chance as a kid and made him into the player he was. We even gave him special privileges of giving him a week off in the middle of the season when he went to Jamaica for a holiday when we were playing Sunderland, which is unheard of. We treated him with kid gloves.

We then offered him a new contract worth £100,000 a week for a 19 year old.

Firstly he turned it down, pretending he wanted to wait till the summer, but things turned on its head when he made an unsanctioned interview with the BBC basically touting himself for a move elsewhere. He then did the same thing in an interview whilst away with England.

So youve got this 19 year old, who was given his big chance, offered a lucrative contract and he starts touting himself for sale. A 19 year old. This was all long before City came in for him. He also refused to go on preseason tour pretending he was ill.

It was when he began touting himself for sale when things turned on him.

Imagine if you give Martinelli his big break, he has a good season with you this season, you reward him with a new lucrative contract and then he starts setting up interviews offering himself up for a move away from Arsenal aged 19. Or for Man Utd fans imagine if Rashford began pushing for a move because he thought hes bigger than Man Utd, when he was 19. And thats also key - that he was aged 19.

There are ways to move and the way Raheem disrepected the club repeatedly- long before Citys offer came in, was what riled the fans.

You ever been clawed on the face? It’s a legitimate move if you want to hurt someone and it hurts.
There are no “mens moves and women's moves” if you’re looking to hurt someone.
Get off it, no man scratches another if you’re not an absolute wuss. If Sterling scratched me like that I would have chinned him, and any other man with a pair would have done the same.
If you’re looking to intimidate a group or somebody, you don’t go over and scratch the biggest fella on the cheek, you chin him. End off

Raheem Sterling’s confrontation with Joe Gomez lasted only 10 to 15 seconds according to those present, yet the fallout from it will run significantly longer for England, Gareth Southgate and the FA.

The incident, which led to Sterling being dropped for the game against Montenegro on Thursday evening, took place at about 12.30pm on Monday at St George’s Park.

Gomez was in the canteen shaking everyone’s hand and then reached Sterling, who was sitting down. Sterling snapped and responded, “So you think you’re the big man?”, stood up and tried to get Gomez in a headlock, knocking food over from the table. “It was a pretty full-on thing and food went everywhere,” said one source. “Sterling behaved like a bit of a child.”

Another source said: “It was all out of the blue, ‘Woah, what the hell has happened here?’. Everyone was just a bit shocked.”

The roots of Monday’s incident lie in Sunday’s Premier League game between Manchester City and Liverpool. Sterling was goaded by the Anfield crowd and subjected to chants of “one greedy bastard” about his 2015 transfer from Liverpool to City.

Traditionally, Sterling has under-performed in that fixture and has been substituted early three out of four times before Sunday. But this time, Sterling was City’s best player in the 3-1 defeat, and was thought to have been devastated by the outcome. Sterling tussled with Gomez late on during the game and appeared to tread on Virgil van Dijk towards the end.

Although Sterling and Gomez made up after the final whistle on Sunday, images of Gomez pushing Sterling widely circulated online on Sunday evening, giving rise to a feeling that Gomez had “embarrassed” Sterling. So it was an emotional Sterling who arrived at St George’s Park on Monday morning. Gomez was the first of the Liverpool players to arrive, before Trent Alexander-Arnold or Jordan Henderson.

Gomez had initially thought Sterling was joking, and a handful of team-mates laughed at the City player’s initial comment. But when it became clear that Sterling was serious, Gomez moved backwards and the pair had to be separated by concerned team-mates.

Gomez is thought to have been very upset by the incident. The softly-spoken defender does not like confrontation and did not think there would be any issue with Sterling following their embrace after Sunday’s match. But he decided, in the words of one source, to “take the moral high ground” in the interests of “what is best for the team”.

Liverpool are also thought to be angry that Gomez has been put in this situation through no fault of his own. The 22-year-old was seen to have a scratch under his right eye when pictured at training on Tuesday morning.

While Sterling’s behaviour has surprised some sources, there is also a view from those who know him well that he is more competitive and driven than many realise. And that defeats as important as Sunday night matter more to him than they might do to other players.

It is also not the first time Sterling and Gomez have clashed on England duty. This is a story Southgate told after England played Kosovo in Southampton in September.

“Raheem will give himself every chance, because he’s got the drive, he’s got the professionalism, he’s got the ability, he’s strong, he’s physically and mentally strong for such a small-statured lad,” Southgate said. “It was hysterical the other day, he and [Joe] Gomez had a shoulder-to-shoulder moment. And of course, they were bantering about it for the rest of the week.”

Southgate was not amused by their latest confrontation and there is also frustration and disappointment among FA officials that the incident has overshadowed an incredible amount of hard work and planning that has gone into preparing for the celebrations of England’s 1,000th game.

Sterling was initially sent home by Southgate on Monday night and it took an intervention from England’s senior players to change the manager’s mind, with him allowing Sterling back into the squad as long as he apologised to Gomez.

Sterling was on the way out of St George’s Park when his car turned around and he went back, waiting for Southgate and the senior players to decide his fate. Sterling apologised to Gomez and Southgate convened an emergency team meeting at 9pm, when the manager confirmed Sterling’s suspension for Thursday night’s game with Montenegro.

That decision, along with the public announcement at 11pm confirming Sterling’s dropping from the Montenegro game, has sparked anger from those who work closely with the player. There is a sense from one source who knows Sterling well that the FA has overreacted to the incident, and that rather than doing the right thing, it has prioritised being seen to do the right thing.

“Back in the day, you were always having training ground bust-ups,” said one source close to the squad.

“That was part and parcel of the culture. Some managers would step in, some managers would let it go. I’ve never known something happen for 10 to 15 seconds and one lad gets kicked out. It makes me think this is all about the PR for Southgate.”

The former England defender Rio Ferdinand also said that the incident could have been “handled better” and that confrontations on international duty are more common than might be expected. Although one source pointed out that the Manchester United and Chelsea players managed to play for England days after the 2008 Champions League final without club rivalries spilling over into confrontation.

After Southgate decided to send Sterling home, it took lobbying from the team’s leadership group, including Henderson, to change the manager’s mind, and decide that an apology accepted by Gomez would be enough for Sterling to rejoin the squad.

“Raheem had to go calm down, then he realised what he had done was wrong, and he apologised profusely,” said one source. “Not straightway but pretty quickly. He grovelled all day. It’s done, finished. A line was drawn through it, to focus on the game on Thursday.”

There was no immediate statement from the FA, not until 11pm on Monday night. But they knew how serious an issue it would be. The FA technical director Les Reed was with associates at Twickenham for the Leaders Sport Business Summit but he had to withdraw from a planned dinner, saying that his phone would be ringing the whole evening, so he should not come to the meal.

But there is still a view that the FA’s suspension of Sterling, and the public announcement of it, has made this a bigger issue than it otherwise would have been. “It all seems overblown,” one Premier League sporting director told The Athletic.

“I would expect my manager to sit them down, keep it in-house. Instead, Southgate has given a lot of oxygen to what sounds like a 10-second event.”

How could Liverpool expect a player who walked out on QPR at 16 for a better team would do the same thing again?

Liverpool manager/club made his contract negotiations public IIRC, don't paint as if the club was innocent party here. Some of the interviews made him look like a money grabber, Rodgers even admitted he delayed the contract negotiations as much as possible.

It was Rodgers who talked about contract in public, Sterling later gave interview to defend himself.

Sterling was offered what Rodgers described as "an incredible deal" in February 2015 as talks stalled on a new contract at Anfield. Sterling later gave an unsanctioned interview to the BBC, claiming he wasn't a "money-grabbing 20-year-old" before leaving a few months later.

I might have a smigin of empathy for you if he'd gone to City and an Adebayor-esque trajectory since. As it happens he's gone there and improved massively as a player to establish himself as one of the best forwards in the world. He also got paid a lot more. At the time Liverpool were on the fringes of the elite and couldn't win a trophy. Sterling has won 5 trophies at City since being there while Liverpool have 1. Hard to question his judgement here, solitary short break in Jamaica or no.

No he has not. It's a very mild reaction by Southgate.
You are only a few days on international duty. The team can not waste that time on players who do not know how to behave.

Do not get fooled by all the ex-England players that are saying it's a non-issue. That might be one of the reasons why England have constantly underachieved for 50 years.

Very poorly handled by Southgate. The stick Sterling gets the next time he goes to Anfield will be off the scale.

Indeed. Rio's time with England was one when club based cliques divided the camp, funnily enough the team often played like strangers too.

Did anyone listen to the 5 live footy podcast about this? That "sport psychologist" they called has to be some kind of joke. Reminded me very much of the FoxNews health care A-team with the nonsense he spouted. Or maybe it was just Southgate with a disguised voice given how much in love that "psychologist" appears to be with the man.

What happened after doesnt make any difference. If you acted like a douche then people will see that you are a douche.

Bigger players than Sterling have left our club, Torres, Alonso, Suarez, but the way Sterling did it was out of order.

And in terms of being elite and winning trophys you guys are struggling right now, but that doesnt mean a teenager should act like hes bigger than Manchester United. I wonder how youd feel if Mason Greenwood has a great season and this time next year, refuses a new contract as he thinks he bigger than Manchester United and doing it openly in public, touting himself for sale in private interviews.

Were not talking about the likes of Hazard moving onto Real Madrid or say Sanchez moving to you, but a teenager thinking hes bigger than Man United. The fact that you guys are not at the top of the food chain right now is irrelevant. Its still Manchester United.

How ungrateful would you find Greenwood in that situation? And its not just a case that someone came in for a phenomenal playing Greenwood and then he moves, but the fact that that he was pushing himself out the door long before that.

I wonder how disrespectful youd find that towards Manchester United.

England and united are apples and oranges. Back when united and Liverpool had players on England they never socialized and hated each other and it showed on the pitch. Southgate did the right thing in not letting that happen to this team. It looks like he doesn’t want want club rivalries get in the way of team unity. I can’t see how anyone cannot see that unless it’s just bias against the Liverpool player from posters on this site. If it was the other way around Southgate would be lauded for his principles.

Indeed, I feel if it had been a United player he'd done that to then the reaction on here would be a lot different.

A nothing story tbh.

As usual SSN goes totally OTT on anything England.

I just turn off SSN when this kind of crap flares up, I mean how many different people's opinions do you need on one nothing story.

Think you're being harsh on Gomez there. After all, his team did score 5 goals against Arsenal when he started.

It doesnt even compare to ANYONE else who has ever left ANY club. Your pundits (Who have all the air time) absolutely crucified him, it started May 2015, go check Thompson and his comments, Lawrenson, Aldridge etc... They all to a man castigated him in the media - Told everyone he was rubbish, greedy, Ibe is better etc etc, which was gleefully taken up by the national press and they spent two years hounding him over absolutely anything. Your club, your hate filled club started all of that - Because he left? Jeez.

Carragher corrected himself publicly a couple of times since.. And Gerrard was right. It was unproffesional from Sterling. He refused to go on preseason tour with Liverpool when he was a Liverpool player, and phoned himself in sick after that. How would you describe that?

And why has it any importance, that Sterling is black?! And what has Suarez and Coutinho to do with this? Are you suggesting it's a racism thing? Of course it wasn't.. He wanted a transfer away, and a lot of fans had a hard time dealing with it, like every set of fans would have if a young talented player wants to leave for a rival.

Why don't you tell us how the all forgiving Arsenal fans reacted when van Persie and later on Sanchez left for Man United?
VVD did the same sort of thing to southampton.

Your club is shit, the racism, the bus smashing, the cheating, the spying/stealing info, anti-jewish Salah, Groballar taking bungs, heysel, biting, drugs goal-celebrating, the fecking moaning. I have never seen a club get away with so much and be 'sponsored' by the media desperate for a big club bringing in the clicks.

You might win the title this year, and Pgmol/PL will benefit from the massive global sales of their product if you do. But everyone knows how it happened.
