That Torres Miss

Anyone else thought that Torres should have scored in the second half rather than taking a touch?

Of course he should of scored, but this is a confidence shot Torres.

'That Torres Miss' once again was the big decider in the game.

Knew we'd score when he messed up that chance. That will no doubt put another dent in his confidence.

Very good assist for Mata's goal and then makes a mess of that chance. How many times has this happened to him now? Every time there is a moment when you think it might be the start of him getting back to his best, he reminds everyone that he is still rubbish.

He was still rubbish today. Showed glimpses of it with that assist, but as far as his striking ability was concerned he was absolutely useless.

Torres is the biggest mystery in the world of the football.

Or is this his useless twin or something?

Surely there has to be something up with the guy?

Family problems? Boyfriend issues?

He did get a caution though. Which means he now has more yellow cards for chelsea than he has goals.

I prefer to think of the latest Torres miss as a great tackle from Tony V... seriously... solid play from our make-shift right back staying with the Lady boy... after Ferdinand was roasted by Ivanovic's header and Torres looked like he was away... Evan's held him up and Tony won the ball!

Bet you don't miss him in this form

I miss the old Torres I suppose, the same way I miss the Fowler of old because we could really do with a top goalscorer up front. No hankering after the current Torres as he is now, nor any 'what could have been' or 'if only' really. It's pretty clear to me that player is well and truly gone. I am just chuffed we got money for him at prime value.

And spent it on Carroll

Seriously, I wonder what's the matter with him? Is it that he never got over the last injury? You just don't become a bad player overnight

One of the ITKs over at RAWK reckoned Liverpool were amazed that Torres passed the CFC medical as, in their view, his legs (or knees...can't recall which) had 'gone'.

I am starting to get mildly hopeful he might grow into a player yet. He's looked good the past few games. Not great, but good enough to make a worthwhile contribution in attack.

I think it's a number of factors:

1. Loss of pace. Nothing electric about his acceleration these days and he used to have that.
2. Loss of confidence. He was never a particularly consistent finisher at Atletico but he became that at Liverpool. Think that confidence is gone for good. At best, he'll go back to being an ok but erratic goalscorer.
3. No Gerrard and Benitez - Rafa knew exactly how to use him, Torres has admitted as much, and Gerrard had a great understanding for how to pick up his runs and play him in. They were an awesome partnership while it lasted.

In hindsight, I think there was a case of a perfect storm of conditions that helped elevate Torres to one of the best in the world at Liverpool that just aren't there anymore. The fact that he didn't really reach the same heights for Spain during his time as a Liverpool player either, wasn't as good before I think supports that. Now those conditions are gone, he's lost some more beyond that in both pace and confidence.

Think he will improve when he leaves Chelsea, a slower slightly broken version of the player he was at Atletico, but I doubt he'll ever be more than decent player with the odd world class game once in a blue moon to make people hopeful again.

Newcastle were driving the price. If we decided £35 million was too much for Carroll then Chelsea would never have given us £50 million for Torres, ad infinitum. Anyway that's old covered ground.

Carroll on current form and future potential is at least a £15million player which somebody would pay today if we sold him. So we've lost £20 million from that deal (i.e. 35m-15m). Which still puts us £30 million up from the Torres money.

Disclaimer: I think Andy's worth more but keeping it simple for the audience in here.

Regardless, you still paid hilariously over the odds for him. The fee for Torres is irrelevant.

How is Carroll on current form worth £15m? He has been absolutely woeful for you this season. A couple of years ago the club valued him at £1m, and he looked better then. In my opinion, you'd struggle to get anywhere near £10m for him right now. A price near that is based off of name, because to be quite frank, an unheard of player who played like Carroll would struggle to get any decent fee paid for him.

Which you then spent in the summer on the likes of Downing, Adam and Henderson and letting Aquilani and Meireles go. You never seem to be more than two or three purchases away from a really great side but then you go and mess it up.

which is utter bullshit because his movement is fine. He might not have that explosive pace, but he gets himself in positions to score.

If it were true, congrats to LFC for destroying yet another young footballers career by continually playing him injured and rushing him back. Owen sends his regards also.

 I used to think you were one of the worst posters on here. I see now why it's worth keeping you.

I hope you're not an accountant by the way.

Torres went against the medical advice of the Liverpool staff when he rushed himself back from injury to make the world cup.

He still scored 22 goals in 32 games in the season leading up to the world cup so he had mojo before that.

Torres has no one to blame for his misery than himself.

I think only Torres thought that whatever he tried was a good idea.

Sorry but that's bullshit. Torres doesn't pick himself. It's the job of the manager and medical team to decide if the player is ready.

Well the medical staff didn't advise him to play, nor did they with Fabregas. Both WANTED and choose to play at the World Cup themselves, just like Rooney did both times when he really shouldn't have gone and was clear none were fit in the warm ups, and in Rooneys case, the games he played for Utd at the end of that season.

At the end of the day, if you can run without severe pain through painkillers, then 90% of players will go against medical advice to play in a world cup, especially when in Torres' case, you are hot favourites to win it.

Unlike the other two, Torres followed that season playing nearly every week(37 prem games) and mostly this season, Rooney got his American break thing after the contract and Fabregas got a break through injury/extended rest. Torres just kept playing, and hasn't really stopped since and with Villa probably out, is likely to start at the Euros despite form anyway.

Must say i had no doubt he'd flourish at Chelsea with the likes of Lampard and then Mata supplying him. Its quite astonishing how shit he's been. the chance yesterday for example. the torres of old would have taken one otuch to control it and the 2nd would have smashed it past de gea.

Was such a player. a shame from a neutral's point of view how he's declined so fast. am enjoying it though ;)

Noone would pay 15 million for Carroll. You'd be lucky with 8.
