@Dirty Schwein: for the genre list, I'm kinda having trouble imaging where most films that usually top critics' lists would fit in. Or from my own perspective, take (somewhat randomly) Citizen Kane, The Third Man, Casablanca, The Maltese Falcon, Apocalypse Now, The Usual Suspects, Glengarry Glen Ross - are they all dramas? Maybe The Third Man and The Maltese Falcon are thrillers? Maybe Apocalypse Now is adventure? But that's not where people would think of it, I think. Not sure how to do that better; maybe the drama category could be split up? There might also be a pre-60s category, otherwise I think those films will get barely any mention.

In the meantime:

1. Raiders of the Lost Ark
2. Terminator 2
3. Die Hard
4. Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon
5. Mad Max: Fury Road

I'm not very happy with that list (too recent, too much influenced by others), but I've taken too much time on it already...
I’m struggling with war movies: Saving Private Ryan, Lawrence of Arabia, etc.

I'm going to be a twat and name not English films for this entire thing

1. Seven Samurai
2. Kagemusha
3. Exiled
4. Violent Cop
5. The Killer

P.s. I'm defining action as films with lots of violent scenes which I think is par for the course for any action film. Movies with swords tend to be different to guns but it's action all the same.

Infernal Affairs?

Love the idea so thanks for creating the thread. But I also believe decades would be a better way. I really struggle with certain movies which could be placed into multiple genres. With decades there's no wriggle room and everything is clear.
However, here is my first attempt:

1. Apocalypse Now
2. A Man Escaped
3. The Battle of Algiers
4. Lawrence of Arabia
5. Mad Max Fury Road

Love an old school cheesy action movie.

1. Terminator 2
2. Saving Private Ryan
3. Robocop
4. Starship Troopers
5. The Rock

1. Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon
2. The Dark Knight
3. Battle Royale
4. Terminator 2
5. Ong Bak

5 for alot of those categories is going to be so hard. I can guarantee others will come to mind.

Cracking idea though.

I'm wondering if I've put LOTR too low. Problem is I have a tough time recalling the the movies.

There's a Fantasy vote coming up though; plenty of opportunity to put LotR first there (and second, and third).

Oh darn. I was wondering what counts as adventure and confused to not see LOTR here

Godfather definitely a drama. Not an action or adventure film.
With the current list, yes, but my comment was that the vast majority of most critically acclaimed films might end up in the drama category - which effectively will skew the vote towards the other categories. (Meaning that films from those others categories might end up higher up in the vote than they would have been if Drama were split up.)

Is there a way to add a poll for for genre Vs decades?

I don't want that debate to take over the thread... Maybe if someone adds the poll we can then decide in 24 hours time?

If genre wins we carry on... If decades wins, we re-start next week?

The potential problem with decades is made well by this post from @VorZakone

I think there have been plenty of good/great releases since the 2010s, but it's still a solid point.

I guess we put them where we see fit. I think a lot of those will go into drama and some into thriller. As with any of these types of things, there's never a "perfect" way to do it.
Should be by decade.
I asked for a poll. Admins didn't listen!
I’m struggling with war movies: Saving Private Ryan, Lawrence of Arabia, etc.
I would classify them into action, drama or thriller. They're quite diverse.

But with decades I bet there would be other issues that crop up. Realistically, we would merge everything before the 50s into one category... but if someone is a big fan of let's say 40s films, it becomes unfair to them.
1. Top Gun Maverick
2. The Great Escape
3. Casino
4. Con Air
5. Jaws

I have changed this so many time. I could have done a 10 and still not been happy.
I knew I always liked you.
Or any crime movies, like The Godfather, Casino, Goodfellas, etc. All drama or thriller again?
Godfather is drama, MAYBE falls into thriller. But yeah, they can go into either.
Haven't seen it I'm afraid. Any good?
Infernal Affairs is brilliant. One of my favourite ever films.
So Con Air is the joke suggestion, right? Like Boaty McBoatface or Lord Buckethead
You helped with the gaming one so I like you... but if I saw you outside Weatherspoons on a Friday night... I might deck you. Just saying.

I agree.
1. Lord of the Rings 3

5. Leon

Dont worry, LOTD, Matrix and Terminator will have other opportunities. Throw Con Air into number 1. For me please?

Very good point.

Could you add a pre-60s category? Or ideally one for 40s+50s and one for pre-40s, but maybe that's too specific. So far, hardly any pre-60s films have been mentioned in this thread, so I think it's worth including something to let those films get their due as well.

But on the other hand, if they're not getting mentioned then having a sub category would be helping through films people just don't rate as much?

HOW DO WE ADD A POLL?

Or people just don't think about as much. Recency bias - I can see it in my own thoughts as well. Films I've seen in the last decade or so come to mind much more easily than films I saw 20-30 years ago.
