Should we renew De Gea's contract?

2 years ago we would all agree that De Gea was our most consistent player, even a debate to call him our all time best, at the level of Schmeichel and Van der Sar was in place. He was worldclass, consistent, not good at distribution but amazing at shot saving.

Now the situation is completely different, his form has fell from a cliff. Crystal Palace second goal today it's completely on him, it's not a nasty mistake like the other ones he made last season but it shows that his bad form continues. Mistakes have been a constant in the last two years, this is not a bad form patch this is De Gea's current level.

More worriying is that he has made nasty mistakes specially on important games, against Arsenal, Chelsea, City, Barcelona...in all those games he gifted them a goal.

In my opinion he is not a top GK anymore, he is not even a regular keeper, I would very much preffer an average keeper than current De Gea capable of one great save one minute and a major feck up the next one.

Do you have faith in him regaining his form? The way I see it, appart from the sentimentalism, he is another Alexis Sanchez case, but with De Gea we can get rid of him at the end of the season.

So with his contract expiring next summer the question is should we renew him? we are talking about the already best paid GK in the world who, if reports are true, is asking for his wages to be doubled.

Compilation of some of De Gea's mistakes in the last 18 months:

In my opinion he hasn't been the same since he let in that Ronaldo goal at the WC.

Certainly in the DDG of the past 2 season isnt worth the amount of £££ / week that has been reported.

Might be time to move on.

Agree, I think the awful world cup he had has mentally affected him permanently, he hasn't recovered from that and has continued to make silly mistakes.

Is he in poor form, or down tooling? That's the question should be.

Why would he down tool though? It's not like someone came for him and the club stopped him from leaving.

It doesn't look like it's even up to us, even if we wanted to. He can sign with another club in January for nothing, and he hasn't signed the deal that's supposedly been on the table for over a year, so he probably will.

But no. We probably shouldn't. I commend his loyalty when he was at his absolute best and we were garbage, but his regression is beginning to look Casillas-like. Both his agility and confidence look to be gone.

On the flipside, I think he'd be dumb to turn his nose up at the contract we're offering. Based on his form over the last year, which elite club would even want him?

For the right price. I just think having to worry about a keeper replacement is something we could do without right now.

No. Just sell him and get a younger keeper who is motivated to play for us.

He hasn’t downed tools, he’s trying to get a massive contract. Either from us, or whichever club he might sign with next. So you’d think he’d be playing out of his skin really. I’ve seen form drop after a player signs a new deal, hardly ever when they’re angling for one. I’ve no idea what’s happened to him, it defies logic. It’s been happening for too long now to just be poor form.

Get Onana in January and let this has-been go. Horrendous decline, the World Cup embarrassment ruined him.

Should not renew and he should be dropped. Fergie would not hesitate to do so and this is a test for ole. To allow him sign this contract now would be a mistake of sanchez proportions.

Problem is he can sign a pre contract in January so it’s too late to sell.

If he leaves he goes on a free.

I have been saying all along that form is temporary but he genuinely looks finished. Probably having to carry us for 4/5 years has finally caught up with him and now he's even shit.

No way would I give him 350k a week on current form. He'd taking the piss if he thinks he deserves that after today.

Said it already last season that we should get rid of him in the summer. So now, our club is being run by complete morons, we'll either sign him on some crazy wages or lose him for free.

A broken fax machine was the one that stop his transfer to Madrid...he hasnt really been linked to any club besides Madrid and when they came calling for him he answered. So I dont think "loyal" is specially a good adjetive.

Sell him this summer and bring back Henderson. We won't finish top 4 anyway.

He doesn't want to sign so far and we shouldn't have gone into a season with an uncommitted keeper. There's no carrying a keeper.

He's obviously capable of playing well but I think we'll see the errors continue as he thinks about not signing for this club who've gone nowhere with nearly a billion spent.

I don't blame him, it's natural, especially after witnessing first hand today's performance at home to CP. It's poor management for this situation. We'll see if this gamble of playing De Gea in his last year works out or if he signs and picks up his performances once he's fully focused and committed again. I wouldn't play him unless he signs a new deal as it's just a too crucial a position to have doubt even if he says he'll give it his all and leave.

Why would he? Also he has made some nasty mistakes for Spain as well...so down tool for them too?
He's always been shite with Spain since ages ago. There's nothing new there. With us, though, he's been dilly dallying with his contract until this last year of his contract. It's forcing United to either pay up his demand, or let go of him for cheap or even free.

He can do the same without playing shite, I don't think he is doing this on purpose. His image is taking huge hits by his mistakes that will only affect him when he is negotiating a new contract with either us or a new club.

No, I think we should have sold him in the summer.

He's not worth the kind of money he reportedly* wants and I don't think anyone else pays it him unless they're bonkers, even if he was a free agent. That means we can't renew with an eye to possibly sell and get a transfer fee either which is sometimes a thing when contracts are winding down. If no other club would match those wage demands on a free then they're certainly not going to pay a fee and do it.

*reports can be wrong.

The fax machine thing was a myth that became a running joke. There was no fax machine involved. One side pulled the plug at the last minute, and both sides seemed to bicker over who it was. Regardless, he hasn't ever significantly kicked up a stink and pushed hard for a move, especially during a period when he was the best around and we were shite. As far as loyalty goes in football, it's reasonable.

Not with the rumoured wages. Plus as things stand, the big clubs aren't going to be as desperate to get him as they used to be.

His performance in the World Cup really did a number on him and his reputation in the rest of the world.

No, he looks to be in decline and had cost easy goals numerous times over the last year.
It doesn’t matter how good he was in the past, we cannot keep giving him a leeway while losing football matches.

Absolutely not. Even if Henderson did all these blunders at least he dreams about being here. De Gea does not. If not for a faulty fax machine he would have been gone years ago. Now he's holding the club to ransom for more money and we'll end up losing him for not a penny.

Let’s not make excuses for him. Poor form started before the wc in the game vs Croatia. United are lucky he didn’t sign last year or this summer otherwise we’d be stuck with another Sanchez for 4 yrs.

Agree with this. He doesn’t want to be here, and has wanted to be elsewhere for a few years now. He probably really regrets signing that extension after the Real farce.

I’d take the big money offer off the table and let him go. With no hard feelings, as he’s been an outstanding player for the majority of his time here.

He's been dumped by Spain as well. Had a very good save today, but he's been below par since the start of last season. If he'd performed like his best years, sure, give him a new contract. But now I think we should consider looking in another direction. We have other very capable keepers at the club.

Also, I wouldn't be unhappy if someone else took over the captains armband.

He still made saves no others would last season. Nearly as many as the mistakes he made I'd say.
