How can your tactic be to defend a one goal lead for 88 minutes. Ridiculous.

Nothing I’ve seen in this tournament has made me change my opinion that he is wasting one of the best squads in world football, and they get where they are despite him, not because of him.

Special mention to sending an 18 year old out to take the final penalty because oh my god.
The way he acted with Greenwood was feking disgraceful too. Strange way to deal with young players.

We deserve a bit more intent attacking wise with talent that great, Southgate probably isn't going to ever deliver that though.
I hate this idea being thrown around. If we had more attacking players we are still not getting much possession, we are still only playing counter attacking football, the difference is we are a lot more likely to concede and a bit more likely to score.

The best idea I have seen is that we should have started with Grealish, but otherwise not much else makes much difference.

We’re going to have to endure the same shit on a stick defensive football with a £bn attacking bench next summer aren’t we?
Only way we get rid of the coward is if we get embarrassed at the world cup. Problem is, our squad is so good that while we'll no doubt go out at some point, it won't be in a fashion that costs him his job.

He's going to hinder this generation for years to come.

he definitely got what he deserves tonight! That passive approach was embarrassing for such a great squad. Loser.

I honestly do not understand what you expect or envision. Lots of calls for attacking football when its not realistic.

Manchester Utd never lose, just run out of time
Yea I would have picked him as well, but it wouldn't have changed our approach much.
Grealish by himself may not have changed the entire approach, but it would have reduced the amount of pressure England were under and given them a better chance of actually creating opportunities. Which would have stopped them dropping as deep as they ended up doing.

If you want to play creative attacking football, you play Grealish as he's your most creative. If you want to play defensive football and soak up the pressure, you play Grealish as he's your best outlet. The only way he shouldn't be a certainty in the side is if you want to play pure counter-attacking football, but you don't then play Mason Mount. Southgate obviously tried to go the second route but screwed up his team selections, as even if you don't go with Grealish there was still the likes of Sancho, Rashford and perhaps Saka who would all have been better choices for that position than Mount.

Reaching the final is an achievement, and he'll obviously be managing England in the next WC, but he's too cautious to really get the best out of this generation. What a waste.
England, in both the World Cup and the Euros, had an absolutely piss easy route to the finals. The only real obstacle in this years tournament, prior to the finals, were a Germany team in decline.A different group to begin with and a different route to the final and England could've been dumped out a lot sooner. Not to mention that they've had the benefit of spending the vast majority of the tournament training in England, in close distance to the stadium, while other teams have been constantly on the move.

Southgate just isn't good enough. The use of Mount, the use of Foden, suddenly deciding that Saka should be a key player. The substitutions in the Denmark match, where they were saved by a dive from Sterling. The substitutions against Italy...Henderson had been out for ages with an injury, nowhere near being up to speed, no reason whatsoever to throw him in. Subbing Rashford and Sancho on with seconds remaining, so their first kick on the ball will be during the penalty shootout, what an absolute bonkers decision. As a bare minimum, give them some time on the pitch to settle their nerves a bit.

England have the players to play exciting football. It is so frustrating.

You could stomach losing if you could say England gave their all, but they didn't. Southgate didn't try anything, really.

praised when he ‘gets it right’ and should be criticised by his decisions on the final.

I genuinely can’t believe he let the game get away from us like that.

How is it an achievement? with a squad who should win it without breaking sweat with such extremely easy draw? Jeeesuz wept. The guy deserves to go to jail for waisting such potential and eating his shit from shitting his pants every game since he got to manage the team. By far the best squad in Euros and easiest way to finals and still plays like Catenaccio was still a thing. What a morron and everyone else thinking it's some kind of achievement he got to the final now and semifinal in the world cup deserve the same, he should have been winning it ffs, not even mentioning being at home most of the time with all the fans support. And I am angry only for our lads who deserved to lift some trophy after being leaded by another average (still miles better manager) Ole, and for my good mates in England and other well behaved fans here. But the rest of you who booed at every occassion of other national teams anthem, applauded Sterling cheating or see yourselves in the final like every fecking shite media in England after group stage, you absolutely deserve to cry and never win anything. Sorry had to be said and football justice has won today. Italy with average ageing squad still showed some fecking balls and justice was served.

Totally bottled that final.

Still think he's the right man for the job though and hope he learns from it.
He hasn't learned anything from the Croatia Semi Final in 2018 though. He's learnt absolutely nothing. Same exact playbook. Early goal, then stay on the back foot, let them have the ball and hope + pray they don't kill the game off before penalties.

If we stick with him, we will get exactly what we deserve.

Fair point. That game was Croatia all over again.

that’s a good point actually, reads almost identically doesn’t it? he did the same thing then too.

he clearly has no idea how to game manage.

to let an equal team have 70% possession in a final is just criminal - there’s no way italy were better than us, we just let them play their way into it.

He is such a negative manager, there has to be another manager out there that can get more out of this talented England team.

See, this is the problem. This England team is so damn lucky with their draws. If England were in the opposite side of the bracket alongside Italy, Spain, Belgium would it have reached the final ?

Same old negative bollocks.

We took the initiative then ceded every last drop.

Italy made subs, tweaked things and tried different avenues. Then won on pens when we made mistakes.

But at least Italy tried. We seemed happy with 1-0, an even with 1-1. Just horrendous negativity.

Well yes, in one sense it is an achievement.

The problem is, the England squad were among the best in the tournament. It is certainly better than the squad of the side they lost to today. And they had an easy run to the final. And they were playing most of their games at home.

So another way to frame it would be: this was by far the best chance of winning a trophy that England have had in decades, they had everything going for them they could possibly have hoped for, they were favourites for the final, they went a goal ahead after 2min and they still botched it. Which is mostly down to Southgate. And that takes the gloss off the achievement somewhat.

There is no lineup that England could produce that would mean we are not playing defensive, we are playing counter attacking whatever the lineup.

Just remember that England pretty much parked the bus after the first 10 minutes. They parked the bus for a whole 80 minutes.

With all these attacking talent on the bench. Southgate brought Grealish and Sancho with him just to keep them as bench options the whole tournament.

It's honestly inexcusable. If I were English I would want him sacked immediately.
correct. he should have already resigned for
me.

  • He parks the bus for 88 mins
  • He doesn't make subs when Italy have a foothold.
  • He then subs a sub
  • He gives penalty takers 2 mins of match time and creates absolutely needless pressure.
Give him a new contract folks.

The starting line up was right, but then lost the plot after 60 min and during the pens

Such a painful watch and he has done it before. Hell we did it in the first game against Croatia. We're not allowed to criticise him because media has decided 'he has got every decision right'. But he has a squad that most managers in the competition would dream of having. Can't get hold of the ball? What's the answer? Keep all the players on of course til they get more and more fecking tired and can't think straight. Expert masterclass in clinging on for dear life. I think he is a good manager who is clued up on tactics and lots of things, but he totally bottled that. 1-0 is the time to go in for the kill. Just surrendering the midfield for most of the match was so poor. It would possibly be acceptable but at 1-0 you are playing a risky game. You could see Italy building and building getting more touches, getting more confidence.

Far far far too negative today, he let the Italians play themselves back into the game in the 2nd half
