It's pretty clear the situation now - Madrid want as much as they can get, we want to pay as little as we can.

Varane is ready to leave and waiting for the deal to get done, I can't see him changing his mind now unless the deal fails.

Madrid can't afford to say "ok we keep you 1 more year and let you walk for free"

Isn't that basically every transfer ever? Until that bit gets agreed the rest is irrelevant, and nobody seems to know whether it will be agreed.
That's the last part to be done usually and yes deals can obviously fall apart at that stage.

However, terms have been agreed with the player and Real are resigned to selling this Summer by all accounts.

If, as has been reported, the clubs aren't too far apart in valuation and terms are agreed with the player it just a case of hammering out the structure of the deal. Most reports are saying it'll get done for around €50-60m.

I'm quite surprised by the lack of English reports on this. There only seems to be Luckhurst mentioning it? Now, I'm not saying it's a red flag or anything and I trust the moon system with all of my being, as anyone should. I'm just pointing it out.
It is a bit interesting that almost all the noise is on Madrid's side. I think it maybe shows that they're the party who are pushing harder for this? Let's be real, they need as big a fee as they can drum - it wouldn't surprise me to see them in the front seat for getting this dealt with.

Yeah agree. Called it from the off that Madrid won’t wilt and accept 50 mill Euro’s straight away though.

We need to be careful here, he’s obviously going to be leaving, if we dither over a few million euros the likes of Chelsea might come sniffing and we can afford to miss out on this signing if we want to challenge (imo.)

I’d say that’s how it usually works.
Except top clubs are not always willing to sell one of their best players. Usually players like Varane don’t get put on the market, but Madrid are in a dire financial position and need the money. I’d say it’s a pretty rare situation really.

Do they need the money? They don't seem to have spent anything since the Hazard summer.

My bad.

Its probably thought it was 4 because I've willed him to take Phil Jones number.

I really hope we are setting a date, reminding them that we will pursue alternatives after this date and that they risk getting nothing for him as unlikely anyone else will come in this late. In the past we have had this horrible tactic where we take too long seeing if they will drop the price, don't move on to alternatives and get stuck looking stupid, we need to be firm and have clear contingency plans and cut off dates.

Usually they'd tell us to get stuffed, but they can't this time.

That's why we can be patient and Madrid will have to give in more to our terms eventually.

They need the money, they don't want an unhappy player there for a year that will then leave for nothing.

We've unsettled him, we will give them a fair price but won't be overpaying.

I just got off the phone with a member of the Martinique delegation that confirmed to me under the promise of absolute secrecy that Manchester United will make their official bid for Raphael Varane on Friday 23.07.2021. According to the member he also occasionally uses paracetamol and eats apples, but hopefully that won't be an issue for the medicals.

Update hot of the press from the massively reliable Daily & Sunday Express Online,

'Utd deal for Varane may collapse in new Real Madrid Twist'

That means its definitely not happening now, these guys are connected and never get anything wrong....................:houllier::houllier::houllier:

Isn't Martial's family also from Martinique, any news on him?

Have you been following United for the past 10 years?

No tweets since the morning. This has absolutely nothing to report on now except Madrid agreeing to our bid and then both clubs to close the deal. I don’t think this will drag too much longer as they want their cash as soon as possible and Ole wants him in for preseason training quickly

Could just be that we obviously want him and are in for him, and that it is all down to what Madrid and Varane do.

I am not saying Chelsea are remotely in for Varane, but when a long drawn out negotiation for a top player starts to stall….that signals swoop time.

I can't think of another major club that needs a starting XI CB as much as United. (Except Madrid if they sell Varane, which is why i'm sure they'll eventually pay up on a new deal rather than enter the market)

A lot may want Varane.. but enough to commit a large chunk of their transfer budget on him? Who else needs him that badly?

His wage demands are not going to work well with Chelsea considering the main target we are chasing.

I think Tuchel wants more attackers anyway. He played a very pragmatic brand of football and won the CL but he's an attacking coach and wants his side to score goals.
