Having him back from injury is a positive of some sorts. Did some good things today but realistically he's on borrowed time. He's got until the end of the season to save himself.
His crossing and set pieces used to be a strength of his. But these days the accuracy and threat is severely lacking. As we're determined to play this way he's got to produce or deliver in the other aspects of his game. It's just not good enough i'm afraid.

Explains a lot about our problems. We're a team that focuses a lot on wing play and we have Young and Valencia out wide.
Isn't it funny that a "defensive winger" can't defend properly? What exactly was he doing for the first goal?
I have great respect for the person (his recent efforts to help a terminal fan mean he should be exempted from the C-word,) but the footballer is clearly not good enough. How he played today, effectively in place of Kagawa, I'll never understand.

He was in a perfect position with one fk to curl it round/over their defensive line. Instead he just smashed straight at towards the crowd of players which is obviously much easier for them to deal with than for us to make anything of.
His corners seem to go way too high which again makes it easier for the defence to deal with than for us to use.

I only noticed him 2 times yesterday. The shot in the box early in the game, when he was booked and when he was subbed off. A winger is supposed to be the most visible player on the pitch with the dribbling, crosses, shots etc but he manages to go missing every game. I hope he follows Anderson out of the club in the summer. He's rubbish. One of Fergie's worst signings imo.
If he plays it should always be on the right side though preferably both he and Valencia should just feck off
Yes, Jones is a great talent and I love him, just throwing out there wasn't helping him at all. Young is a poor player but also he wasn't helped by Moyes when he gave him that start.
For the life of me I cannot figure out why young wasnt dropped to the bench for this match. Then have Januzaj on the left with Kagawa in the middle considering it worked quite well in the last match.

Strange how a manager as great as Fergie got this one so badly wrong. Made some very strange choices in his last couple of years with us.
My only guess is that Kagawa and Januzaj together just weren't deem physical enough to play both.
Young seems to have played a part in just about all our big clashes this season, either starting, or coming off the bench. He seems to be Moyes' go-to guy, at the expense of more technically gifted players. Is it because there's a chance Young might snatch a penalty, or does Moyes really prefer him to Kagawa or Nani

I don't know if Fletcher would have done so well, with his smaller, slighter frame.

Villa did well with transfer fees for him and Downing. We paid a lot of money for him when he was in the last year of his contract.
But Ashley Young does nothing. Literally nothing. That means he's no more physically strong for the purposes of a game of football than Kagawa or Januzaj because it doesn't come into play. His physicality or lack of it is entirely irrelevant because he does nothing on the pitch.
Maybe so but I still dont think Ashley offers that much in protecting his fullback. I personally would have preffered to so Adnan on the wing, hes alot more creative from there than he is in the centre at present. Thats not to say he wont be good in the middle long term but at the moment we could have done with Kagawa there as he has alot more experience in playing that position in big games.

Agreed. And I should clarify, the guy I'm wanting to root for is Moyes. He's just making it difficult. I feel like Jones has shown enough as a CM to do a job there, but not in these circumstances, and not with Fletcher producing a string of competent displays. Same with Young, to a lesser degree. If he was bang-in-form it could be justified.
Anyway, two bizarre decisions, and unfortunately the gambles, if that's what they were, didn't pay off.
He was. He hasn't had much luck and as soon as his confidence was built up, injury knocks him back to square one again. To me, it seems like Young isn't using the full range of his talents and is keeping things simple, perhaps to avoid another injury. He doesn't have the physique of a Valencia or the tricks and balance of Januzaj but he is a skillful orthodox winger that is woefully lacking in self-belief. He's not a bad player.
I don't blame Young, I kind of like him. He's a limited player who I think gives it his best. He is a squad player and there should never be a day when he is starting at Stamford Bridge. Playing him (I assume) because of his defensive abilities will not get the best out of him.
When i saw the lineup i thought we were set up for a containment job. It was nice to see us start well but defensively we were all about containing them. when the first goal went in, we lost our bearings..i felt ashley fell into moyes line of reasoning of this "containment job" idea. Anyone else feel that way when they saw the lineup?
he's not a bad player but even when given a run of games he doesnt really impress all that much. i did feel for him though yesterday. Being thrown into a game when you're not fully match fit is a pretty big gamble. Looks great when it pays off but when it doesnt
